Preface MASTERFORMAT 07 21 13.19 REVISED DATE 2011-06-22 Mineral-Fibre Thermal Insulation for Buildings Scope These Evaluation Listings apply to mineral-fibre thermal insulation in the form of faced and unfaced batts, rolls, and boards. The proponent has demonstrated that the product meets the following standard: CAN/ULC-S702-09, Standard for Mineral Fibre Thermal Insulation for Buildings. The standard describes five types of mineral-fibre insulation. These CCMC Evaluation Listings refer only to preformed insulation, Types 1, 2 and 3. They are defined as follows: Type 1, unfaced; Type 2, faced with a permeable membrane; and Type 3, faced with a vapour barrier. Standard Table 1. Requirements for Preformed Thermal Insulation Test/Property Length Width Thickness Thermal resistance Thermal resistivity Requirements 1%, +3% for batts and rolls. 3 mm, +10 mm for boards and sheets. 0%, +3% for batts and rolls. ± 3 mm for boards. Mean thickness the design thickness and none of the individual specimen thicknesses < 90% of the design thickness. 1 mm, +3 mm for boards. Mean thermal resistance the design thermal resistance (as stated on the product). 18.5 (m K)/W - 1 -
Table 1. Requirements for Preformed Thermal Insulation (cont d) Test/Property Surface burning characteristics Smoulder resistance Breaking load of exterior frame wall sheathing Compressive resistance of draining insulation Water vapour permeance Corrosiveness Fungi resistance Requirements For Type 1 products not intended for exterior of basement walls: Flame-spread classification shall not exceed 25. Smoke developed shall not exceed 50. For Type 2 and 3 the test values shall be reported without reference to the acceptance criteria. Applicable only to Type 1 products, not intended for exterior of Basement walls. Mean mass loss 2% and each specimen 3%. Smoulder zone shall not reach specimen periphery. Not applicable to batts or rolls. 2.7 kg. Applicable only to Type 2 boards for exterior frame wall sheathing. Not applicable to batts or rolls. Applicable to draining insulation only. Compressive resistance for a 38 mm or thicker draining insulation shall be at least 7 kpa at 10% deformation and for thinner than 38 mm it shall be at least 10 kpa at 25% deformation. Batts and Rolls: Not applicable for Type 1 products; 300 ng/(pa s m 2 ) for Type 2 products; 60 ng/(pa s m 2 ) for Type 3 products; and Boards: Applicable to adhered membrane/insulation or to non-adhered membranes. Applicable to Type 1 batts and rolls. Boards: corrosion control. Applicable to Type 1 batts and rolls. Boards: growth comparative item. Marking The standard requires that packaging for the insulation be labelled or marked with the following information: brand name and the name of the manufacturer or supplier; identification of the manufacturing facility location; type of insulation and its intended use; net content of package in m 2 ; number of pieces per package; design linear dimensions of the pieces in the package in mm; design thickness in mm; thermal resistance in (m 2 K)/W to one decimal place; on batts and rolls, the numerical thermal resistance value (or a simple code) displayed on the material at every 1.2 m length; date of manufacture or shift code; statement that the product complies with the standard; and for preformed insulation without a membrane (Type 1 material), except for draining insulation, a cautionary statement: CAUTION: Building, electrical, fire and other applicable codes shall be complied with. All heatemitting devices, such as fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, pipes, ducts and vents to these appliances - 2 -
shall maintain a minimum clearance of 50 mm between these devices and the insulation. Recessed light fixtures, unless designed for the purpose, shall not be installed in insulated ceilings. NOTE: Where applicable, the product shall carry additional information as stated below: If the product is intended for application at thicknesses other than the design thickness, the thermal resistance and application for each intended secondary application shall be shown in similar print at a character height of at least ½ that of the design characters (with a minimum of 15 mm). The associated thickness of the secondary application shall also be shown. This secondary application, thermal resistance and thickness information shall be located on the same sides, excluding the ends, of the package as the design thermal resistance, application and thickness designations; and Any necessary user safety information, unless a separate information sheet is provided. NOTE: Depending upon the jurisdiction, additional marking may be required by applicable acts and regulations.
