. Technical Information SILACOLL 150 Mineral Based Adhesive for Industrial Bonding SILACOLL 150 is a ready-to-use, incombustible adhesive based on soluble silicates. SILACOLL 150 is designed for automated gluing of fireproof materials. SILACOLL 150 is temperature resistant up to > 1000 C. It is water based and therefore fre e of organic solvents. SILACOLL 150 is pasty and can be applied either manually or by using pumps and dosage instruments. Depending on the substrates which have to be glued, SILACOLL 150 builds up a sufficient wet adhesion, in many cases making a static support during the drying out phase redundant. In order to cure properly, it is necessary for the water bound in SILACOLL 150 to be able to evaporate easily. If this is not possible due to constructional reasons (closed systems for example), we recommend mixing SILACOLL 150 with a hardener such as SILACOLL 800. This hardener ensures that SILACOLL 150 can cure properly. When fully cured, it is possible to achieve shear strength above 4 N/mm 2 with correct processing using appropriate substrates. After curing SILACOLL 150 is no longer ductile. SILACOLL 150: is absolutely incombustible is temperature resistant up to > 1000 C is VOC free is resistant to many chemicals is environmentally friendly is open to vapour diffusion Seite 1
Typical Applications SILACOLL 150 is very suitable for bonding mineral based materials, metal, wood and glass. A typical application is the mechanical gluing of various insulation boards. In systems where the water, bound in SILACOLL 150 is not able to evaporate (i.e. manufacturing of fireproof doors), it is recommended to add SILACOLL 800 as hardener, using a dosage system. Fire Classification The construction product SILACOLL 150 meets the criteria for the classification for Category A No contribution to fire. This classification is based on the COMMISSION DECISION of 6 June 2003 (2003/24/EC) amending Decision 96/603/EC establishing the list of products belonging to Class A No contribution to fire according to Decision 94/611/EC implementing Article 20 of Council Directive 89/ 106/EEC on construction products. Typical Physical Properties Appearance: beige Odour: characteristic Solid content: approx. 54% Flammability: incombustible ISO 1182 Rheology: thixotropic behaviour Viscosity: 5 500 7 000 mpa*s Haake Rheometer, 20 C, 25 min, τ = 30.24 Pa Density: 1.61 g/cm 3 bei 20 C Directions for Use Usually a single application of SILACOLL 150 will be sufficient. After application of the adhesive, both substrates should be joined and good pressure should be applied for a few seconds over the whole surface. Depending on the absorbency of the substrate the glue develops a necessary wet adhesion within a few seconds. The curing process for non-absorbing materials, such as metal, glass, etc. usually takes a little longer. On non-absorbing surfaces it is important for the substrate to be open for vapour diffusion (e.g. mineral wool). In systems where the water bound in SILACOLL 150 is not able to evaporate the curing process will not take place. In this case it is necessary to mix SILACOLL with a hardener such as SILACOLL 800 prior application. The ideal processing temperature is around 20 C and should al ways be between +5 C and 30 C. Also the relative air humidity should be between 20% and 80%. Low ambient humidity shortens the open time, high ambient humidity prolongs the curing time. SILACOLL 150 can be applied manually or with appropriate machinery. For manual application a notched trowel / blade is the most suitable. Seite 2
Surface Preparation The substrate must be free of dust, oil or grease, stable and dry. It is recommended to clean it with a soft broom or brush. It is not recommended to use SILACOLL 150 on surfaces with organic coatings. Consumption / Notched Trowel Depending on the way SILACOLL 150 is applied, and on the type of surfaces used (soaking / nonsoaking), the consumption is normally between 0.5 and 1.5 kg/m 2. For critical applications we recommend some preliminary tests prior to application. In case of special applications please contact the technical support of vanbaerle. Curing Time The following table contains empirical values. Data was obtained by gluing aluminium /aluminium. Time 23 C Remark Open time [Min] 5-8 Maximum time between application and fixing (time until skin formation) Early strength [Day] 5-10 Time recommended between gluing and further processing (approx. 50% of the final bonding strength achieved) Curing time [Day] 21-28 Final bonding strength is reached It is recommended to process SILACOLL 150 at temperatures between 5 C and 30 C with 20-80% relative humidity. Cleaning Tools can be cleaned easily with water as long as the adhesive is not completely dry. Hot water dissolves SILACOLL 150 easier than cold water. The use of plastic equipment is highly recommended, since adhesion is stronger on metal than plastic. SILACOLL 150 etches glass irreversibly. Immediately rinse with plenty of water. Do not rub, as the fillers contained in SILACOLL 150 will scratch the glass. Typical Applications In order to assure perfect bonding and setting one of the substrates must be absorbent and vapour permeable. The following materials can be successfully glued with SILACOLL 150: Seite 3
Mineral based material Metal 1 Open pored foam of various polymers rock wool 2 and glass wool 3 glass ceramics, clay minerals fireclay bricks anodises aluminium sheet of metal and steel DOW Styrofoam IB-X Swisspor insulation board 6000 EPS 035 PW Swisspor EPS 80 mm Swisspor XPS Jackodur KF300 Gefiniert GL Wood wood fibre type panels Pavatex planed wood, not treated wood cork 1 All metallic surfaces must be free of any coatings such as varnish, powder coating, wax, oil or paint. 2 Rockfon Facette panels shall only be glued on absorbent surfaces 3 Except Isover Thermo-Plus and Iso-Swiss (brown) 4 As long as there is only a low content of organic glue on the surface. We recommend to always perform a preliminary adhesion test. For gluing where none of the materials is absorbent or vapour permeable it is recommended to add the hardener SILACOLL 800 to SILACOLL 150 prior to application. Storage SILACOLL 150 is sensitive to frost. With appropriate storage in the original and unopened containers at temperatures between +5 C and +30 C, SILACOLL 150 will remain stable for 2 years. Frozen adhesive can be made serviceable by intense mixing after defrosting. The surface liquid that can appear during storage must be homogenized by stirring before application. vanbaerle Your partner for high quality silicates. In 1888, vanbaerle started out as a soap factory. Ten years after its foundation, the company moved to its present location in Münchenstein and developed into a dynamic and innovative enterprise. With its business units Hygiene and Silicates, it is represented in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia and North America. The company has 134 employees in its headquarters and its affiliated companies. The production plants of the business units Hygiene and Silicates, the laboratories for development, application technology and quality management, as well as the warehouses and the administration buildings are all located at the Münchenstein site. We have been transforming basic minerals into valuable products for more than 100 years. During this time, we have optimized established products and introduced many innovations. Today, silicates are important additives for a whole range of industries and can be found in many products. Silicates are used in welding rods, waste paper recycling, and detergents. They can bind pigments and cement, glue materials and protect and isolate buildings. And the good news is that the list of applications keeps constantly growing.
