Overview ZGT in figures and key issues Healthcare 2011 Challenge Barcode Lessons learned in ZGT Conclusion

ZGT: one hospital in two locations: Almelo and Hengelo

Service Area ZGT Population: 320.000

ZGT in figures (2010) Hospital locations 2 Outpatient clinics (+mobile X-ray) 5 Number of employees 3500 Doctors 211 Patients treated annually 250.000 Beds 1085 Turnover 250 million

Key Issues ZGT A safety management system that allows insight in hazardous processes and reduces unsafe situations Focus on management systems to provide apprehension of processes and guarantee the critical steps by protocols, all based on the patient perspective Focus on safety of medical equipment, including certification by TNO/TUV Auditing system to review and check our processes on a regular base. The results lead to quality improvements, eventually leading to ZGT as one of the most safe hospitals

Healthcare 2011 Focus on patient safety : Safety Management System Electronic Health Record Electronic Prescription System Recall registration Increasing partnership patients Transparency: Prove of quality of care and patient safety will gain importance The value of ICT in healthcare will increase significantly

Challenge Part of the solution is the use of a unique barcode in the Healthcare Supply Chain The use of a unique barcode leads to: medication errors*: decrease of 38% administrative costs: decrease of at least 7% ICT-systems need to communicate and match * source: Poon EG et al. Effect of Bar-Code Technology on the Safety of Medication Administration. N Eng J Med 2010;362:1698-707

Barcode supports -1- Identification: Person Time Place Pharmaceutical or Medical Device Reduce costs Registration of each step in the process Reduction of errors and adverse events

Barcode supports -2- Track and trace: Focus in recalls Reduce costs Enhance safety Stock control Security of the supply chain Reduce costs Increase scheduled planning

ZGT ZGT started a project for traceability of medical devices at the operating theatre We intend to learn what processes are involved and what systems have to be adjusted

ZGT: Lessons learned Thus far we learned : to cooperate in the supply chain with: Software suppliers Medical Device suppliers To cooperate in our own hospital with: All types of professionals Logistics Software Management Etc.

Goal Due to the urgency of patient safety and the quality of care, we can t afford delay Barcodes are state of the art in the entire supply chain. However there is not yet an uniform standard between the supply chain partners and the hospitals The Dutch Hospital Associations NFU and NVZ decided to implement GS1 Data Carriers on primary and secondary packages By the end of 2012 all primary and secondary packages should contain a GS1 barcode with a GTIN, batch or serial number and expiry date

Conclusion Most suppliers seem willing to use the GS1 barcodes Hospitals are not yet ready to implement To improve patient safety and quality of care, all partners within the supply chain and hospitals need to cooperate to implement a unique GS1 Barcode Proof is needed to show hospitals how a unique barcode can improve patient safety and quality of care

Thank you
