Packaging Hierarchy and Identification SSCC Primary (GTIN) Secondary (ITF-14, SSCC) Tertiary (GTIN, SSCC code) ) 13

Understanding Fixed / Homogeneous Containers When all units within the shipping containers are identical with same size, description, count, weight and /or GTIN code. Oriental Canaille Ambre Heterogenous Grouping of : 12 Oriental, 6 Canaille 6 Ambré GTIN-14 for heterogenous groupings of 24 Products: Different item ID 14

Understanding Variable / Heterogeneous Containers When all units within shipping container vary in some respect - different GTIN code, Color, Size, Weight, Quantity etc. Consumer (individual) item Carton of 6 consumer items Carton of 10 consumer items GTIN GTIN GTIN-14 Indicator digits 1 through 8 can be used to identify different levels of packaging's including carton or pallets. 15

Symbologies For Barcoding on Cartons ITF - 14 GS1-128 ITF-14 is adapted to printing on poor quality packaging material (e.g. corrugated cardboard) Designed to be read bi-directionally Limitation: Cannot encode information other than GTIN-14 (01) (15) (10) AF5893 GTIN-14 Date Batch No. GS1-128 uses application identifiers and can encode a wide range of information, like: Item identification Dates (Expiry/ Mfg. / Packaging / ) Batch No., Location No., etc. Trade quantities and measures Others Alphanumeric, Variable Length 16

Understanding GTIN-14 GTIN-14 is a 14 digit number assigned by the manufacturer to each standard packaging level unit above the SKU or Consumer unit. GTIN-14 Data Structure: GTIN Code Indicator Digit The indicator digit can be used to identify the standard packing configuration as illustrated below: Indicator Digit EAN Code Packing Size Numbers from 1 through h 8 can be used for the indicator digit. it Indicator 0 can be used in situations ti where carton is also the lowest unit of sale. 17

Understanding Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) Serial Shipping container code(sscc) is used to uniquely identify goods on the way from sender to final recipient i and can be used by all participants i t in the transporttand distribution ib ti chain. Each logistic unit at the time of its creation is uniquely identified by the Manufacturer or Supplier SSCC Data Structure: 18

Barcode Symbology used to encode SSCC SSCC can be encoded using GS1-128 Symbology as illustrated below: 19

Application Areas:- GTIN -14 The application of GTIN-14 when encoded on ITF-14 is limited to the trade items that are not scanned at the POS. Usage Benefits Used on standard trade items to identify the cartons, inner packs Intended for directly printing on corrugated cartons Enables fast and accurate inventory tracking and updation of non consumer trade items Easy identification of the contents of the cartons Less errors due to automated updating of inventory 20

Application Areas:- Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) Uniquely identifies the shipping unit Can be used as a reference number or license plate Can be used to extract relevant information held in ERP systems / computer files 21

22 SSCC and Electronic Business Messaging

GS1 Standards: Regulatory Mandates in India Canteen Store Department (CSD) CSD mandates suppliers to Incorporate GS1 barcodes on all products supplied to them.4,000 consumer items, 33 area depots, 3,500 Unit run canteens Alcoholic beverages Delhi State Excise Department mandates use of GS1 standards d for enhancing supply chain hi efficiency and product authentication Fresh Foods, Processed Foods Healthcare Agriculture & Processed Food Export Development Authority ( APEDA) using GS1 Standards for implementing traceability Directorate General of Foreign Trade and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of (MoHFW) mandated the use of GS1 standards for pharmaceutical products to combat counterfeit products 23
