HRPA s Updated Certification Framework Describes a profession that is complex and which requires a high degree of competence Identifies three levels of practice in HR: an administrator level, a professional level, and a senior practitioner level June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 3
Three designations Contributing role in a larger HR function or sole HR practitioner in a small HR function Role is mostly administrative in nature Professional level HR practitioners May be either specialist or generalist positions Responsibilities may include, but not limited to, managing projects, programs, and initiatives and delegating tasks to entry-level staff In professional matters, individuals at this level can act independently. What is the Alternate Route? Alternative way of meeting the coursework requirement for the CHRP and CHRL Intended for experienced HR professionals System that gives points for experience, formal training, coursework, and other relevant designations Fifty points are needed to be eligible to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE, CKE1 or CKE2) June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 5
Who can apply for the Alternate Route? You must be a member of HRPA to apply for the Alternate Route You must have recognized credentials and/or HR experience at a professional level Your experience and credentials do not have to be from Ontario June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 6
Requirements that can be met with the Alternate Route Successful Alternate Route applicants: are deemed to have met the coursework requirement are eligible to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE, CKE1 or CKE2) Successful Alternate Route applicants who had a minimum of 3 years of experience approved through the Alternate Route are deemed to have met the experience requirement for the CHRL as well June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 7
The Alternate Route: Two Streams Stream 1: Education and HR Designations - - No adjudication required (administrative process) Can be submitted at any time Stream 2: Education, HR Designations and/or Experience - - Must be reviewed by a panel of the Experience Assessment Committee (adjudication required for the experience component) Deadline for submission is the last business day of each month June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 8

Criteria for Alternate Route Experience Work in HR : What constitutes the practice of human resources management Work at a professional level : Four factors of professional level experience Professional level HR experience must be within the last 10 years with at least three months experience within the last two years June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 10
What does in HR mean? The scope of practice of HR includes the following: The development and implementation of human resources policies and procedures Consultation in the area of human resources management Providing advice to clients, managers, and employees in matters pertaining to management of human resources The representation of clients and organizations in proceedings related to human resources management June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 11
What does in HR mean? (continued) Program development and evaluation in the area of human resources management The supervision of other human resources professionals whether registered or non-registered Coaching of employees, managers, and other individuals in matters relating to work and employment The conduct of research in the area of human resources management Teaching in the area of human resources management June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 12
What does professional level experience mean? Independence of actions the amount of planning, self-direction, decisionmaking and autonomy involved in the work experience A depth of work requirements the extent to which work experience requires data-analysis and interpretation Level of interaction the degree to which the individual interacts with a broad spectrum of contacts, including decision-makers Responsibility for work outcome the accuracy and extent to which the individual is held accountable for his/her work and decisions. *All 4 dimensions must be present for the experience to be considered at a professional level* June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 13
What doesn t count In order for a position to be considered, at least 51% of the time in the position must be spent in HR activities The CHRL is meant for HR professionals Work experience in a line capacity will not be credited (being a manager dealing with people does not necessarily make you an HR professional) General management work may be considered if the human resources work comprises at least 51% and there is no HR department or HR manager in the workplace Work experience gained while serving as a labour union representative or union employee (such as a Grievance Officer) unless these activities fall within a position clearly identified as an HR position June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 14

The Application Form Registrant (applicant) information: Must be an active member with HRPA Name should be the same as in member profile Daytime contact information (e-mail and phone #) Points summary: In filling out the application, you need to determine what categories your experience/credentials fall under and then assign yourself the points accordingly Need to have at least 50 points to submit the application June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 16
The Application Form (continued) Supporting Documentation: If you submit experience as part of your application, it will not be considered unless you include: Chronological resume Position description (for each position submitted) Employer documents are preferred; if not available, you must develop your own for consideration Organization chart (for each position submitted) Include the size of the organization (number of staff) Circle or indicate your position June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 17
The Application Form (continued) Questionnaire: Five questions should be answered for ALL positions being submitted for consideration Reference: A person (CHRL designation holder preferred) who would be in a position to verify the accuracy and completeness of the information provided on this form and supporting documents This person is only contacted if the committee is unsure about content of your application June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 18
The Application Form (continued) Declaration: Attestation that all information included in the form and in any supporting documentation is accurate, complete and fairly represents experience It is a breach of HRPA s Rules of Professional Conduct to provide false or misleading information June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 19

Submission deadlines Monthly submission deadline (last business day of each month) Next submission deadline is May 29 th Experience Assessment Committee is committed to approximately an eight-week turnaround from the submission deadline Results sent via e-mail June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 21
Re-submission When an application is not successful, it is kept on file. It is possible to update the application (re-submission) for a fee of $100 + HST June-18-15 The Alternate Route Process 22
