Prof. Dr. Dr. Karl Siegfried Boos 18 th September 1948 6 th October 2014
Curriculum vitae Karl Siegfried Boos was born on the 18 th September 1948 in Rastatt/Baden, Germany. He studied biochemistry at the Technical University of Hannover and graduated with a diploma in 1974. Between 1975 and 1977, he worked on his doctoral thesis at the Department of Biochemistry, University Medical School Hannover. After his thesis he spent one and a half year at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Washington State University/Pullman, USA. Then he became an assistant in the research group of Biological Chemistry at the University of Paderborn, Germany.
Curriculum vitae From 1985 till 1990 he was the head of the Laboratory for Biological Chemistry at the University of Paderborn and in 1987 he was appointed as a Professor of Biological Chemistry. Since 1990, he was the head of the Laboratory of Bioseparation at the Institute of Clinical Chemistry Medical Centre of the University of Munich. In 1994, he received the degree Dr. rer. biol. hum. habil. from the Medical Faculty and was appointed as a Professor of Experimental Clinical Chemistry.
Research topics From 1974 till 1984 his research interests was on the synthesis and investigation of modified nucleotides as molecular probes in energy transducing biosystems (membrane transport and oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria; photophosphorylation in chloroplasts). Since 1985 his research activities was directed to the synthesis and application of chemically and enzymatically modified stationary phases as well as to the development of fully automated, multidimensional separation methods (e.g. LC MS MS) for bioanalysis. Since 1990, he has also had a major interest in the design, synthesis and application of biocompatible adsorbents for the selective gastrointestinal and extracorporeal elimination of harmful compounds in humans by peroral dosage and on line adsorption apheresis. Since 2000 his interest was about the development of automated SPE SPE LC MS/MS systems for the direct analysis of Urine, Plasma and Serum and he was successfully involved in the development and clinical investigation of selective procedures of plasma perfusion therapy for treatment of septic shock and liver support.
Scientific work Professor Boos has published more than 100 papers in international journals and holds many national and international patents in the field of analytical chemistry, clinical chemstry and human medicine. He was well known as a lecturer in seminars, workshops and tutorials at international conferences. In 1995, he received the Hewlett Packard Award for advances in automated sample preparation. Professor Boos was a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Journal of Chromatography B and Journal of High Resolution Chromatography. Since 2000, he was a co editor of Chromatographia. In 2005, he became the German Head of the Sino German Cooperation ResearchGroup on Separation Sciences, a group founded by the late Professor Ernst Bayer and Professor Lu Pei Chang. 2010 appointment as Visiting Professor at Tongji Medical College, Wuhan, China.
