VOLUME-18 April-June, 2017 Issue-2 DISTRICT LEVEL SEMINAR ON CASHEWNUT ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti organised District Level Seminar on Cashewnut on 08-05-2017 at its premises. The event was jointly held with Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa, Development, Cochin. Delivering a key note address Dr. Venkatesh Hubballi, Director, Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development Board, Cochin said that 5.15 lakh farmers in India are cultivating cashewnut in an area of 10 lakh hectares producing 8 lakh tons of raw cashewnuts. There are 4000 cashewnut processing units in the country having annual processing capacity of 16 lakh tons. In order to meet the processing demand, India is importing raw cashewnut worth of Rs.8000 crores from other countries. There is lot of scope for cashewnut cultivation in India as there is huge demand for the cashewnut, he said. Further he said that Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development is encouraging farmers to cultivate cashewnut by providing incentives. It is supporting with Rs.20,000 40,000 per hectare for three years with a maximum area limit of 4 hectare per farmer. He requested the farmers to take the benefit of the scheme Dr. S.I. Hanumashetti, Retired Dean and Expert on cashewnut crop, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot addressed the farmers on production technologies of cashewnut cultivation, processing and marketing. He said that red sandy loam soils of Gadag district are most suitable for cashewnut cultivation and requested the farmers to adopt appropriate production technologies in cashewnut. Dr. L.G. Hiregoudar, Programme Coordinator of KVK, Hulkoti said that KVK in collaboration with Directorate of Cashewnut and Cocoa Development, Cochin has developed an action plan for promotion of cashewnut

crop in an area of 500 hectares in Gadag district. Shri G.R. Odugoudar and Shri Ishwarappa Hanchinal, progressive farmers spoke on the need for alternative crops like cashewnut crop to bring income security to the farmers. More than 200 farmers of Gadag district participated in the event. WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY ICAR-K.H. Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti in collaboration with Reliance Foundation, Gadag organised World Environment Day on 05-06-2017at Beladadi village of Gadag Taluk. The event was organised with the theme of creating awareness as well as conservation of natural resources, cleanliness in home, school and village premises and plantation of trees in school and villages. On this eve, the children marchfast was organised in the village to make people aware of conservation of natural resources and cleanliness in the environment. Children were administered oath in maintenance of cleanliness in the school campus as well as in the environment. Trees were planted in the school premises. District Co-ordinator of Reliance Foundation, Shri Bhaskarbhat Joshi spoke on ecological balance and requested Farmers Interest Groups and SHG to participate in conservation of natural resources. Subject Matter Specialist of KVK Shri S.K.Mudlapur, delivered lecture on efficient utilisation of agricultural waste and vermicompost production. The various schemes of Forestry Department and Horticulture Department for promotion of trees were briefed by Shri S.H.Adapur, Subject Matter Specialist (Ag.Extension), KVK Hulkoti. Shri Narayana Bhandi, Subject Matter Specialist (Soil Science) briefed about the water and soil conservation practices. On this occasion, Shri Dharmanna Lamani, President, Grama Panchayat, Shri Shankaragouda, Headmaster and School staffs Smt. Sharada Angasimani, Shri V.R. Bhagavat, Shri B.B. Kallannavar were present. More than 120 farmers, farmwomen representatives of Mahila Samukhya and extension functionaries were participated. MILLET MELA Millet Mela was organised at ICAR-K.H. Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti on 27-05-2017 with the theme Healthy Foods for Healthy Life. The programme was inaugurated by Smt. Shakuntala Ravi Mulimani, Member, Zilla Panchayat, Gadag briefed about the adulteration of food and the use of harmful pesticides and its ill-effects on health. She called upon the participants to consume food which is good and pure to lead a healthy life. The chief guest Smt. Asha D. Odugoudar, progressive farmwomen of Hulkoti participated in the programme. The President of the function Smt. Saroja Mohan Dasaraddi addressed the gathering for consumption of healthy foods as most of the people are depending on fast foods and junk foods which cause health problems. The Home Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Dr. Sudha Rayanagoudar briefed about the healthy foods for healthy life, balanced diet, importance of millets in daily diet. On this Page 2

occasion, the exhibition of various millet grains like Little Millet, Barnyard millets, Koda millet, Proso millet, Foxtail millet, Pearl millet, Finger millet and the value added products of various millets were organised. In addition to this, the sale of millet seeds, millet grains and diabetic mix were also organised. The literature on Healthy Foods for Healthy Life and value added Sorghum products were distributed. SEMINAR ON NATURAL FARMING AND KHARIF SEED DAY PROGRAMME The Seminar on Organic Farming and Kharif season Seed Day was organized by ICAR- K.H. Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra on 28.05.2017. The seminar was inaugurated by Shri D.R.Patil, Former MLA, Gadag and he addressed to adopt organic and natural farming practices for production of chemical free foods. In addition, due to recurrent drought occurring for the last four years, the productivity of crops is reducing day by day. In order to have sustained productivity of crops, farmers have to adopt the organic cultivation practices. The Chief Guest Shri Prasannamurthy, Specialist, Natural Farming, Tumkur explained the benefits of organic farming. Further, detailed discussion with farmers was made about preparation of various organic inputs and farming practices to be followed in both organic and natural farming. The Subject Matter Specialist of KVK explained the farmers about cultivation of Kharif crops and the use of quality seeds for getting good returns. Further, the Seed Mela was organized to supply the quality seeds like Onion, Greengram, Coriander etc., The exhibition of various seeds, bio-fertilizers, light traps, organic inputs etc was organized. On this occasion Dr. Prakash Bhat, Rural Development Specialist, Shri J.K. Jamadar, renowned Journalist were also present. Dr. L.G.Hiregoudar, KVK Head welcomed the guest and Shri S.K. Mudlapur, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection) presented vote of thanks. More than 350 farmers participated in the function. AWARDS/RECOGNITIONS 1. Shri Vishwanath G. Hireogudar, Progressive farmer of Hulkoti village of Gadag Taluk had been awarded Upcoming Krishi Pandit Prashasti award for the year 2015-16 for the commendable work in the field of Agriculture and Horticulture. He was felicitated by Shri Siddaramaiah, Honourable Chief Minister, Karnataka State at Bangalore on 21-06-2017. 2. Shri Ashoka Halli, Progressive Farmer of Shagoti village of Gadag taluk was honoured with Upcoming Krishi Pandit Prashasti award for the year 2015-16. He has promoted dairy, horticulture, millets, organic farming, azolla, bio-gas plant etc and developed model integrated farming system. He was felicitated by Shri Siddaramaiah, Honourable Chief Minister, Karnataka State at Bangalore on 21-06-2017 Page 3

BI-MONTLY MEETING & ATMA MEETING Bi-monthly meeting and KVK-ATMA interface meetings involving State Department of Agriculture, UAS Dharwad and ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra was held on June 23 rd, 2017 at KVK campus where in Associate Director of Extension and Scientists from UAS, Dharwad, Joint Director, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, AAOs and the staff of ATMA of Agriculture Department of Gadag district and all KVK Scientists attended. The participants discussed about the crop condition of Kharif and Rabi crops, pest and disease management and rainfall. University Experts and KVK Scientists suggested suitable solutions to the field problems. RAWE PROGRAMME OF AGRICULTURE STUDENTS Twenty six students from College of Agriculture, Kalaburagi attended Rural Agricultural Work Experience training at ICAR-K.H.Patil Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hulkoti from 19-06-2017 to 24-06-2017. ON FARM TESTINGS For higher productivity, on-farm testings on intercropping of Redgram (TS-3R) + Greengram (DGGV-2) and Redgram (TS-3R) + Blackgram (DU-1) were conducted at Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk in 3 farmers field The OFTs on intercropping of Bt. Cotton+Greengram (DGGV-2) in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:2 were conducted in 3 farmers fields at Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk for higher returns and higher productivity. FRONTLINE DEMONSTRATIONS Demonstrations of Integrated Crop Management in Spreading Groundnut (KDG-123) crop were conducted in Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk in 3 farmers fields. Cluster Frontline demonstrations under Natural Food Security Mission for Redgram (TS-3R variety) were conducted in Kochalapur village of Ron Taluk in 20 farmers fields in 8 hectare area. Under NOOP, demonstrations of Integrated Crop Management in Groundnut (variety 42-52) were laid out in Jakkali village of Ron Taluk in 30 hectare area of 75 farmers fields. TRAINING PROGRAMMES 19-21 April, 2017: Three off-campus trainings on Dryland Horticulture at Mahalingapur (Gadag Taluk), Navebhavanur and Chikkasavanur village (Shirahatti Taluk) were conducted to 164 farmers. 22 nd April, 2017: Trainings on Soil sampling techniques for soil analysis were conducted to 69 farmers of Asundi and Binkadakatti village of Gadag Taluk. 26 th April, 2017: Training on Soil moisture conservation practices was organised to 25 farmers of Hirehandigol village. May, 2017: Off-campus training on Kharif crops was conducted to 66 farmers of Madolli village of Shirahatti Block. Page 4

9 th May, 2017: One day on-campus training on soil and water conservation practices to 68 farmers was conducted at KVK. 22 nd May, 2017: One day on-campus training on importance of millets in diet was conducted to 31 farmwomen of Binkadakatti village of Gadag block. 25 th May & 24 th June, 2017: The Anganwadi workers of Women and Child Welfare Department working in Lakshmeshwara and Yalavatti circle of Shirahatti block were trained in Balanced diet, Nutrition and importance of millets in diet. 23 rd June, 2017: In collaboration with Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Gramabhivruddhi Yozane, KVK organised training on Scientific dairy farming at Mushigeri village of Ron block. 25 th June, 2017: In collaboration with Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Gramabhivruddhi Yozane, KVK organised training on organic inputs preparation to 310 farmwomen, 48 farmers and 4 extension functionaries. WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS/TRAININGS/MEETINGS ATTENDED BY KVK STAFF 3-5 May, 2017: Annual review meeting of KVKs of Zone VIII for the year 2016-17 was conducted at ICAR- KVK, Goa. Shri S.H.
