ANNOUNCEMENT: Job Opening JOB TITLE: Metro Detroit AFL- CIO Labor Liaison LOCATION: Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties BACKGROUND The Metro Detroit- AFLCIO is a chartered organization of the National AFL- CIO, and is a coalition of local unions in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties in Michigan. Our organization works to stimulate and coordinate communications and mobilization activity among affiliates and allies throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. We focus on supporting the legislative, political, organizing, and solidarity goals of the labor movement locally, statewide, and nationally. We are governed by an elected Executive Board and Delegate Body, and headed by a President. POSITION OVERVIEW The Metro Detroit AFL- CIO Labor Liaison serves as an advocate on issues that both the United Way and the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO agree on, and coordinates volunteer recruitment and training of local union activists to serve as advocates for the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO. The Liaison will develop and coordinate volunteer efforts on behalf of the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO to provide services to working families in need, provide presentations and support for United Way campaigns in unionized workplaces, and engage community organizations and volunteers in the work of the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO to build alliances to support working family issues. DUTIES Attend monthly community services meetings Keep accurate records of volunteer participation Coordinate strategic service projects that support direct services Recruit Community Services volunteers and members for the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO Submit bi- weekly reports to Metro Detroit AFL- CIO President and Secretary Treasurer 1
Participate in community and public policy advocacy as direct by the Metro Detroit AFL- CIO Submit monthly report to United Way for Southeastern Michigan Community Services Director Solicit labor endorsement letters from Local Unions in support of local United Way campaign(s) QUALIFICATIONS Applicants should have the following qualifications: Computer and social media skills Organization, mobilization, communication and administrative skills Knowledge of the local voluntary sector, with specific understanding of the local United Way network Knowledge of organized labor, with basic understanding of the local labor movement and its community allies A member in good standing of an AFL- CIO affiliated union. A non- union member or a member of an unaffiliated local union may be selected, but must join a Central Labor Council affiliated Local Union as a condition of employment with the approval of the AFL- CIO office of State and Local Affiliates.
