CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY SANTIAGO, CHILE U.S. Embassy Santiago, Chile 17
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY SANTIAGO, CHILE The U.S. Embassy in Santiago was the first overseas U.S. Diplomatic mission to install a Dedicated Heat Recovery Chiller (DHRC ) The Dedicated Heat Recovery Chiller (DHRC ) is an Americanmade, ultra-high efficiency chiller that reclaims waste heat from electrical loads, and converts it into hot water to heat the Embassy. This reduces the amount of air conditioning required, and saves on the consumption of natural gas, and electricity. 18
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY SANTIAGO, CHILE DHRC helped the embassy save emissions through energy savings, water, chemicals, and costs: 170 Metric Tons of CO 2e emissions a year 2 Million gallons of water per a year are saved by eliminating evaporative cooling Eliminated cooling tower biocide and anti-corrosion chemicals 3.5 years expected payback 19

CARBON REDUCTIONS GREEN U.S. EMBASSIES Case Study HELSINKI, FINLAND CASE STUDY 23
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY HELSINKI, FINLAND The embodied energy of the renovation was reduced by maintaining 64% of the building's original structure Projected to reduce energy by 46% R-42 Insulation Natural Ventilation Air-side Economizers Triple-glazed windows 24
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY HELSINKI, FINLAND The Embassy is connected to District Chilled and Hot Water Third largest cooling system in Europe The buildings require no chillers or large boilers 1/3 of the cooling comes from the Gulf of Finland emissions free 1/3 of the cooling comes from absorption chillers District Energy Diagram, Helsingin Energia 25
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY HELSINKI, FINLAND The Innovation Center is the first U.S. Diplomatic facility to employ 100% daylight dimming, Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Organic LED (OLED) for interior and exterior lighting 26

CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal 28
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL Transportation Management: 75% of embassy employees commute to work using means other than a single-occupant vehicle. Electric vehicles are used for routine maintenance needs U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL :: 2013 29
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL Irrigation Management: On-site well water is treated to potable standards, generating backwash. The backwash is reused to meet 100% of the compound s irrigation needs. The irrigation system is linked to a rain sensor which ensures that the system takes advantage of the natural cycle of the monsoon. U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL :: 2013 30
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL Energy Management: 25 solar hot water panels meet the hot water demands of the buildings so boilers are no longer needed to run on a regular basis. U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL :: 2013 31
CASE STUDY U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL Waste Management: Paper, cardboard, glass, metals, and plastics are all recycled locally. Larger items such as appliances, furniture and electronics are auctioned for reuse. The embassy is investigating the possibility of diverting food and yard waste by partnering with local farms who can take the waste as donations. U.S. EMBASSY KATHMANDU, NEPAL :: 2013 32
