action for the environment: growing use of renewable energy through Oryx project Orange rolls-out Solar-fed Base Stations in AMEA region (more than 900 are currently running). Oryx. It aims at limiting our carbon footprint (for each site, 13000 l of fuel are yearly saved compared to a traditional engine-based solution) and is consistent with Orange global commitment of a 20% reduction in its CO2 emissions in 2020 versus 2006. Our objective is to increase the percentage of renewable energy in our overall energy consumption to reach 25% in 2015 in new mobile stations (primarily in Africa). Our efforts specifically involve supplying solar energy to base stations (relay antennae) in Africa and in Southern European countries, where real production potential exists. Around these sites, we seek to provide the local communities with an access to the potential energy surplus. This is the target of Karazomé community power experiment 7

8 Karazomé Village, Maradi region - Niger

Community power in Karazomé, Niger Dispensary ORYX Orange site Karazomé, a village of the Maradi region, is located nearby an Oryx site. A dispensary is a hundred meters far from the site and was chosen as a pilot site for testing the sharing of the energy surplus (around 25%) from the telecom site. This enables to run several lights, a fan, and a refrigerator for vaccines (with the help of an additional rooftop solar panel supplied by Orange) This initiative improves access to medical care and health of rural populations. It also involves the local community in modernization works for the dispensary, with a skill transfer. Further developments are planned, with the help of an NGO Electriciens Sans Frontières (Electricians without borders) and funding from Orange foundation to extend the building and lodge a permanent practical nurse.
