Welcome to the first Cotton Australia Cotton Annual Each year Cotton Australia will publish this pocket-sized book, a collection of up-to-date statistics about 20 key areas of cotton production in Australia: crop size, area, forecasts, yield, quality, price, water, biotechnology and a whole lot more. Unless stated otherwise, the numbers quoted in this booklet relate to the 2011-12 Australian cotton crop. Sources and references are identified at the back. Cotton s total water use In 2010-11, the largest area of irrigated land in Australia was pasture for grazing, which accounted for Cotton crop water requirements Cotton s average irrigation requirement is 538,000 5.2 hectares or 27% of the total area irrigated megalitres per hectare The largest volume of irrigation water was applied to cotton, which used 1,882 gigalitres or 28% of the national irrigation total for the year (6,645 gigalitres) This compares to other summer crops such as: rice (10.1ML/ha) soybeans (6-8 ML/ha) maize (8-9 ML/ha) nurseries, cut flowers and turf (4.2 ML/ha) 21
