Valmet DNA for the Power Industry The best possible payback
The Best Possible Payback Every power producer is looking for new ways to boost efficiency, meet emission limits and minimize costs. The biggest question on the market remains the same: What happens next? In today s economic environment power plant operation must be cost-effective and undisturbed. Tough production goals together with legislative requirements set huge demands on power producers. The only unchangeable is change itself. To stay competitive plants must be able to ensure reliability throughout all process operations. The key to this reliability is automation. Automation enables plants to control and optimize all plant operations. The payback is calculated in higher efficiency and availability. Unpredictable shutdowns Faster start-ups Feeling of control Bandirma, EnerjiSA Picture: AE&E Power Plant Systems GmbH CASE: Combining business and process information in Turkey The Bandirma combined cycle plant is located in the seaport city, opposite of Istanbul on the southern coast of the Marmara Sea. The 930 MWe green field plant relies on its Valmet DNA *) process control system, which integrates the entire plant operations into the same control room. The plant also applied an integrated information management system, which provides information both for the plant management and for operation and maintenance staff. The information is utilized for efficient monitoring of the plant operations, as well as for performance and equipment analysis. 3
4 CASE: Jyväskylän Voima Keljonlahti power plant It s all by Valmet Keljonlahti power plant is a magnificent overall process automation system delivery from Valmet *). When the project team was ready with their work, the local Valmet office took over responsibility of the plant s everyday reality. The Keljonlahti power plant generates both electricity and district heat for the growing economic region around Jyväskylä, Finland. The peat and wood-fired plant facilitates an overall fuel capacity of 480 MW. The Keljonlahti plant has been a huge greenfield project, in which Valmet was in charge for the process automation including turbine controller, safety systems, condition monitoring, and reporting, as well as control valves and field devices. Integrated turbine controller pays off At Keljonlahti, also the turbine controls have been implemented into the plant s automation system. The more functions we can get integrated, the more easily operable the plant will be, the turbine controller is an excellent example of that, says Jari Ihalainen, Maintenance Manager, Electric Automation. His satisfaction is shared by the Production Manager, Tero Saarno: After seeing how well this functions, it is very difficult to understand why the turbine controls or any other of the plant s sub-systems should be based on separate logics. Connected around the clock When the project team completed their job, the local Valmet office joined in to take over responsibility. The local experts are the connection to the worldwide Valmet organization, which ensures that the best expertise is constantly available. Jyväskylän Voima has also entered into a maintenance agreement, which is both the plant s selection and an opportunity opened by today s technology. No one can manage the entire system from A to Z. For instance, we do not possess in-depth knowledge of system networks and info systems, which makes the maintenance agreement a great advantage for us, says Ihalainen.

The Best Available Technology to Meet the Green Challenge The emission limits worldwide are going to be reset and tightened. For instance, The Industrial Emission Directive is setting their new limits in 2016 for existing plants in EU. Nobody knows what exactly will happen, but for sure, the industry is going to need the best possible technology to hit the targets. Valmet DNA enables power plants to meet the insecure future with applications that help meet emission limits, and for instance burn biofuels and/or waste. Added with versatile and efficient tools for emission control and monitoring, as well as authority reporting, power plants can depend on meeting any of the future regulations safely with the best available technology. CASE: Riverside, Belvedere Leading the way towards less landfilling London landfills 53% of its municipal solid waste, and since space is running out, the government is looking for alternatives. Among the few waste treatment facilities in the capital area, Riverside Resource Recovery Ltd. has built a new waste to energy plant, which will be the largest in UK when completed. In addition to the Metso DNA process control system, which runs the entire plant operation, Metso has supplied the plant with information management systems and boiler protection systems with several connections to other systems. Only four days after the start-up the boiler system was running fully automatically and within two weeks it was following remote commands. According to the customer: All project goals have been fulfilled. 6
Bioenergy plays a central role in the creation of more sustainable energy systems worldwide. Valmet is one of the world s leading suppliers of bioenergy solutions, and we deliver a full-scope of solutions for biomass combustion. These include the reception and handling of fuel, the boiler plant, the flue-gas cleaning system, and complete power plant automation, as well as lifecycle services to ensure the efficient operation of the plant. CASE: Dalkia turned a greener page The start-up of the Valmet power boiler was an important landmark for the energy company Dalkia in Facture, Southwest France. The boiler is the largest biomass boiler used for energy production in France, thus making the 50 MWe plant among the biggest in Central Europe. The combined heat and power plant mainly uses bark and forest residue as fuel to produce 50 megawatts of electricity for the national grid and 74 megawatts of process steam for Smurfit Kappa s paper mill. Complete automation of the power plant enables the plant to benefit from efficient process control, compatible reporting and communication. A full-scope solution for managing emissions The full-scope solution provides both immediate and long-term advantages for the environment, power generation process, productivity and resource management. Proven solutions in BFB combustion, automation including combustion optimization and fuel handling enable the plant to operate in the framework set by tight emission guarantees. And not just that: They also enable them to meet future regulations as well. A seamlessly compatible solution The entire power plant operation is concentrated into one plant with one automation system and reporting system for utilizing steam produced in the new power boiler and the old recovery boiler. The Valmet delivery included the boiler, flue-gas cleaning and fuel handling systems as well as the complete automation of the power plant, which ensures, among other things, that Dalkia benefits from compatible reporting and communication. Environmental applications on top of the Valmet DNA The environmental applications are designed to give a full view of emission levels to a wide range of users and authorities. The plant is able to monitor emission levels on-line. Diverse reports facilitate maintenance planning, emissions analyses as well as reporting according to EU directives and Dalkia s environmental permit. Remote users have access to portal and web reports. 90 years of experience in the power industry CASE: Lagisza, Poland The world s first supercritical CFB is controlled by Valmet Lagisza power plant has been replacing its outdated capacity with high-efficiency and environmentally sound technologies. As part of this program, the plant replaced its coal-fired boiler with a new circulating fluidized bed boiler, which is the world s largest CFB boiler and at the same the world s first supercritical CFB unit. Valmet was chosen to deliver the control system with performance monitoring and superior controls for the new boiler plant. Valmet s past experience in CFB boiler automation was the decisive factor in the project. NO x and CO 2 emissions 7
