MAKING PACKAGING BETTER Because every product deserves better packaging.

THE WORLD S TOUGHEST PACKAGING TEST Korsnäs produces board and paper of the utmost, world-leading standard specifi cally developed for tomorrow s advanced packaging solutions. This is packaging that enables our customers to save resources, improve their profi tability and develop their brands. Packaging that is simple to use while preserving the quality of products and being kind to the environment. The best proof of our customers success are the millions of packages produced using materials from Korsnäs that are used around the world on a daily basis. There is no tougher test for packaging. NEW LIFESTYLES BRING NEW NEEDS Packaging is a reflection of the times. It is formed by people s lifestyles, consumption patterns and practical needs. Smaller families and an increasing number of person households exemplify trends that are increasing demand for pre-prepared and semi-manufactured ed goods. single- Another has been the success of food on the go. They all help increase the need for intelligent packaging solutions. 2 COMPANY PRESENTATION

THE RIGHT PACKAGING THE RIGHT MATERIALS The advanced packaging materials we produce form just one part of the value that we add. The expertise we offer through various services plays just as important a role. THE PATH TO THE OPTIMUM PACKAGING SOLUTION Correctly designed, packaging works around the clock. Not only with its basic task of protecting and preserving, but also as a tireless marketing channel. We therefore attach great importance to helping customers identify the right packaging solution for each product and purpose. From packaging optimisation and functional design to product safety and graphic design. This may involve practical aspects, such as fi nding an easy way to open and reseal a juice package, to developing a chocolate box with optimum sales impact on shop shelves. We bring these services together in what we call Korsnäs Packaging Performance Service. Our materials continuously generate new packaging possibilities. PACKAGING MATERIALS FOR EVERY NEED Korsnäs is one of the world s leading producers of advanced, high-quality packaging materials, such as liquid packaging board, board, sack and kraft paper, and white top kraft liner. Qualities that make these products successful are strength, stiffness and formability. Added to these are superior graphic characteristics. These enable our customers to create packaging that is as functional as it is attractive. Packaging that contributes to sales of products as diverse as milk and wine, cosmetics and electronics, food and clothes. COMPANY PRESENTATION 5

KNOWLEDGE GENERATES VALUE Over the years, Korsnäs has amassed a unique knowledge of fi bre-based materials and packaging. With this core strength, we seek constantly to improve the attributes of our materials, enhance product quality and refi ne our production processes. WITH KNOWLEDGE AS A RAW MATERIAL It all starts with an in-depth knowledge of long, strong virgin fi bre and how its qualities can best be used for various objectives. The goal is to always develop packaging materials that not only protect products but that also enhance sales, are easy to handle and meet stringent environmental and climate requirements. For this reason, we are continuously optimising a long list of attributes in our materials. This ranges from mechanical qualities, such as tearing resistance and stiffness, elasticity and formability to the material s capacity to resist cold, heat and moisture, while not absorbing or emitting odour or taste. This process continues on a daily basis, both in our laboratories and at our production facilities. All of our approximately 1,700 employees contribute, each in their own way, to this continuous process of learning and development. Today s packaging must withstand so much. And still look good. MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT BASED ON SCIENCE Our development efforts are conducted in close cooperation with customers, universities, colleges and research institutes, as well as through our internal specialist expertise. At our board lab, we subject a variety of packaging materials to analyses and physical tests. We solve practical material problems with the help of scanning electron microscopy. We use sensor technology to perform quality controls on our products. Panel assessments are performed to examine how different materials meet requirements in terms of odour and residual taste. And at our pilot coating facility, we develop new coating concepts under realistic conditions. 6 COMPANY PRESENTATION

8 COMPANY PRESENTATION Just like our personnel, our board and paper machines are of the very best, world-class standard.

WORLD-LEADING PRODUCTION FACILITIES Through continuous and long-term investment, Korsnäs has developed some of the foremost production facilities in the world. This allows us to offer a unique combination of highquality products and unbeatable service. CONTINUOUS AND DAY-TO-DAY IMPROVEMENT A constant hunt is in progress, in all our areas of operations, to increase product quality and optimise production processes. At the same time, we strive consistently to ensure high delivery reliability, a superior level of service and effi cient quality control. We establish the basic conditions necessary by investing long-term in new technology and advanced equipment. But it is our skilled, inquisitive and results-oriented employees who really make the biggest difference. Their knowledge and participation in the quality process contribute to Korsnäs success. Safety and work environment efforts pervade our entire operations. We focus on preventive measures in particular and this has delivered good results for many years. Each year, we produce more than a million tonnes of board and paper. Korsnäs Gävle, located on the Baltic sea coast and adjacent to the major forests of central Sweden, produces both board and paper. Korsnäs Frövi, surrounded by forests and lakes, is a streamlined board mill. Korsnäs Rockhammar, produces CTMP pulp for direct delivery to the Frövi mill, which is very close by. COMPANY PRESENTATION 9

PROCESSES THAT ARE ECONOMICAL IN THEIR USE OF RESOURCES It all starts with pure forest raw materials. In the ensuing refi nement chain, we make use of every opportunity, at each stage, to enhance the effi ciency of our energy consumption and to decrease our emissions to air and water. Our ambition is not only to follow authorities requirements but to stay one step ahead. WORKING FOR MORE EFFICIENT AND CLEANER OPERATIONS We have made considerable progress in the transition from fossil fuels to biofuels. Today, we are more than two-thirds self-suffi cient thanks to fuels produced in-house, such as black liquor and bark. To further enhance effi ciency, we are investing in our mills energy systems, including in a new biofuel boiler and evaporation plant. The energy we do not use ourselves is passed on to the local district heating network. At the same time, we work consistently and preventively to decrease our emissions to air and water. Consequently, we are continuously refi ning our methods to use water effi ciently, to purify process water and to prevent chemical emissions. We are reducing emissions of harmful particles by fi ltering fl ue gases. And we are gradually adjusting our fuel supply to reduce emissions of fossil CO 2.. The company s vision is to cease using fossil fuels entirely in its production processes. Using our own fuels makes us two-thirds self-suffi cient in terms of energy. Purchased energy Energy generated in-house THE JOURNEY TOWARDS ENVIRONMENTALLY EFFICIENT TRANSPORT By optimising transport and logistics flows throughout the production chain, we are able to decrease both energy consumption and environmental impact. Raw wood material is transported from the forest to our mills by truck, rail and ship. More than half of deliveries of completed products to customers are made by rail. Since such transports involve considerable distances, we invest a great deal of effort into coordinating them with other players and transport chains across Europe. 10 COMPANY PRESENTATION

By working with the supply of raw materials in an active and committed manner, we can guarantee that all of our products derive from sustainable forestry. 12 COMPANY PRESENTATION

SUSTAINABLE FROM SEEDLING TO PRODUCT We produce our packaging materials using strong, pure virgin fi bre from sustainably managed Nordic forests. Since board and paper form part of a natural cycle, they contribute to new forest raw materials, generation after generation. A GENUINE ECOCYCLE PRODUCT Board and paper are renewable products whose raw materials are taken from nature and continuously renewed. Once packaging has served its purpose, it can be recovered as new paper pulp or converted into energy. Through photosynthesis, the carbon dioxide released in the energy conversion process helps build up new biomass. In this way, board and paper are unbeatable compared with other packaging materials, such as plastics and metals, that are based on fi nite resources. In addition, intelligent packaging solutions help reduce resource wastage in the form of spoiled foods and other goods. To provide a clear account of such aspects, we provide environmental product declarations (EPDs) for an increasing number of our products. These give completely open, comparable and externally verifi ed data on environmental impact and potential environmental benefi ts. Throughout its lifecycle, board and paper packaging helps bind CO 2. RESPECT ROOTED IN THE FOREST Forest raw materials are crucial to our quality products. The pure virgin fibre we use comes from forestry operations applying stringent nature conservation requirements to preserve biological diversity. Regrowth in these forests exceeds harvesting and all timber can be traced to the area from which it originated. Korsnäs offers products from forestry operations that are FSC and PEFC-certified. COMPANY PRESENTATION 13

WITH A LONG-TERM VISION We are driven by our vision that every product deserves better packaging. This also embodies consideration and care for customers, consumers, employees, the environment and society. It is on the basis of this vision that we have formulated our long-term promise: Making packaging better. KORSNÄS IS GROWING IN AN EXPANSIVE GLOBAL MARKET Our customers are primarily converters, companies that produce packaging for beverage and food companies. Quality packaging that provides opportunities to enhance economic aspects and sustainability while contributing to the sales process through its attractive appearance is a prerequisite for sustained generation of value. Korsnäs is developing its operations together with partners and customers throughout Europe and increasingly large areas of the world. Many of the products packaged with our materials are used on a daily basis all over the world. Through our customers, packages made from materials produced by Korsnäs reach virtually every corner of the world. WITH OUR SIGHTS SET ON THE PACKAGING OF TOMORROW With world-class knowledge and cutting-edge resources, Korsnäs develops premium, virgin fibre-based materials for tomorrow s advanced packaging solutions. These solutions help corporations save resources, grow brands and boost profitability. They also help consumers preserve the environment while enjoying increased user-friendliness, better product quality and improved customer satisfaction. 14 COMPANY PRESENTATION
