Funding Opportunities for Nutrient Recycling 23.11.2017 Mikko Rahtola agronomist, project coordinator Government Key Project Making Use of Nutrients Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) 1

Making use of agricultural nutrients 2016-18 The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has financed a 3 year project Making Use of Agricultural Nutrients to be carried out by Natural Resource Institute Finland (Luke). One of the government key projects The aim of the project is to secure that 50 % of the nutrients in manure and sewage sludge are in effective use in sensitive areas by 2025.

GOVERNMENT KEY PROJECT Employment and competence 170 milj. Knowledge and Education 300 milj. Wellfare and Health 130 milj. Bioeconomy and Clean Solutions 300 milj. Digitalisation, Experiments and deregulation 100 milj. Carbon free, clean and renewable energy Get wood moving, new products from the forests Breakthrough of circular economy and clean solutions Finnish food production to be profitable, trade balance and blue economy up Nature conservation policy with trust and fair means

GOVERNMENT KEY PROJECT Bioeconomy and clean solutions Key project 3. Breakthrough of circular economy, getting waters into good condition, tot 34 milj 2016: tot 12 milj, 2017: tot 11 milj,2018: tot 11 milj Experimental programme 2016-2018 tot 12,4 milj Making use of Agricultural nutrients 2016-2018 Nutrient recycling programme Sewage pilots 2016-2018 Horse manure programme 2016-2018 Programme for the management of Water Resources and the Marine Environment

OTHER FINANCING INSTRUMENTS Rural Development Funds Environmental programm about 1,6 bilj. /7 v Controlling nutrient leakage, protection zones, winter-cover, catch-crops, better use of manure, circulation of nutrients and organic matter Water System Protection Special Financing Tekes Blue Bioeconomy Private Investors, i.e. Finnish Business Angels Network Horizon2020 largest research funding instrument in EU EIP, European Innnovation Programm Foundations www.saatiopalvelu.fi Katso myös: http://www.biotalous.fi/biotalouden-rahoituslahteet/ 22.9.2017 Sivu 6

Statistics + Map service: Biomass atlas

TECHNOLOGIES WE ARE LOOKING FOR Separation techniques Sorting and combining of sideproduct flows Process improvements Minimizing harmfull substances Affecting to the biodegradabality of materials Optimizing processes by the help of chemistry and microbiology Agronomical solutions Utilisation of digital possibilities New type of Co-operations Symbiotic systems Contract models 22.9.2017 Sivu 8

WHAT CAN WE ACHIEVE? Less environmental problems and leakage of nutrients (N,P,S) More commercial organic fertilizers NB, swedish list of organic fertilizers From waste to added value Waste-> sideproducts-> energy-> feed-> food-> medicin-> etc Service models, innovations, knowledge Networks, local ecosystems Export possibilities Base for nature turism development 22.9.2017 Sivu 9

BIG ISSUES: ENERGY, FOOD SECURITY, JOBS AND SOIL CARBON In Finland energy self sufficiency is now only 30 %!! With the help of renewables it can be rised up to 50-60 % + recycled nutrients Yearly only 4 increase to soil carbon will be enough to prohibit climate change Wood pulp, biochar etc. 100 000 new jobs prospected by 2025 with bioeconomy 22.9.2017 Sivu 10
