ITS deployment What is ITS about? ERTICO defines ITS as: The use of Information and Communication Technologies in the field of transport, to create real time flow of information and data in order to enable more intelligent use of infrastructures and vehicles and to enhance the management of traffic and mobility (www.ertico.com)
ITS deployment Current situation in SEE area Various levels of ITS deployment across SEE countries EC ITS Directive national implementations Lack of coordination between projects Lack of coordination, harmonization and interoperability between SEE countries Lack of interfaces between modes of transport Scarce transport networks Low levels of ICT penetration
ITS deployment EC ITS Framework Action Plan for the Deployment of ITS in Europe COM(2008) 886 final Action 1: Optimal use of road, traffic and travel data Action 2: Continuity of traffic and freight management ITS services on European transport corridors and in conurbations Action 3: Road safety and security Action 4: Integration of the vehicle into the transport infrastructure Action 5: Data security and protection, and liability issues Action 6: European ITS cooperation and coordination Aim: Accelerate and coordinate the deployment of ITS in road transport, including interfaces with other transport modes
ITS deployment EC ITS Framework Directive 2010/40/EU Framework for the deployment of ITS in the field of road transport and for interfaces with other modes of transport Priority Area 1: Optimal use of road, traffic and travel data Priority Area 2: Continuity of traffic and freight management ITS services Priority Area 3: ITS road safety and security applications, Priority Area 4: Linking the vehicle with the transport infrastructure. Aim: Establish a framework to support the coordinated and coherent deployment of interoperable ITS throughout the EU
ITS deployment EC ITS Framework Directive 2010/40/EU priority actions for the development and use of specification and standards Action 1: Provision of EU-wide multimodal travel information services Action 2: Provision of EU-wide real-time traffic information services Action 3: Data and procedures for the provision, where possible, of road safety related minimum universal traffic information free of charge to users Action 4: Harmonised provision for an interoperable EU-wide ecall Action 5: Provision of information services for safe and secure parking places for trucks and commercial vehicles Action 6: Provision of reservation services for safe and secure parking places for trucks and commercial vehicles

SEE-ITS area SEE-ITS project overview SEE-ITS area
Project objectives Overall SEE-ITS objectives: Stimulate cooperation and interoperability between isolated ITS applications Support seamless mobility and enhanced interfaces between transport modes Develop an institutional and technical framework for harmonized ITS specifications Define a generic cooperation model Coherence with EC ITS Directive in SEE area countries
Project objectives Integration of ITS at four levels: Between motorways and secondary/rural road networks Between inter-urban and urban networks Between road networks and other modes of transport (inland waterways, rail, air, other) Between SEE area countries considering the transnational approach envisaged by the SEE programme the coherence with the objectives, priorities and actions set out by the EC ITS Directive
Project objectives SEE-ITS objectives will be met through: Analysis and understanding of the current situation Support for the adaptation of EC ITS Directive in SEE countries Execution of focused demos to assess ITS applications Analysis of the impacts of ITS applications Proposals for specifications towards interoperable ITS in the SEE area CBAs/MCAs for the deployment of ITS in the SEE area Consultations with stakeholders and establishment of collaboration mechanisms (SEE-ITS workshops, SEE-ITS Stakeholders Panel & SEE-ITS Platform for ITS) Proposals for long-term investment plans
