The Position & Key Priorities This Managing Director position represents a compelling opportunity to foster impact at the unique intersection of economic growth, labor migration and human rights. Reporting to the Head of Strategy, Learning, and Impact, the Managing Director (MD) will lead and develop HU s Human Trafficking and Labor Migration portfolio. Sitting at the epicenter of the movement, HU is making tangible progress towards fairer and more ethical labor practices, partnering and collaborating with key stakeholders locally and internationally. Migrant workers play a critical role in contributing to the development of countries and their respective economies, but often fall outside the bounds of legal protection within their home and host countries. As a result, this particular labor group is rendered susceptible to exploitation, abuse and human trafficking. HU takes a holistic, systems-based approach to labor and trafficking issues, with the goal of disrupting perpetuating cycles of forced labor and other unethical practices. The MD and his/her team will work with and through the workers themselves, the businesses that employ them, and the governments setting the laws and policies around labor rights and migration cycles to reduce corruption and improve conditions for workers and their families. With established strategic initiatives in Nepal, Qatar and Thailand, the MD will guide and coach his or her direct reports in support of setting the strategy, vision and direction for these streams of work. S/he will work with the team to synthesize learnings, iterating on current strategies and priorities to maximize the impact, scalability and sustainability of the work. The MD will also be accountable for further defining and shaping the overall scope and breadth of the portfolio itself. Coordinating across internal and external stakeholders, the MD will drive towards a better understanding and communication of how HU s point of view on this portfolio of work manifests itself in the various spheres of influence within the labor rights space. Critical to this position is the ability to lead strong, high performing teams. Hiring, retaining and developing top talent, while also providing guidance and direction is key. As a leader of leaders, the MD will be responsible for nurturing and further improving an already strong and connected culture, both among new hires and with HU s headquarters.
The Ideal Candidate Humanity United seeks a curious mind and interpersonal leader to motivate and inspire team members as they work to increase impact across strategic initiatives in the Human Trafficking and Labor Migration Portfolio. Able to look at the portfolio s broad strategy and mission objectives with a beginner s eye, the new Managing Director will bring fresh perspective to the work HU already has underway. Deliberative and intellectual, the ideal candidate will apply a highly strategic lens to the work, making recommendations on how to progress, where to make strategic pivots, and incorporate learnings. The new MD must be a skilled strategist, communicator and comfortable conveying his/her recommendations in front of a variety of external stakeholders, thought leaders, board members, and colleagues across the organization. While s/he must have a strong passion for labor migration and human trafficking issues, s/he does not necessarily need to have direct experience in this area. A strong understanding of the nature and scope of this work, along with an intellectual curiosity and proven track record of strategic programmatic success in his or her respective field of work, is required. Experience managing programs internationally across different contexts and cultures is ideal. The selected candidate must be a strong manager of people and able to provide strategic oversight to team members who are accountable for fleshing out the nuts and bolts of program development, implementation and scale. With unwavering ethics and values, the new MD will develop and improve its program initiatives while ensuring the integrity of HU s systems practice across portfolio programs and teams. As part of a growing team, the MD must be a strong and enthusiastic manager of people, able to exercise outstanding judgement, emotional intelligence, and deep listening skills. S/he must have demonstrated experience as a leader by influence rather than authority. The ideal candidate will be expected to guide each team member towards greater professional growth and success, as well as empower and mentor direct reports to develop and cultivate their own high performing teams, thereby creating an environment in which each individual can be gratified and successful. Honest, thoughtful, warm and direct, the MD will be an effective communicator, able to foster camaraderie and synergy across offices. The ideal candidate will be agile, adaptable, autonomous, and have a high tolerance for ambiguity. Humble and not easily deterred, the selected candidate is unshaken by strong opinions in the workplace. S/he must be a source of strength and guidance across initiatives, among colleagues and team members, ensuring success and support across the organization, while also nurturing peer relationships and active networks.
Minimum Qualifications A minimum of 20 years of work experience across a range of sectors (e.g., foundation, NGO, advocacy organization, government, consulting, private sector or other) is required, as is formal training and experience in strategy development and implementation. An advanced degree in public policy, international affairs, political science, law or other relevant field is preferred. Candidates must also possess a high level of integrity that embodies and reflects HU s core values. The strong preference is for this position to be based in San Francisco, but Washington D.C. is also an option. This role requires frequent domestic and international travel.
