Plastic Water Bottles Are Being Banned. Is Your Business Prepared? The U.S., Canada and the European Union are restricting and even banning clear plastic water bottles made with PET. PET is polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic made from two monomers modified ethylene glycol and purified terephthalic acid. They are combined to form the polymer called polyethylene terephthalate or PET. PET Water Bottles Linked to Health Problems Unfortunately, a chemical known as BPA or Bisphenol A leaches into the water from the plastic. This compound is known to mimic oestrogen, but studies have recently found that BPA could lead to issues such as diabetes, heart disease, and liver problems 1. As a result, the E.U., the U.S. and Canada banned PET for use in baby bottles. 2 Governments worldwide are being pressured to ban all plastic water bottles for this reason and the pollution. 3 We Are Swimming in a Tidal Wave of Plastic Bottle Pollution Landfills, rivers and streets are choked with plastic water bottles creating a disposal nightmare for every country around the world. 50 million bottles are thrown away every day in the U.S. and 13 billion a year for the U.K. alone 4. The call for banning water bottles to stop this pollution is getting louder every day.
