Instagram Guide: Phase 1 Overview: Instagram is an online mobile photo and video based social networking service that enables users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms. Origami Owl uses Instagram as a fun way to share lifestyle photos, Locket stories, videos and updates from around The Nest with Designers and Customers. Getting Started: Step 1: Download Instagram to your smartphone or tablet by visiting the application store for your device (ios from the Apple App Store, Android from the Google Play Store, etc.) Step 2: Tap the Instagram icon once app has been downloaded to your device to open it Step 3: Tap Sign Up, enter your email address, and click Next. You can also sign up with your Facebook account by clicking Log In With Facebook 1
Step 4: If you register with email, create a username and password, fill out your profile info and then tap Done. (If you register with Facebook, you'll be prompted to log into your Facebook account if you're currently logged out.) TIP: Keep in mind, if you sign up with email, make sure you enter your email address correctly and you choose an email address that only you can access. If you log out and forget your password, you'll need access to your email to get back into your Instagram account. Learn more about keeping your account secure. Then confirm your email address by clicking Yes. Step 5: Enter your name and phone number that you wish to be associated with your Instagram account (optional) 2
Step 6: Use Facebook to connect with your friends, family, or customers (this is optional click SKIP to bypass this step) Step 7: Use your contacts from your smartphone or tablet to connect on Instagram (This is optional click SKIP to bypass this step) Step 8: Click on topics you are interested to allow Instagram to help you explore posts, then click Continue TIP: As an O2 Designer, we recommend selecting Beauty, Fashion, Sports, Art & Design, Crafts, and Weddings to start! 3
Step 9: Instagram will then show you suggested accounts to follow based on your interests. Scroll to chose which accounts, if any, you would like to see posts from, then click the arrow in the top right hand corner to proceed. Step 10: Your Instagram account is now set up! You are ready to connect and share stories with others! TIP: Be sure to follow @OrigamiOwl, your mentor, and @bella weems to stay up to date on what s new! A part of the Vital Behaviors is to wear your O2 jewelry so why not share your favorite Locket looks and invite your community to share theirs, as well! This can spark new conversations that can lead to new customers or even new Jewelry Bar Hostesses! Example Instagram Post LiveSparkly.com is a platform that was created to share heartwarming Living Locket stories with the Origami Owl community. Designers, Customers and Employees are encouraged to submit their personal stories under the Share Your Story category on the LiveSparkly.com website. Submitted stories will be reviewed on a weekly basis. Should your story be chosen you will be contacted by the Nest for an interview and the opportunity for your story to be shared on the new platform! TIP: If you d like, we welcome you to submit your own stories at www.livesparkly.com and share them on your social media pages using #LiveSparkly! Instagram Terms to Know BIT.LY A link shortening site that allows users to easily shorten, save and share your URL s helping to post links to characterrestrictive social media sites (like Twitter) and clean up long URLs. Also allows you to track traffic generated from that link! ENGAGEMENT Social media engagement is simply any interaction you have with other users whether it s likes, comments, or shares! Your followers expect you to interact with them, so engagement is a core part of any social media strategy meaning talking to, messaging, and interacting with others on social networks. Some examples of engagement include commenting on Facebook/Instagram posts and participating in Twitter chats. FLIPAGRAM A tool that allows you to create short, interactive videos with your photos, video clips, + favorite music, then share with your followers on Instagram. FOLLOWER A user who has subscribed to your Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest or Tumblr account. Followers receive your images and/or Tweets in their feed or stream. GEO-TAGGING The practice of tagging a photo, video, or message with a specific location. GPS-enabled smartphones have made geotagging a core aspect of social media, as your post is now searchable by location. Reach new audiences by tagging popular areas and making your post discoverable. Your profile page must be public to enable this feature. HANDLE Another way of saying your account name or username. For example, Origami Owl s handle is @origamiowl. HASHTAG A word or phrase preceded by the # sign. #Hashtags are a simple way to mark the topic (or topics) of social media posts and make them searchable to people with shared interests. LATERGRAM Content you post on Instagram at a later time. Normally used as a hashtag: #latergram. LINK IN BIO At this time, Instagram does not allow users to post links within the comments section, so users push readers to visit their profiles for a link to more information. To encourage users to shop your replicated website, remind them in your post copy that they can find the link to your site in your bio! NETWORK Your network refers to your community of online followers spanning platforms from Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, etc. PERSONAL BRANDING The practice of marketing yourself and your career as a brand. PRIVATE MESSAGE 6
Often abbreviated as PM, this is a direct message sent to a user privately through a social media channel s inbox feature. RE-GRAM Re-posting or sharing someone else s Instagram picture or video. A common app for re-gramming is Repost App, a downloadable app that makes it easy to re-post your favorite photos and videos on Instagram while giving credit to the original poster. If you re not using a re-posting app, simply use the hashtag #regram, followed by the original poster s handle name (example: #regram @origamiowl). You may also wish to tag the original poster in the photo itself. TRENDING TOPICS The most commonly used hashtags at that present time. 7
