THE CLIENT The Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS (formerly Body Positive) was founded in 1990 with the vision of "leading the fight against HIV and AIDS" through its mission of reducing infection, improving quality of life and contributing to worldwide research. Today, hundreds of thousands of people around the world are taking HIV- and AIDSfighting drugs that earned Federal Drug Administration approval, thanks in part to the Center's clinical trials and biomedical research program. The Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS provides these services in a nurturing environment: Leading-edge medical research through the largest privately funded, nonprofit, HIV clinical trials site in the Southwestern United States. Education programs, including group and individual instruction for men, women and youth infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. HIV prevention programs for men, women, youth, and transgender individuals. Wellness services, including nutritional consultants, naturopathic medicine and an on-site vitamin shop. Emotional support for HIV-positive individuals, their friends and families. Family support services, including child watch, family camp and social activities for families living with HIV/AIDS. Community outreach, reaching out to underserved populations and providing connection to HIV services. Governed by a Board of Directors of business and community leaders, Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS has an operating budget of approximately $3 million, a full and part-time staff of 26 and an additional 62 dedicated volunteers. 27% of its funding comes from clinical trials, 13% from events and the remaining 50% from individual gifts and government and foundation grants. Visit www.swhiv.org for more information. 2

THE POSITION The Executive Director will provide executive leadership and direction to achieve the agency s vision, mission, business strategy and annual goals and objectives. S/he will have accountability for all agency operations including fiscal management oversight and responsibility. The Executive Director will lead by example and set clear strategies and performance expectations developed in an environment of participation and collaboration with the Board of Directors. The Executive Director reports to the Executive Board of Directors and directly oversees a four-person Leadership Team that includes the Chief Financial Officer, the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Community Center Outreach and the Director of Research & Wellness. Additional responsibilities are as follows: Assure the agency and its mission, programs, products and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image to the public, stakeholders, Board members, the community, etc. Maintain an innovative approach to agency management exploring and potentially implementing opportunities with the potential of financial or strategic success. Ensure appropriate programs (such as insurance coverage) are in place to protect the agency s assets. Report to, assist and advise the board and its committees on the establishment of agency goals and policies. Promptly implement agency policies and procedures as the agent of the Board and fulfill the requirements of regulatory and legal statuses. In collaboration with agency department heads, recommend yearly budget for Board approval and manage the organization s resources within budgeted guidelines and in accordance with applicable current laws and regulations. Report to the Board regarding the operating results of the agency, comparing monthly operations to Board approved plans and budgets, explaining variations. Establish and evaluate performance objectives for the Leadership Team (direct reports) and encourage continuous training and development among all staff. Drive the development of long-range annual operating and strategic plans. 3

Revise or provide recommendations regarding revisions as needed. Display courtesy and sensitivity in managing challenging customer situations. Solicit and act on customer feedback to improve or enhance overall experience with a steadfast commitment to quality. Exhibit resilience in handling setbacks, resistance and risk. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS is seeking a mature professional with a minimum of 10 years of progressive management experience, leading in a culturally diverse and competitive environment. The Executive Director should be a strong communicator and spokesperson who can represent Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS effectively to the public and therefore must be knowledgeable of interagency work and HIV/AIDS. The candidate must be a proven manager with a demonstrated record of leading and motivating a team of professionals and support staff. The successful candidate must also be a proven fundraiser, ideally in the area of social services. S/he must have a solid understanding of board dynamics and governance in a growing not-for-profit organization. Particular strengths in corporate and individual major gift fundraising are important. As the agency has embarked on a capital campaign to build a new facility with tenant vendors, experience with properties leases would be a plus. An undergraduate degree is required, and a graduate degree in public or business administration, social services or other professionally related field is strongly preferred. Proficiency in MSWord, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint is essential. Understanding of Ryan White and related government funding is necessary. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS The ideal candidate will be a leader who combines stature and presence with a passion for the mission of Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS. The Executive Director will be leading a team of dedicated staff members; our client is therefore seeking a manager who enjoys developing organizational relationships, and who has the ability to foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration. S/he must be respectful of staff and volunteers, and supportive of their dedication and hard work. The Executive Director should be a good listener and an excellent motivator. The ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to work effectively under 4

pressure is important. Familiarity with the Phoenix philanthropic community would be a significant asset, and flexibility to accommodate weekday early/evening work hours and occasional weekend hours, as well as travel within/outside Arizona is essential. COMPENSATION Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS is offering a competitive salary, commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate, and an excellent benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance and an employee contribution retirement plan. The client may be willing to pay basic relocation expenses for the exceptional individual they are seeking.
