#WorkForIt: Resume Tips Contact the Counseling & Career Center for a resume review appointment. Jamestown Campus: (716) 338-1007 Olean Campus: (716) 376-7568 OVERVIEW The purpose of a resume to is to get an interview. It is a marketing tool. It is also a working document that will always be revised as you gain new positions, experience, and education. Put yourself in the reader s shoes! What would you look for if you were only spent 20 30 seconds reading it? Resumes should be professional, visually appealing, and always tailored to the employer. BUILD YOUR RESUME Experience related to the job description, etc. can be demonstrated in a variety of ways internships, clubs, organizations, athletics, campus activities, class projects, clinical experiences, research, volunteer work, etc. It DOES NOT come from just paid employment! Keep a master list of everything you do and are involved in and update it frequently. This makes it easier to decide how to tailor your resume to each job, scholarship, etc. you apply to. New to JCC or new to your field? Focus on transferrable skills when describing experiences. FORMAT Do not use resume templates. They do not know your background, experience or the job. ½ 1 margins. Use size 10-12 font (Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri or similar) for the body of the resume; larger font for your name. Use a list with 5 7 bullet points to describe each experience. Do not write paragraphs. Bullet points should be closed (filled in circles/squares). Bullet points do not go in front of degree, names of businesses or schools, or position titles. Be consistent the same information is listed for all positions (title, company, city/state, dates) in the same order for all experiences. The same information is in bold (title and company, etc), bullet point styles, and font styles are the same throughout the entire resume. Bold important info your contact info, degree titles/college name, position titles, company names. Only include street addresses/zip codes for your contact info. Be organized resume sections listed in order of importance to the employer. Within each section, experiences are listed from the most recent to the oldest. SINGLE space between bullet points for experiences. DOUBLE space between overall sections. 1 page limit in most industries (e.g., Business); however, 2 pages is okay if you have a lot of related experience. For physical copies, print on resume paper with black ink. If the resume is 2 pages, include name/phone number and Page 2 in the header; print single-sided and use a paperclip to hold together. Do not use text boxes or tables. They may appear blank if you submit a resume through an online system. Do not include References available upon request. Do not include an objective statement you will write this in your cover letter. A professional summary is okay. If submitting electronically, save as a separate.pdf file. (Turn over)

DESCRIBE SKILLS & EXPERIENCES Be descriptive! Helped clients learn self-sufficiency skills is vague - Created engaging activities for adults ages 20 45 with economic challenges gives an employer a much better idea of what you ve done and the populations you ve worked with. Describe positions as accomplishments show what you did, not what you were hired to do! Try adding by or through to identify results of your efforts. Example: Increased sales by 10% using effective motivational techniques. Quantify when possible (e.g., Built 1:1 relationships with 175 children ages 6-13 ). Start each bullet point with an Action Verb; Use different actions verbs throughout and do not repeat the same action verbs throughout your resume even if positions are similar. Current experiences are written in the present-tense ( Manage ); past experiences are written in the pasttense ( Managed ). Do not use I My or Mine. Eliminate phrases such as, responsibilities include or duties were. Use language from the job description in bullet points, if possible. Perfection proofread and make sure spelling or grammatical errors do not exist. WHAT TO INCLUDE: What sections you include will depend upon your background/major; you do not have to include all sections suggested if it is not relevant to your experience and background/major. Include what the employer will be most interested in based on the job description and what can set you apart from other applicants. SUGGESTIONS: PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY EDUCATION HONORS/AWARDS CERTIFICATIONS RELATED COURSEWORK RELATED EXPERIENCE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE MILITARY EXPERIENCE OTHER EMPLOYMENT ART EXHIBITIONS LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY LANGUAGES RESEARCH PUBLICATIONS FORMAL PRESENTATIONS CAMPUS ACTIVITIES ATHLETICS EQUIPMENT OPERATIONS PERFORMANCES/ENSEMBLES
