Corporate Volunteering at Sacred Heart Mission Sacred Heart Mission has a long history of effectively assisting the most disadvantaged members of our community to rebuild their lives. Since opening our doors in 1982, the Mission has evolved into an innovative organisation, sustained by a deep pool of generosity and support from the community. Over the years we have developed a reputation as a highly regarded and well-established community social services provider with leading edge expertise in engaging hard-to-reach communities and in addressing the underlying causes of long-term homelessness and disadvantage. We offer services in St Kilda and surrounding areas of Melbourne s inner south-east region, with some services provided in partnership or in collaboration with other agencies. We base our approach on evidence-informed research and provide unconditional practical assistance, with respect and compassion for each individual throughout their entire life journey extending to aged care and end of life. We recognise everybody s journey is unique and we work to provide people with support that is effective and carefully tailored to their individual needs. No matter where they are in their journey, we are here to support them. It all starts with a welcome, a meal, a relationship Click here to view videos about the history of the Mission and the dining hall.
Sacred Heart Mission services
Volunteers Over 1,800 volunteers a year assist the organisation in a range of capacities. Teams of volunteers undertake daily rosters in our dining hall and op shops. Volunteers spend time with our Aged Care residents and Homecare clients offering a helping hand through the 5 Minute volunteer program. Women s House volunteers assist in the preparation and service of meals. Skilled volunteers provide pro bono professional services and expertise such as medical care, business skills, marketing and legal services. Sacred Heart Mission is extremely grateful to our growing team of volunteers who come from many different walks of life to offer their time, skills and expertise. In the 2015/16 financial year, volunteers contributed over 75,000 hours of service to the Sacred Heart Mission community. Without these volunteers, we would not be able to deliver our vital services. Corporate volunteers contribute significantly to our volunteer workforce. Volunteer Opportunities Dining Hall Groups of up to 6 people can volunteer in our Dining hall, helping prepare and serve up to 400 nutritious, three course meals to those in need. During a five hour shift (9am to 2pm), volunteers will undertake a variety of tasks involved with meal preparation and serving. This is undertaken in a professional kitchen, supervised by qualified chefs and volunteer supervisors, ensuring all Occupational Health & Safety and food hygiene standards are met. Volunteering in the dining hall is a popular option for businesses that are looking for a meaningful way to contribute to the community which is both rewarding and enjoyable. Volunteers leave their shift with a better understanding of the issues related to homelessness and disadvantage and knowing that the work they have done has directly helped those in need. Each year, we provide 125,000 free meals to people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. This would not be possible without help from our corporate volunteers. Op Shops Groups of up to 10 people can volunteer in one of our ten op shops across Melbourne. During a five hour shift (10am-3pm) volunteers will assist with customer service, stock management and visual merchandising. The op shops are a fun, vibrant, community-focused retail environment, responsible for raising over 30 per cent of the revenue needed to provide our vital services. Volunteers are supervised by the acting Store Coordinator and work alongside other volunteers and a richly diverse customer-base. Those volunteering in op shops will gain a better understanding of the issues relating to homelessness and disadvantage while having a rich, rewarding experience that can often lead to ongoing volunteering. Skilled Volunteering If your organisation has skills or services you wish to share with the organisation please contact us to discuss.
Financial Contribution Sacred Heart Mission relies on fundraising and social enterprise to fund 70 per cent of our volunteer program costs and 15 per cent of our service delivery. To support us in continuing to deliver our volunteer program, we ask our corporate partners to make a contribution to the cost of running it when they are part of the experience. To cover the costs associated with running our volunteer program we do ask corporate organisations to make a tax deductible donation of $75 per head in the dining hall or $150 (for up to 10 people) in the op shops. This donation goes towards the provision of a professional kitchen, qualified chefs and a volunteer coordinator who will manage the volunteer activity from beginning to end. We are also happy to negotiate a mutually suitable rate should these be a barrier to your engagement. Terms & Conditions All money paid for volunteering with Sacred Heart Mission is non refundable. We will inform volunteering providers of any cancellations 48 hours prior to shifts. In the case that Sacred Heart Mission should cancel for any reason, we will work with the volunteer provider to arrange another suitable date(s). If no reasonable agreement can be made, a refund will be offered. The volunteering provider shall ensure all volunteers allocated for the day arrive at the agreed time and to the best of its ability provide backfill for any volunteer who cannot attend the agreed shift. If this cannot be achieved please notify us of any cancellations 48 hours prior to the shift. It is difficult to fill volunteer shifts at the last minute and it means our ability to provide our service is compromised. All volunteers need to have read the information that is issued by the volunteer office prior to their shift and must adhere to the requirements outlined.
