Your assessor will help you select the units of the different qualifications that best suit your needs and the needs of your employer. PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Health & Social Care Wales Diploma: Unit 1: 2.3, 2.4, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 Unit 74: 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE This activity will enable your assessor to examine your competence by observing you carrying out workplace activities. This will include asking related questions to test your underpinning knowledge. Your assessor will agree when they can visit you at your workplace to observe this activity. a. Supporting an individual communicating with a third person During this activity you must use a range of styles/methods to meet the individual s communication needs. These will be the methods agreed in the individual s care plan and your assessor will expect to see the relevant section of the care plan. You will need to have thought about the setting for the activity and how it will help communication and avoid or overcome potential barriers. You must identify an individual and an activity in which you will be actively involved in helping them communicate with the other person. You will need to get the permission of others involved before the assessor can observe you. As an alternative to your assessor, you may, with your assessor s agreement, arrange for an expert witness to observe and write an account of this observation. The assessor will need to see you adapting your approach in response to the individual and supporting the other person to be understood by the individual and in turn to understand the individual. You must show your ability to clarify misunderstandings. 3 Facilitating communication between an individual and a third party helps to ensure they are properly understood. 41 These sections prepare you for observations, when your assessor will observe you at work during their visits. Your assessor may also ask you questions about what you re doing to check your understanding, so make sure you read through the preparation notes provided in this section. Your assessor will discuss with you which of these sections you should read, depending on which work activities you are going to be carrying out when they next visit you at your workplace. xi

PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION BTEC Apprenticeship Assessment Workbook Level 3 Health & Social Care Wales Diploma: Unit 1: 4.1, 4.2 Unit 9: 2.2, 3.1, 3.2 PROFESSIONAL DISCUSSION Your assessor will conduct a professional discussion with you, which will capture evidence necessary to prove your level of knowledge and understanding of topic areas. Below are some topic areas you will need to consider when preparing for the professional discussion with your assessor. Confidentiality Maintaining records Supporting others in following good practice in record keeping and handling information Your assessor will plan the content of your professional discussion and will advise you to help you to prepare beforehand. The professional discussion may cover more than this section of your Assessment Workbook. Discussion process The discussion process will offer you the opportunity to show that you understand what confidentiality means and how to maintain it in a social care setting. You will describe what you do in practice to maintain confidentiality, securely handle information and support the good practice of others. To prepare for your professional discussion, you should think about how you could answer questions such as the following. In your setting, what does confidentiality mean? What information do you obtain about and from individuals and what, if any, of this should you pass on to anyone else? From whom should you get advice about confidentiality and when might you need to do this? What are the ways in which confidentiality could be jeopardised and what do you do in day-to-day communications to make sure that confidentiality is maintained? Be ready to describe practical examples. What are the issues about others complying with good practice in maintaining records that are up to date, complete, accurate, legible and secure? How do you help them to understand the importance of this and follow good practice? Be ready to give practical examples. 2 31 Your assessor will carry out, and record, professional discussions with you to check your knowledge, understanding and skills. They may combine the professional discussions from more than one section of the Assessment Workbook if they want to discuss several topics at the same time. These sections will help you prepare for discussion when your assessor visits you at your workplace. xii

Assessment criteria statements within a unit of a qualification describing the standards by which your skills or knowledge will be measured. Assessor the person from your training provider who will visit you in your workplace; their role is to support you through your Apprenticeship and to assess your performance and knowledge.
