R E V E R S E O S M O S I S PRINCIPLE OF REVERSE OSMOSIS Due to the globally nowadays increase of impure water, the faster and wider spreading method of modern water treatment industry is the REVERSE OSMOSIS. But what is Reverse Osmosis? REVERSE OSMOSIS OSMOSIS LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION When two solutions of different concentration are separated with a semi-permeable membrane, then pure water passes through the membrane from the lower to the higher concentration solution (osmotic flow). SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION The osmotic flow continues until an equilibrium is settled, where the level of the higher concentration solution settles at a higher than the initial level. The difference between the levels of the two solutions causes the so-called osmotic pressure. SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE REVERSE OSMOSIS LOW CONCENTRATION SOLUTION SEMI-PERMEABLE MEMBRANE OSMOTIC PRESSURE HIGH CONCENTRATION SOLUTION Reversing the process, if an external pressure greater than the osmotic one is applied on the higher concentration solution, pure water is transferred through the membrane towards the lower concentration solution. This process is called Reverse Osmosis. 3

R/O SUPPLEMENTARY EQUIPMENT STANDARD R/O PRETREATMENT EQUIPMENT Chlorination dosing system for the disinfection of the raw water as it enters the feed water storage tank. Turbidity filters for the removal of turbidity and suspended solids from the water to be passed through the membranes, in order to protect membranes from blocking up. De-chlorination for the membranes protection from the oxidation caused by free chlorine. It can be done either by using a sodium metabilsulphite solution dosing system, or by using an active carbon filter. Iron/Manganese removal filters. Antiscalant dosing system for the prevention scaling formation on the membranes that may lead to membranes blocking. ph adjustment using an acid dosing system, whenever required, additionally to the antiscalant for membrane protection against scalings. Microparticle removal to protect both high pressure pump and R/O membranes. For secure and smooth operation of a desalination plant, a suitable pretreatment equipment has to be installed and sufficient antiscalant has to be dosed. The guarantee offered by TEMAK applies ONLY under the above mentioned condition. 8

R E V E R S E O S M O S I S R/O SUPPLEMENTARY EQUIPMENT R/O POST-TREATMENT EQUIPMENT The post-treatment equipment varies according to the product water specifications and is determined according to the application each time. Post-treatment may comprise of: Remineralization filters in order to enrich the product water with calcium and alkalinity. ph adjustment using acid or/and alkaline dosing systems. R/O double pass if the application requires water of extra low conductivity. Disinfection using a chlorination dosing system, or an ultra violet radiation unit, so that the finally produced water is microbiological load free. OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT C.I.P (Clean- in- place) unit for the chemical cleaning of the membranes when it is necessary. The same system can also be used for the automatic rinse of the R/O unit with permeate water when the R/O operation is interrupted. Auxiliary instruments on-line measuring the ph, Redox, free chlorine, conductivity on the most important spots of the process. TDOS Dosing system with continuous control of the dosing rate and the level of the liquid in the storage tank. Recommended in case of accurate dosing required, in certain sensitive process. 9
