Siemens PLM Software NX CAM 10.0.3: Controlling Simulation Tolerances Specifying Chordal and Tilt Tolerance values to improve quality and performance during simulation. Answers for industry.

About NX CAM NX TM CAM software has helped many of the world s leading manufacturers and job shops produce better parts faster. You can also achieve similar benefits by making use of the unique advantages NX CAM offers. This is one of many hands-on demonstrations designed to introduce you to the powerful capabilities in NX CAM 10.0.3. In order to run this demonstration, you will need access to NX CAM 10.0.3. Visit the NX Manufacturing Forum to learn more, ask questions, and share comments about NX CAM. 2

Hands-on Demonstration: Controlling Simulation Tolerances Specifying separate Chordal and Tilt Tolerance values under Manufacturing Preferences allows you to improve both quality and performance during simulation. Prior to this enhancement, only a single value could be entered which was not always suitable for both tolerances. 3

Prerequisites: 1. You will need access to NX CAM 10.0.3 in order to run this demonstration. 2. If you haven t done so already, download and chordal_and_tilt_tolerance.7z. Demo: 1. Open chordal_and_tilt_tolerance.prt in NX. 2. Select Menu Preferences Manufacturing. 3. Select the Geometry tab and expand the In Process Workpiece Tolerances section of the dialog box. Prior to this enhancement, the Chordal Tolerance value controlled both quality and performance. Specifying the Tilt Tolerance allows you to control the performance separately. The default values give the same behavior as the pre-nx10.0.3 Chordal Tolerance default value. 4. Type 0.2500 in the Chordal Tolerance box. This larger value will reduce the simulation quality so that you will be able to see a very clear improvement when you type in a small value. 5. Click OK in the Manufacturing Preferences dialog box. 4

6. In the Operation Navigator, select MULTI_BLADE_ROUGH and click Verify Tool Path in the Ribbon Bar. 7. Select the 3D Dynamic tab and click Play. The simulation quality is fairly poor. By specifying a tighter tolerance for faceting and a looser tolerance for tilting, you can improve both quality and performance. 8. Click OK in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. 9. Select Menu Preferences Manufacturing. 10. Type 0.0100 in the Chordal Tolerance box (this will improve quality) and 0.2000 in the Tilt Tolerance box (this will improve performance). 11. Click OK in the Manufacturing Preferences dialog box. 12. With MULTI_BLADE_ROUGH still selected, click Verify Tool Path in the Ribbon Bar. 5

13. Click Play. The quality and performance of the simulation have been improved. 14. Click OK in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. Customer Defaults determine the default value for Tilt Tolerance. 15. Select File Utilities Customer Defaults. 16. Select Simulation & Visualization under Manufacturing and select the IPW tab. 17. Click Cancel in the Customer Defaults dialog box. 18. Close the part without saving. 6
