ABOUT CORK FLOORING? Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree. The tree, grown predominately in Europe and Where does cork flooring come from and how is it made? North Africa, has a life span ranging from 150-250 years. Cork is harvested using traditional methods that have remained virtually unchanged since the uses of cork were first discovered. Once the tree has reached the correct level of maturity (typically 25 years), the first harvest of cork bark is removed from the tree. The cork is removed by first making an incision using a sharp knife into the bark. After this incision is made, the cork is gently removed from the tree in sections approximately 1 X 3. The cork is then carried to a centralized location in the forest where it is stacked and aged for a period of 3-6 months. This process is repeated every nine years henceforth, at no time affecting the health of the tree.
MANUFACTURING PROCESS Manufacturing methods are designed to minimize the impact on the environment. Cork waste from the manufacturing of other cork products is ground into granules and compressed into blocks. The blocks of cork are heated at varying temperatures, producing shade variations from light to dark. No dyes or stains are used in the manufacturing process. Blocks are cut into tiles, sanded and coated with water-based matte polyurethane or left unfinished. Each tile is inspected by hand to assure the highest quality. GREEN BENEFITS Composed of 100% pre-consumer waste No more than 50% of bark is removed, allowing the cork tree to protect itself using its natural defenses All waste from the manufacturing process is reclaimed and used as fuel for heating the factory or recycled back into other cork products. There is no material waste in the manufacturing process. Can contribute up to three LEED points for recycled content and use of a rapidly renewable resource Cork is harvested using traditional methods that have remained virtually unchanged since the uses of cork were first discovered.
A LIFETIME OF BENEFITS? The beauty of Heirloom cork is also its strength. Cork s unique visual texture is attributed to its cellular What are the lifetime benefits of Heirloom cork flooring? structure, composed of mostly air. This same structure also makes it durable enough to last a lifetime. Cork contributes quiet, warmth and softness to any environment. Low maintenance needs and replacement costs make cork a budget-friendly alternative to traditional hard wood flooring.
A lifetime of quality & beauty. Non-Toxic Because cork is a natural product, it is non-toxic and does not contain odors and chemicals that can cause allergic reactions. Resilience The resilience of cork is due to the unique cellular structure. Because approximately 80% of cork is air, it can recover up to 100% of its original dimension when compressed with pin pointed pressure. Excellent Acoustical Properties Cork is very quiet to walk on, making it an excellent flooring choice in public areas such as libraries and churches. It is an excellent sound insulator, helping to reduce step sound in a room as well as reducing sound transfer between floors. Environmentally Friendly To produce the cork tiles Expanko uses 80-100% pre-consumer waste generated from wine stopper and other cork production. Additionally, waste generated from production is granulated and used to power the manufacturing equipment. Rich Natural Look Expanko products are not covered with vinyl or other finishes which hide the natural beauty of the material. Cork has a unique and natural look that compliments both classic and contemporary designs. 15-Year Commercial/Residential Warranty Expanko Resilient Flooring warrants for a period of fifteen (15) years after installation that its Heirloom Cork Flooring is free from manufacturing defects. Easy Installation & Maintenance Cork can be installed using standard plywood and concrete sub-floors. Damp mopping with a mild detergent is all that is necessary to maintain a cork floor. Cork does not stain easily or require scrubbing or cleaning with harsh chemicals. Fire Rating Fire Test ASTM E648-08: Class I Fire Test ASTM E84-12: Class II Unparalleled Durability The durability of cork can be attributed to the finish, resilience and structure of the cork tiles. The finish that is applied to the surface protects it from moisture, chemicals, dirt and other damaging materials. Many floors remain in service today after more than 80 years of commercial use. Suitable for Both Commercial & Residential Applications Because of the durability of cork, it is ideal for high traffic commercial areas and homes that will provide decades of beautiful living space.
WEAR & TEAR? Resilience is the key to the durability of cork. The ability to recover up to 100% of its original Why is Heirloom ideal flooring for commercial and residential installations? dimension when compressed with pinpointed pressure is due to cork s unique cellular structure. The composition is nearly 80% air, equal to over 2.4 million air-filled cells per cubic inch. This resilient quality also creates a floor that is comfortable to walk on, causing less stress to the back and feet. Expanko further enhances the durability with the application of a matte polyurethane finish. This commercial grade finish holds up exceptionally well, even in high traffic installations. Cork s natural durability combined with its unique style, make it an ideal choice for residential and commercial applications alike.
