Preliminary construction phasing Lackman Road and I- There will be a major reconfiguration of the Lackman Road interchange to better accommodate traffic entering and exiting the freeway system. KDOT worked with local businesses to reduce impacts to truck traffic, specifically during the holiday shopping and shipping season, with no ramp closures permitted between November 1st and December 31st of any year. While GIC was able to significantly reduce the duration of closures at Lackman Road, multiple changes to existing access should be expected throughout construction. Specific closure information will be communicated as it becomes available. K-10 and Ridgeview Road A diverging diamond interchange will be built at K-10 and Ridgeview Road. Work will start this year and must be completed by July 1, 2015. GIC s proposal includes building a new bridge while keeping Ridgeview Road and all of the ramps open to traffic during construction. 2014 Construction Phasing K-10 & Ridgeview Road Interchange WB I- Reconstruction East of I- Eastbound Collector-Distributor Road 2015 Construction Phasing K-10 & Renner Boulevard Interchange EB I- Reconstruction East of I- Eastbound Collector-Distributor Road I- & Lackman Road Interchange South Side I- Reconstruction West of I- 2016 Construction Phasing NB I- Widening I- & 95th Street Interchange I- & Lackman Road Interchange North Side Westbound Collector-Distributor Road I- Reconstruction West of I- K-10 and Renner Boulevard The improvements at Renner Boulevard include reconfiguring the interchange ramps and reconstructing Renner Boulevard with a significant grade change south of K-10. While Renner Boulevard will need to be closed for up to 5 months during construction, GIC was able to reduce the length of acceptable closures to the Renner Boulevard ramps. Construction is anticipated to begin this year with most of the ramp closures during 2015. between Ridgeview Road and Renner Boulevard will be upgraded to two lanes in each direction early in the project to accommodate traffic potentially detouring from K-10. Utility relocations are scheduled to be completed by June 1, 2014, at which time roadway construction will begin. will be constructed while maintaining traffic with very short interim closures and is planned to be completed by January 1, 2015. Lenexa 95th Street and I- A diverging diamond interchange will be built at 95th Street and I- to accommodate the high volumes of left turns onto the highway. The improvements at this location will be extensive and require a full closure of the interchange ramps and 95th Street for up to 6 months. Construction at this location is planned in 2016 and be completed prior to the 2016 holiday season. Specific closure information will be communicated as it becomes available. I- northbound will also be widened. I- Collector/Distributor Roads Eastbound and westbound collector distributor roads will be built and will provide a significant improvement to the weaving problems in this area. Flyover Bridges 2-lane flyover bridges are being built at the east and west interchanges. Reconstruction of I- The improvements include continuing the westerly progression of widening and reconstructing I- to four lanes in each direction, plus auxiliary lanes from U.S. to the K-10 split. I- may be reduced by one lane in each direction for up to 10 days each.
How a diverging diamond works Advantages of the DDI include: Free-flow left turns allow for a two-phase traffic signal. The DDI can accommodate more leftturn movements both onto and off of the highway, thereby improving the efficiency of the interchange. The DDI reduces the total conflict points inherent to a traditional diamond interchange, thereby increasing safety. 10 The DDI shortens the overall traffic signal cycle length, reducing delays and increasing capacity. The DDI reduces the construction cost and construction time by reducing Traffic crosses over at the intersections. the width of the bridge needed to accommodate left turns.
What to expect and how to stay informed With a construction project as large as this one, traffic will be impacted. You can expect to see: Closures of some ramps and local streets for a specified time frame There are several ways to stay informed about traffic impacts and the project: www.jocogateway.com - Traffic closure map with up-to-date information Lane reductions/lane drops - Traffic may be restricted to using fewer lanes Closures overnight(s) or on weekend(s) - Advance notice will be provided Shifting traffic lanes - Lanes may frequently be shifted to accommodate additional construction needs Text messages - Sign up via the website Electronic newsletters - Sign up via the website KC Metro Traffic Alerts KC Scout - www.kcscout.net Twitter - Follow @ KansasCityKDOT Facebook - Johnson County Gateway I- I- K-10 Interchange Study
