International Flight Crew Training Flight Crew Instruction: Selection, Skills and Supply 23-24 September The Annual International Flight Crew Training Conference is a premier event in the Royal Aeronautical Society s annual calendar. The 2015 Conference planned for Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September at the Society s Headquarters in London will address and debate our industry challenges in terms of Flight Crew Instruction and the related subjects of Selection, Skills & Supply. It is forecast that over the next 15 years, our industry faces an unprecedented demand for at least another 500,000 new airline pilots globally due to planned fleet growth and a significant number of inevitable retirements from the age of the baby-boom. In the USA specifically, this situation is likely to be further exacerbated by significant recent regulatory changes in terms of new and more demanding regulations governing pilot licencing requirements for FAR121 operations as well as more stringent flight and duty time limitations. This situation is likely to become progressively more challenging as global economies fully recover back into strong growth phases and demand for air travel develops with increased vigour. Given that many of the instructors needed to train future airline pilots either come from the ranks of active airline pilots, retired airline pilots or aspiring airline pilots the industry may face an even more significant challenge insufficient instructors of the right stuff to support these anticipated fleet growth plans. Perhaps a genuine situation of which comes first - the chicken or the egg? This particular challenge needs to be considered carefully, with solutions found, if the demand for airline pilot training and the required number of new and appropriately skilled airline pilot graduates is to be achieved in a timely manner. The 2015 conference, will firstly consider the dynamic of the situation that we face as an industry and then evaluate how the role of instructor can be encouraged proactively such that we have sufficient talent from which to select the best instructors with the right skills to enable the supply of new pilots to meet the anticipated demand. Each stage of flight crew instruction will be considered from ab initio cadet pilot training through to type training as well as the training of experienced pilots into command roles, training responsibilities and beyond. Recognising that the aircraft manufacturers as well as airlines also have a vested interest in this pilot supply being supported, the conference will also look at how the OEMs are uniquely addressing the issue. 4
