Agricultural Sector Strategic Objectives Effctive and sustainable management of agricultural resources throughout the Palestine Sustainable use, increasing the area, and sustainable use of agricultural biodiversity: This policy aims to increase and green the area of agricultural land as well as to construct agricultural roads in order to protect land against erosion or deterioration and protect wildlife and agricultural biodiversity. This policy will brought about by implementing the following interventions: Identify, classify and reclaim lands and enhance productivity Afforest government and privately owned land Develop and rehabilitate rangelands Conserve and sustainably use agricultural biodiversity

Forests in Palestinian Territories * The total area of West Bank and Gaza Strip is approximately 6000km2. * The total area classified as forests area is 320km2. * The forest area decreased from 320 km2 in 1970 to 100 km2 in 2008. * The forest area was representing 5% of the total Palestinian lands and decreased to 1.5% in 2008.

The Area of planted forests in Palestine(dense forests) is about 100 km2.

The area of natural forests in Palestine is about 60km2.

The Area of forests replaced by settlements in Palestine is about 160 km2.

Forests and Palestinian Policy The forests sub sector is one of the most important sub sectors that is belong to the agricultural sector. The greening of Palestine program, including the forestry sub sector is one of the important priorities to the leadership policy in Palestine and is considered one of the priorities to the Ministry of Agriculture

Forests and Palestinian Policy President of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian Cabinet are financing all greening activities carried out in the Palestinian, and all the greening activities both fruit trees and forestation activities are financed from the budget of the Palestinian Cabinet.

Greening of Palestine This program is divided into two parts: 1.Distribution of fruit trees seedlings. 2.Distribution and planting forest and rangeland seedlings.

Financing Forestation financing is divided into: 1.Seedling production. 2.Seedlings planting and maintenance of new plantings. 3.Maintenance of old forests.

Distributed seedlings through MOA (2009 2011) Distributed forests and rangeland seedlings Distributed fruit trees seedlings

Five nurseries belong to the Ministry of Agriculture in Palestine. Production capacity is more than 500 thousands forest and rangeland seedling yearly.

* Yearly forestation area is a bout 5000 dunum. * 3000 dunum by MOA. 2000 dunum by other governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Palestinian Monetary Authority

Obstacles facing forests in Palestine

Limited Budgets: No regional cooperation. No international cooperation

land confiscation by the occupation authorities for building settlements, military training and military closed areas.

Pumping of settlements wastewater and water resulting from the factories to the forests and natural reserves

Not allow the Israeli forces from establishment of new forests in C areas.

Separation Wall

The deterioration in economic conditions and the subsequent rise in levels of unemployment have led many Palestinians to exploit forests, woodlands to obtain wood for domestic use or sale.

Goals of Forestry in Palestine * It provides habitat to wildlife. * Biodiversity conservation. * Environment. * Control the soil erosion and improve water quality.
