Business Intelligence Systems Manager Job description Location: Responsible to: Responsible for: Salary: Working Hours: Contract: Holiday: Equal opportunities: MSC s London Office Head of IT None currently Competitive salary commensurate with pay level. The MSC offers a contributory pension scheme (employer s contribution 9%, employee s contribution 6%) and a Death in Service insurance benefit equal to four times annual salary. Employees are entitled to join Tier 2 of the pension scheme on satisfactory completion of their probation period. 35 hours a week, usually 9.00am to 5.00pm with 1 hour, unpaid, for lunch. Flexible hours may be needed as the MSC works across different time zones, but generally work will be carried out during normal office hours. Permanent contract with a notice period of three months in writing on either side. Probationary period six months. 25 days per annum, or prorated equivalent, plus statutory holidays. There is a discretionary carry-over entitlement of five days per annum. The MSC strives to be an equal opportunities employer and commitment to this process is expected. A. JOB SUMMARY The MSC collects an increasing amount of data from the third party audit of our Fisheries and Chain of Custody Standards; the MSC also collects data through the licensing of its Ecolabel. This data is used to assess adherence to its standards and logo licence rules but we also retain and use this data for business intelligence purposes: examples of this include tracking the growth of MSC products in our markets of operation, analysing areas of the Standards that produce issues, and evidencing our impact as a mission based organisation. This role is responsible for the management and development of the MSC data warehouse including supporting the development of all forms of reporting, dashboards and portals. As a technical role reporting to the Head of IT, the post holder is expected to have expertise in database systems and scripting at the development level. The MSC data warehouse and all reporting outputs are built using Microsoft BI tools with data sourced from several primary application systems and other non-transactional data sources. This role working with an external MS Gold Partner in BI has full design authority over the BI architecture and manages the development of the warehouse, all portals and incorporation of all additional data sets. The role is also responsible for the development of all forms of digital data exchange between the warehouse and the MSC (or 3 rd party) web sites; other 3 rd party warehouses etc. The postholder will be familiar with good practices around data modelling, data quality, data usage, data security, data visualisation and supporting effective data exploitation in and out of the MSC. Finally, this role has an additional responsibility in respect of supporting other data related activities outside the BI space (for example supporting the data orientated work packages for a CRM project). B. RESPONSIBILITIES The Business Intelligence Systems Manager is responsible for the management and development of the business intelligence systems in the MSC. These Microsoft systems comprise databases, reporting portals, scripts and code that need to function both on-premises and in the Microsoft cloud. It incorporates the MSC Data Warehouse and all organisational dashboards, reports, portals and other forms of persistent reporting or predictive intelligence in the MSC. The BI Systems Manager works closely with source operational (transactional) applications systems, publishing (web) systems in terms of systemising/automating data exchange and is also the internal product owner for the newly proposed CRM. This role will be the MSCs primary technical expert in the BI systems field and is expected to be knowledgeable in terms of systems integration, data visualisation and staff use of data. This IT role works to the needs of the MSC as a business and within the constraints of our policies on data, security and publishing. This role will enable and support the following: Page 2

internal data managers or external data owners (experts and decision makers on either the source data being input or the intelligence/analysis being output) product owners or digital project managers (people who manage other systems stems that supply data to the warehouse or that receive outputs from the warehouse e.g. website) 3 rd parties that either supply, receive or exchange data with the MSC data Hub, such as ASC, ASI and others BI technology suppliers and consultants. To achieve this objective, the post holder will have the following responsibilities: MSC Portals, Dashboards and Report Development Responsible for the production and delivery of on-line, persistent information outputs such as portals, dashboards and data reports either internally or externally. Support data managers to ensure presentation, user experience, interpretation and security considerations are addressed. Manage a backlog of requests and needs specified by business owners for subsequent development work; either delivering backlog work directly or supporting work delivered by external consultants or other technical roles in the MSC. Developing cubes, reports, analysis and other data outputs on the Microsoft platform. Warehouse Development Responsible for technology and data architecture, configuring tools, and writing and implementing code for the data warehouse. Partner with suppliers to help build and develop the warehouse. Design and maintenance of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) systems and management of testing, quality assurance and data integrity issues. Documenting code development and data models. Promote best practice for other internal technical and data staff, collaborating with external parties or 3 rd parties for source data or expertise. Data Systems Development Lead key data systems projects, such as the MSC Data Hub Project. Undertake data integration work (such as website integration with the MSC data hub or CRM integration work). Support or develop MSC data services (such as product and supplier finder and track a fishery data services). Work with 3 rd parties such as ASC, ASI and others in support of data exchange through XML of other methods. Product Owner/Lead Data Hub Act as the product owner for the data hub (define a roadmap for development, and maintain a backlog register etc.). Act as the lead on master data management and operational responsibility for MDM when developed. Data Training Manage the development of all training materials for the MSC Data Hub. Page 3

Deliver training internally to MSC staff. Other Duties Support the Head of IT in strategy formulation, architecture, data governance, continuous improvements and other areas as required. C. PERSON SPECIFICATION Technical/Specialist Excellent knowledge of T-SQL including views, stored procedures, window functions and Common Table Expressions. Understands BI process and practices from initial sourcing to end user discovery and all steps in between; able to discuss data as a strategic asset as well as a database entity. Knowledge of Microsoft BI Stack: SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) to develop and deploy ETL processes; SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) to develop and deploy tabular models; SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Power BI to develop and deploy dashboards and reports. Knowledge of data exchange standards such as XML; data exchange services such as web methods and master data management. Knowledge of data management and data hub best practices, data models, data entities and relationships and master data management. Knowledge of source controls systems, preferably GitHub and TFS along with best practices in code management and documentation. Good knowledge of data hub landscape and approaches taken by other similar organisations and trends in data visualisation, openness and transparency. Ability to learn new systems and languages quickly to spin up solutions, where needed. A relevant degree would be an advantage. Familiar with agile project discipline and able to engage in agile projects as a developer resource and product owner Able to perform some project manager functions such as engagement with stakeholders (report sponsors, data owners), tracking expenditure and costs and managing cross-project dependencies. Technical Leadership/Management Experience of managing or playing a key role in enterprise data projects (eg BI or any project that has substantial levels of data, analysis and reporting). Experience of managing BI suppliers and engaging with them on a waterfall, blended or agile basis. Experience of providing a reporting service and/or providing enterprise strategic reporting tools to monitor progress against organisational KPIs. Experience of requirements gathering for reports, dashboards, portals, data services, integrations or data exchange: managing a backlog as well as development, testing and release processes. Ability to deliver projects in line with current expectations through effective influencing, scope clarification, effective decision making and engagement with Steering Committees and Project Boards. Communication and Relationship Skills Ability to influence business owners and establish trust. Page 4

Able to build credibility and be seen as a trusted internal supplier of MSC and 3 rd party digital data assets. Able to align and fit data hub roadmap into wider strategic context and engage effectively with internal project and external governance bodies. Ability to collaborate effectively with key stakeholders such as any Head of BI, data owners, 3 rd party data sources or publishers, MSC data analyst/insight staff. Supportive outlook able to understand and help business staff articulate needs Service and customer orientated able to manage demand, customer expectations and deliver quality outcomes. Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate complex issues in a clear manner to a diverse range of audiences. Demonstrated excellence in spoken and written communications in English essential; a relevant second language would be an advantage, but is not essential. Able to prototype, mockup and design data portals, dashboards etc. (e.g. visualisation and information design) to communicate information and intelligence effectively to the consumer/end user.
