Social Media 101 So, what is social media? Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. 5
Social Media 101 What are the most popular social media sites? Facebook is a social networking website that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. Originally designed for college students, Facebook was created in 2004. By 2006, anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today, Facebook is the world's largest social network, with more than 1.5 billion users worldwide. 6
Social Media 101 What are the most popular social media sites? Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". Registered users can read and post tweets, but those who are unregistered can only read them. 7

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well as through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. 8
Social Media 101 What are the most popular social media sites? LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking service. Founded in December 2002 and launched on May 5, 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. 9

Using Social Media > Why use it? Keeping in touch Social media is a remarkable tool for keeping in touch with kids, grandkids, but it s more than just family. Some folks are finding their college roommates, best friends from the block and elementary school crushes. The social networks enable us to view videos, read blog posts, share pictures and have conversations with people who we thought we d never see again. To say social media has revolutionized the way families connect is an understatement. 11
Using Social Media > Why use it? Research People use social media tools to learn more about topics that interest them. In some cases it can lead them to cultivate hobbies and business ideas, and in other cases, such as with all the inaccurate health information available, it can be a confusing mix of resources. However, the social media tools are enabling folks to learn more about new products and learn something new. 12
Using Social Media > Why use it? Entertainment You can watch old television shows and movies, as well as find videos from back in the day. You can read ebooks, articles and blog posts, find song lyrics and find out what their favorite entertainers are up to. You can play games, either by yourselves or with family and friends. Those who can t get out and around no longer have to feel lonely when they re home alone. 13
Using Social Media > Why use it? Learning Just because one is out of school doesn t necessarily mean one wants to stop learning. People are now taking courses online and reading online books, posts, articles and more to keep sharp. Older adults are now better able to keep up with emerging technologies, they don t have to be considered old and out of touch and can hold their own in a conversation. 14
Using Social Media > Why use it? Sharing We all have unique perspectives on life. Our experiences have shaped us. We all have amazing stories and ideas. Through social media they can share all that good stuff with others. You can network online and offer advice and mentoring to younger people and students. 15
Using Social Media > Why use it? Shopping By following your favorite businesses and brands, you can save money by taking advantage of promotional opportunities. Many times freebies and discounts are only available via a Facebook page or for Twitter followers. 16

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Member engagement Many folks get many emails throughout the day, that the one Kiwanis email that comes from the Club President might get lost in the shuffle. On Facebook, your club can post events and alerts members about upcoming activities. Facebook is also a great way for members who can t make your regular meetings to feel apart of your club by reading updates. 18
Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Sharing Kiwanis Facebook and Twitter are a great way to publicize your club s event with folks in your community. At your meetings, ask your members to check-in to your meeting location and say something positive about Kiwanis. Sharing your club s Facebook status takes about two seconds, but can make a strong impression on folks outside your club. 19
Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Club Recognition Admit it. We all like to be recognized for a job well done. Social media allows your club leadership to call out members to a wide and diverse audience for making a difference in their community. Think of Facebook and Twitter as your club s bullhorn. 20

Facebook and Twitter are great ways to share the news of a new member joining your club. It makes people feel special that they are valued and welcomed by their new Kiwanis club. 22
