Using Social Media > Why use it? Keeping in touch Social media is a remarkable tool for keeping in touch with kids, grandkids, but it s more than just family. Some folks are finding their college roommates, best friends from the block and elementary school crushes. The social networks enable us to view videos, read blog posts, share pictures and have conversations with people who we thought we d never see again. To say social media has revolutionized the way families connect is an understatement. 11

Using Social Media > Why use it? Research People use social media tools to learn more about topics that interest them. In some cases it can lead them to cultivate hobbies and business ideas, and in other cases, such as with all the inaccurate health information available, it can be a confusing mix of resources. However, the social media tools are enabling folks to learn more about new products and learn something new. 12

Using Social Media > Why use it? Entertainment You can watch old television shows and movies, as well as find videos from back in the day. You can read ebooks, articles and blog posts, find song lyrics and find out what their favorite entertainers are up to. You can play games, either by yourselves or with family and friends. Those who can t get out and around no longer have to feel lonely when they re home alone. 13

Using Social Media > Why use it? Learning Just because one is out of school doesn t necessarily mean one wants to stop learning. People are now taking courses online and reading online books, posts, articles and more to keep sharp. Older adults are now better able to keep up with emerging technologies, they don t have to be considered old and out of touch and can hold their own in a conversation. 14

Using Social Media > Why use it? Sharing We all have unique perspectives on life. Our experiences have shaped us. We all have amazing stories and ideas. Through social media they can share all that good stuff with others. You can network online and offer advice and mentoring to younger people and students. 15

Using Social Media > Why use it? Shopping By following your favorite businesses and brands, you can save money by taking advantage of promotional opportunities. Many times freebies and discounts are only available via a Facebook page or for Twitter followers. 16

Click to edit Master title style Why should my Kiwanis Club use social media? 17

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Member engagement Many folks get many emails throughout the day, that the one Kiwanis email that comes from the Club President might get lost in the shuffle. On Facebook, your club can post events and alerts members about upcoming activities. Facebook is also a great way for members who can t make your regular meetings to feel apart of your club by reading updates. 18

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Sharing Kiwanis Facebook and Twitter are a great way to publicize your club s event with folks in your community. At your meetings, ask your members to check-in to your meeting location and say something positive about Kiwanis. Sharing your club s Facebook status takes about two seconds, but can make a strong impression on folks outside your club. 19

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Club Recognition Admit it. We all like to be recognized for a job well done. Social media allows your club leadership to call out members to a wide and diverse audience for making a difference in their community. Think of Facebook and Twitter as your club s bullhorn. 20

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media Sharing photos and videos The old saying that a picture is worth a 1,000 words is true even in today s world. Pictures from your club s latest service project tell the world that there are still people making a difference! So share it! 21

Your Kiwanis Club Using Social Media New member engagement We mentioned member engagement earlier, but what about new members? Facebook and Twitter are great ways to share the news of a new member joining your club. It makes people feel special that they are valued and welcomed by their new Kiwanis club. 22
