krones Contiroll Decoration possibilities Whether on glass, plastic or metal containers, the wrap-around label offers more space for all kinds of advertising and consumer information. The Contiroll automatically applies wrap-around labels to round, oval, rectangular, square and polygon containers. It is capable of handling low-cost label papers as well as a wide range of film labels. Reverseprinted transparent film labels are processed with the same precision as coloured film labels. As part of krones modular component system the Contiroll can also be equipped with additional labelling stations. With the Contiroll, creative labelling is limited only by imagination. The krones Contiroll provides highly marketable, appealing labelling possibilities to a wide range of industries: from beverages and food, all the way to cosmetics and chemicals.

Wrap-around labelling with hotmelt or cold glue Contiroll with ergonomicallydesigned lift-up guarding Special requirements demand special solutions, especially with reel-fed labelling. The Contiroll was designed as a rotary-type labelling machine and is equipped with an extremely precise labelling station, which cuts the labels and applies them to the container. A computer-controlled feed roller and rotating cutters provide a clean and accurate cut. Depending on the label material, hotmelt or cold glue can be used as adhesive. A variety of machine sizes and versions enable the Contiroll to handle outputs ranging from 3,000 to 72,000 containers per hour. The machine was designed ergonomically, is easy to operate and maintain. More than one thousand machines installed worldwide are proof of the reliability of this labelling system. krones Contiroll Principle of operation The Contiroll is a continuous-motion machine that automatically adjusts to the inflow and outflow of containers. Containers arriving on the infeed conveyor are taken up by the infeed worm, spaced to pitch so that they can then be taken up by the infeed starwheel and transferred to the container table. The container rotation begins when they are positioned between container plates and centring bells. The speed of the feed roller is adjusted to the required label length, ensuring continuous web tension. A standard threading unit ensures optimal film feed. Computer and servomotor controls guarantee label cut-off at the right position while a rotating cutter drum equipped with a separate heating unit provides an exact cut. Two narrow strips of hotmelt, applied by a heated glue roller to the leading and trailing edges, keep glue consumption to a minimum. The hotmelt strip applied to the leading label edge ensures a precise and positive transfer onto the container. As the container is rotated during label transfer, labels are applied smoothly and tightly. Gluing 2 3 Leading and trailing edge gluing with hotmelt This standard Contiroll gluing method minimises glue consumption as only a narrow strip of glue is applied to the leading and trailing edges. A large glue bowl ensures an ample glue supply. krones Contiroll Labelling station The labelling station of the Contiroll is controlled by a servomotor. It incorporates a label feed roller with cutcontrol, cutting unit, gluing station and a vacuum-assisted gripper cylinder for label transfer. Large-capacity label reels minimise the operator workload significantly. Container table Container rotation via servomotor and toothed belts for round containers The Contiroll is equipped with the same bottle table in spoked-wheel design that has proven its effectiveness on all other KRONES rotarytype labellers. Depending on the requirements, up to 32 container plates can be installed. When round containers are to be processed, the plates are driven by a servomotor via toothed belts. In case of container diameter changes the speed of the belt can easily be adjusted via a touch-screen. The bottle plates are designed to fit the container base; when a new container is to be processed the plates can be exchanged without tools. Exchangeable cam segment for processing special-shaped containers for special-shaped containers In addition to exact centring, the labelling of special-shaped containers demands container-specific control of the centring plate rotation to guarantee proper label placement. To ensure absolute precision, bottle plates with turnstiles and exchangeable cam segments have been employed. for special decorations For special labelling processes the containers have to be aligned e.g. with the can seam or glass seal to provide accurate label positioning. KRONES has developed a container table especially for these decorations. The individual bottle plates are rotated by a computer-controlled servomotor. The containers are photoelectrically positioned and placed at the correct labelling position by additional rotation. Container rotation via the bottle plates and a servomotor 7

krones Contiroll Operation and installation 1 2 Operation A large, high-contrast colour display with touch-screen enables easy and convenient operation. During operation, the current production data such as container and label type, machine speed and operating hours, is constantly displayed and can easily transmitted via an interface to the line data storage system (LDS) or a printer. All malfunctions are displayed as plain text graph in the selected language. Access to important production settings is protected by a code and only permitted to authorised personnel. The labelling station is operated via an additional LC display (LCT 3) with clearly structured keyboard. Reel exchange and changeover DW-d21-P179-0 11/02 DW-d21-P180-0 11/02 Manual splicing at reel changeover When changing label reels, the operator joins the end of the first reel to the beginning of the new reel, thus eliminating the need to thread the label web into the machine at each changeover. A cutting table is mounted at the labelling station to facilitate this task. Automatic splicing at reel change over With an additional unit the reel changeover can be effected fully automatically. The end of the first reel is spliced to the beginning of a new reel without a machine stop. Changeover The Contiroll can easily be changed over to different containers or label types. First the new type is selected via the touch-screen. When a label is to be processed for the first time all labelling parameters can be programmed and stored in the menu-assisted LCT 3. In case of labelling height changes the entire labelling station can be adjusted vertically and a slide enables horizontal adjustment in case of container diameter changes. The station is adjusted via a crank equipped with a digital counter to enable precise repetition of all settings. Thanks to a patented system with indexed stops, container guide rails can also be quickly adjusted with relation to the infeed worm to accommodate different container diameters. All components of a set of handling parts are coded with colours and numbers; the quick-releases for the starwheels and centre guides are captive-type. The machine is electronically height-adjustable and locked automatically. Centring bells and container plates are equipped with single-hand fasteners. As a result, changeover times are reduced significantly. 9

krones Contiroll Additional equipment The krones Contiroll can additionally be equipped for special labelling requirements. This additional equipment for the Contiroll is as individual as the customer s decorations. Stabilisation Soft containers can be stabilised with compressed air from specially designed centring bells before filling. Stabilisation of the container with compressed air Clamping starwheel Clamping starwheels can be used as infeed and discharge starwheels with major advantages. A centre guide assembly is not required and the starwheels do not have to be exchanged unless the container diameters differ by more than 20 mm. Clamping starwheels enable the rejection of containers that were rejected during the automatic label inspection. Clamping starwheels at infeed and discharge Shrink-fitting Shrink-sleeves, which are to be applied to the round or recessed sections of the container, can be shrunk to fit the container contour by a controlled hot-air fan. Labelling station for self-adhesive labels Thanks to the krones modular components system the Contiroll can additionally be equipped with an AUTOCOL label applicator for selfadhesive labels. Labels for tamperevident sealing or similar purposes can be accurately placed. This system can be installed as an additional station above the infeed or discharge of the Contiroll. krones Garantomat for the application of shrink-sleeves as tamper-evident seal Back-up pressure reduction in a special container infeed Photoelectric label control with a krones Checkmat Back-up pressure reduction For processing special-shaped containers and unstable plastic containers a back-up pressure reduction station and a disengageable worm can be installed at machine infeed. This guarantees smooth feed of the containers to the labeller. Inspection with the krones Checkmat Faulty labelled containers can be prevented from entering the product flow by installing a krones Checkmat for photoelectric label inspection. This module also checks the fill level and container closures. Faulty containers can easily be rejected via a retaining starwheel, clamping starwheel or a pusher. 11
