New Frontiers for Hot Finished Hollow Sections Cologne 30/09/2015
Arvedi Group Arvedi Group produces over 3.5 million tpy of steel products, has a turnover of 2.5 Bln and more than 2500 employees. Carbon Steel Stainless steel
Carbon steel hot rolled Coils, Pickled and Galvanized Production Capacity: 3.000.000 tpy Annual Turnover: 1700 million 1.340 Employees Surface Area: 750.000 m 2 The wide production range includes: Advanced high strength steels (multi-phase steels) Thin Gauges Close Tolerances Short Time-To-Market Hot-rolled and pickled range: Widths: 1250 mm 1570 mm Thicknesses: 0.8 mm - 12 mm Galvanized range: Widths: 1250 mm - 1570 mm Thicknesses: 0.25 mm - 4 mm
Established in 1973, ATA is the division which produces welded carbon steel tubes. Production Capacity: over 500.000 tpy Annual Turnover: 400 millions 474 Employees Surface Area: 208.700 m 2 Main segments: 1. Special (automotive, mechanical, metalworking and precision purposes); 2. Structural (civil engineering and foundation); 3. Energy (gas pipe, line pipe, OCTG and boiler tubes).
Product Diversification ATA is the only Italian company, and one of the few in Europe, having a Hot-Stretch Reducing Mill (LC). After welding, tubes go through an induction furnace for heating and are then hot rolled (hot stretch reduced). The result of this rolling process is a tube with uniformity and homogeneity between the weld area and tube body. This allows hot-stretch tubes produced by ATA to replace seamless in several applications.
Innovation strategy The EU Steel Tube Market is nowadays characterized by: Over production capacity Considerable impact of competition from non-eu countries Increased operating costs & weak industry profitability Low production margins Lack of visibility When market conditions become tough and unpredictable, business plan needs to be revised, as previous targets might not be achievable. HOW TO REACT? Using our own resources in a most effective and most innovative way
Sustainable Innovation What advantages investing in new plants and technologies? 1 INCREASED PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY Lower investments and lower processing costs 2 COST REDUCTION Lower energy consumption, lower costs for consumables Indirect costs benefit from the higher productivity 3 IMPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE Lower direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse and noxious gases Lower water consumption Compatibility to the steelmaking activity with respect for all social and environmental contexts
Sustainable Innovation In July 2009 ATA started the production of the new 12 inch SMS welding line, enabling the company to extend its manufacturing range and obtaining significant advantages in terms of: Minimized Changing Times Superior Quality High Flexibility Challanging Products High Production Speed Precise Cutting-To-Lenght

Hot Finished Tube EN 10210
New added-value products Hot Finished Tube EN 10210 Hot finished hollow sections ensure higher deformation possibilities and are suitable for uses subject to dynamic forces.
Why a welded hot finished tube? Compared to a «seamless» tube: Higher precision characteristics; Better tolerances on diameter, because cold calibrated; Better tolerances on thickness, because reduction on a welded tube; Better tolerances on weight; More limited eccentricity, because reduction on a welded tube; Smoother external surface status and better internal surface polygonality. Compared to an «as welded» tube: Higher & more homogeneous mechanical properties on the whole tube length (no heat affected zone); Stronger resistance to fatigue; Higher deformability without risk of breaks.
Why a welded hot finished tube? NO heat affected zone (the welding area is annealed). Same structure/hardness: no differences between welding zone and the raw material. Same hardness: no differences between corners and side raw material. NO hardening, tensioning and residual stress originated by the forming (in particular on the corners) or by the welding. The steel on the whole tube section is led back to the original status of the rolled strip: Elongation Example: A (strip) = 40% A (tube) = 40% Yield strength Example: Rs/R (strip) ~ 60% Rs/R (tube) ~ 60% Both elongation and yield strength of hot finished tubes are the same as the ones given by the base hot rolled strip.
The PLUS of LEONARDO Certified and marked according to norm EN 10210-1 of Hot Finished Tubes for Structural Purposes Smooth and homogeneus surface. Without trace of calamine. Low superficial roughness The surface is more suitable for further surface threatments: it s basically ready to be varnished. The radius of the corners with homogen wall thickness on the whole section and lenghts. The main plus is compared to Seamless that typically suffer with overmaterial on the corners. Reduced at minimum the range of mechanical properties Product can be customized upon request in terms of lenght, steel grade, dimensional (imperial size), non- standard requirements and marking Reduced lead time, 4-6 wks from PO issuance also for not available items Leonardo tube can satisfy the surface conditions as per norm EN 10163-3: 2004,. class D, subclass 3

Further Developments Product Development Currently in progress the evaluation and testing the increase of dimensional range until (i.e. 300x400mm RHS, SHS 300x300mm). Higher steel grades are countiously have been succesfully tested (i.e. S460NH), approved and going in production with mechanical ReH min. 460MPa, Rm 540-720 MPa at. 40J a -20 C.
