I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 0 Social Media: Pinterest

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 1 What is Pinterest? Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social networking websites today. While other social networks like Facebook and Twitter focus on personal sharing and status updates, Pinterest is all about collecting and sharing the different things you find on the web. As of August 10, 2012, Pinterest was opened to everyone without a request or requiring an invitation. Additionally, the Pinterest app for Android and ipad was launched a few months earlier on April 14, 2012. There is also an app for the iphone. Pinterest's Popularity Since its introduction in 2010, Pinterest has quickly become the third-most popular social networking site in the world, behind only Facebook and Twitter. It's easy to start using Pinterest and make pinboards of your own. Pinterest appeals to a wide variety of different people, which is one of the main reasons for its growing popularity. Whether you're looking to stay more organized, create a board of interesting things, or even draw attention to your business, there's almost no limit to what you can do with Pinterest. Who uses Pinterest? Brides: Many brides-to-be have replaced bulky three-ring binder wedding planners with the simplicity and portability of a Pinterest account. Home Décor: Some people create a Board for each room in the house and then pin decorating ideas for that room.

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 2 Art: Artists use it to organize inspiring images for their work. Recipes: Cooks keep an online recipe box. College students might create a shopping list of things they need to buy for school. DIY: DIY-ers can bookmark tutorials for those rainy day projects. Pinterest by the Numbers Women account for about 65% of Pinterest's users worldwide, but the percentage of male users is rising. Strong Pinterest activity comes from Alabama, Tennessee, and Utah. Pinterest sees more than 11 million unique visitors every month, according to ComScore. People in the Unites States are 70% more likely to buy an item they find through Pinterest than if they found it on a company's website, according to Shopify. Signing Up For Pinterest To sign up for Pinterest, go to www.pinterest.com, and select the button "Join Pinterest" at the top of the page. You can register via Facebook, Twitter, or an e-mail address. Signing up via Facebook: You will need to sign into your Facebook account and authorize the Pinterest app to access your Facebook account. You can revoke the authorization at any time in your Facebook privacy/app settings. Signing up via Twitter: You will need to sign in and authorize the Pinterest app to access your Twitter account. You can revoke the authorization any time in your settings.

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 3 Signing up via an email: 1. Choose a username, and provide a valid email address. Then choose a password, and fill out the rest of the information needed to set up your account. 2. When you re done, click on Create Account. 3. You will be asked to follow 5 boards from different topics to get you started. Choose boards that interest you from different topics, not just one. Remember, these boards are from Pinterest users, so whatever they pin into these boards will appear on your home page. 4. After you choose your five boards, you will see them on your home page. How to use Pinterest Think of Pinterest as a digital bulletin board or scrapbook for collecting the things you find online or from other Pinterest users. For example, if you find a new recipes you like on the Web or see it from another user s pin, you can save it for future reference in one of your boards. This way, you won t have to print out every recipe you find or bookmark links to the recipes. You can have them all in one place, in one board. The pin is then displayed as a picture on a pinboard. Clicking a pin will link you back to the picture's original website. But Pinterest isn't just about creating your own pinboards. Pinterest also allows you to follow the pins saved by your friends and other users, or pinners as they're called on Pinterest. Whether you're looking to find what's new or discover the latest trends, following pins is an easy way to explore what's happening on Pinterest. Whenever you're browsing Pinterest, you can easily save, or repin, pins that you discover to your own pinboards. Repinning actually accounts for more than 80% of the pins that appear on Pinterest. Some pins are even repinned thousands of times. Simply put, people just love sharing and repinning on Pinterest.

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 4 When you open a new Pinterest account, you will be provided with four templates for your boards and three templates for your secret boards. (Your secret boards are boards that are private. They are only visible and accessible to you and those you invite to collaborate.) You can customize these. Note: Boards can have multiple contributors, so collaborating with coworkers, friends, colleagues, and others on a project is easy with everyone s ideas and inspiration in one place. Pinning Items To add to those boards, you can pin things from other Pinterest users. Hover your mouse over the object and choose Repin. A window will appear, and you can choose the board in which your pin will be stored and any comments you want to add. If there is not a board available, you can create a board at this point. You can also pin something from a website, using the web address or upload it from your computer or portable hard drive. From URL

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 5 Websites will have an automatic link attached to it, so that when Pinterest users click on that pin from the enlarged mode, that page will open, usually in a separate tab. You can also place a Pin It button on your bookmarks bar on your browser that lets you grab an image from a website and pin it to one of your boards. *Note: Not all websites have pinnable images. Instructions on how to add the Pin It button is located in the About menu. The directions vary according to the browser you are using; however, you can easily drag the button to the favorites/bookmarks bar of your browser. When you hover your mouse over a picture, it gives these options. You can add a pin or board. You can adjust settings.

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 6 The Pinterest Profile and Privacy Settings Once you create a Pinterest account, you may want to add a bit of detail to your profile page. It's important to remember that the information on your profile page is public, so you shouldn't share too much personal information. You can also modify your privacy settings if you wish to disconnect your Facebook or Twitter account from Pinterest. To Modify Your Profile and Privacy Settings: 1. Click the profile icon in the top-right corner of the page. 2. Your profile page will appear, which displays your public information and pinboards. You can add and arrange the order of your boards in this mode. 3. Click your profile button, and a drop down menu will appear. 4. Click Settings. The profile settings page will appear. At the top of the page you can modify your public profile, like your username, location, and bio. Your profile picture will be imported automatically from Facebook or Twitter. You can upload a different image from your computer if you prefer. 5. Scroll down to modify your privacy settings. Switch the Prevent search engines from including your profile in their search results button to the On position to prevent sites like Google or Bing from indexing your Pinterest profile. 6. If you'd like to disconnect your Facebook account from Pinterest, switch the Login with Facebook button to the Off position. The same can be done for Twitter. 7. Click Save Profile to confirm your changes.

I n t r o d u c t i o n t o S o c i a l M e d i a - P i n t e r e s t 7 Terms: Pin: The main idea of Pinterest is to pin pictures to boards. A pin can be what you put on the board, but it can also mean the act of placing something on the board. Board: These are virtual cork boards or pin boards. You can name them according to the group of pins you want in that category. People use their boards to share pictures about their interests. You can also browse other boards created by other people. If you really like the board, you can follow it or all the user s boards. Repin: When you see a pin that you like, you can repin it and place it on the board you want. Like: If you see a pin you like but you don t necessarily want to pin it on one of your boards, you can just like it. Follow: Following a board or a Pinterest user means that you will see that person s pins on your Pinterest homepage. Comment: You can also leave a comment on your or other people s pins.
