Job Specification Head of Ingenuity, Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium - Winchester Post Title: Salary: Line Manager: Hours: Annual leave: Relocation: Head of Ingenuity, Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium Band F; 35,000-41,000 per annum depending on experience Director of Operations 37.5 hours per week with an hour lunch break. Approximate work hours will be 8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday, however a flexible work pattern will be required including early starts and occasional evening and weekend work. 20 days plus bank holidays You will be entitled to claim up to 500 to assist with relocation to the area.* 1. The Organisation Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is a self-funded, independent educational charity dedicated to sparking curiosity and building science capital for all. Boasting two floors of hands-on interactive exhibits, the UK s largest standalone planetarium and a wide-ranging events programme, the Science Centre is an important regional hub for informal science learning and a popular visitor attraction for families, schools and the general public. The charity extends its reach through its trademark organisation STEM NOW and through successful partnerships with universities and industry. STEM NOW runs the South Central STEM Ambassador Hub on behalf of STEM Learning UK, coordinating more than 4,000 volunteers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire. The team also manages the CREST Awards programme for 16 counties, industry and educational events, and continued professional development training and services. Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium is situated on the outskirts of Winchester within the South Downs National Park. The centre enjoys a stunning rural location with excellent road links from London and across the South of England. This enviable location, the charity s clear mission and its team of highly motivated staff and volunteers, makes Winchester Science Centre a great place to work. Visitor numbers are set to exceed 180k this year and with huge potential for further growth, this is an exciting time to join the team. The Role Due to an internal organisation we are recruiting to the exciting role of Head of Ingenuity, based in Winchester. This is a fantastic and unique opportunity to join an educational charity with a dedicated, friendly and supportive team. The Head of Ingenuity will be responsible for the artistic direction and Page 1 of 5

delivery of an exciting, hands-on, interactive exhibition to delight our visitors and spark their curiosity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As Head of Ingenuity you will be able to work and plan strategically whilst having the particular skills to ensure that all elements of the exhibit and its fabrication have are robust and safe, have scientific and educational integrity, that concepts are communicated clearly and with the optimum level of interpretation and that accessibility is fully considered for all our visitors. The Head of Ingenuity will have the ability to communicate across a wide range of stakeholders, building relationships, raising funds and driving the business. They will also have planning skills and a deadline driven, can do attitude. This role offers the right candidate an exciting and varied role with the opportunity to help shape the future direction of the business and represent the charity nationally and internationally. The post-holder will line inspire and manage a small team of technicians who maintain and repair the exhibition. You will be required to conduct regular performance reviews with your team, set objectives, and provide coaching. As a supervisor and enabler of people you will be expected to plan, inspire, supervise and delegate, and continually review and monitor working practices and patterns. Flexibility is essential as Winchester Science Centre relies on a small team of dedicated individuals working closely together to support and develop the charity, so occasional additional support duties will be required in other areas of the business. 3. Job Description Purpose of the job To lead on the development, design, function and build of the exhibit to ensure that it meets the charity s objectives and excites and engages our customers. To lead on partnership working with the university sector and others to develop and create exhibits which communicate the latest scientific research Oversee the daily management and maintenance of the exhibit Key Responsibilities To oversee exhibit design, build and implementation to ensure all new exhibits fit with the overall strategy of the Science Centre and ensuring their educational and scientific integrity. Draw on the skills and experience of other teams to deliver exhibitions on time and on budget. Producing design briefs and schedules and communicating these to staff, clients and contractors. Developing partnerships with industry, business and educational bodies and institutions Page 2 of 5

Responsible for exhibit issues relating to Health and Safety and the Environment, complying with good practice and relevant legislation in order to provide a safe environment for all staff and visitors. Work with the Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure all new exhibits are visually coherent and in line brand image. Identifying unexpected opportunities which will improve the exhibition. To work with internal and external customers to ensure the exhibition meets their expectations Partnership working including assisting with the installation of external contributor exhibitions. Liaising with and managing external project managers and contractors. Managing and supervising exhibition-related construction/decoration/ modification work carried out by contractors. Planning and allocating resources for exhibitions and effectively distributing work, ensuring coordination and communication across departments. Project management, ensuring projects are delivered on time, to budget and in full. Networking within the Science Centre community nationally and internationally. To deliver a strategic plan for renewal of the exhibit in line with the business plan. Other project support as required by Director of Operations. Special Circumstances There will be occasional work, meetings and events in evenings, early mornings and at weekends which will be compensated by time off in lieu. Additional overtime would be arranged only with agreement of both the employee and line manager. Occasional travel will be required. 4. Person Specification: Essential requirements It is essential that you have the following attributes: Experience and Knowledge Experience and knowledge of interactive exhibition development, from conceptualisation through to design to fabrication, prototyping, implementation and maintenance. Comfortable and confident in technical workshop environment, practical hands-on technical and engineering skills, use of equipment to high standard Evidence of effective planning, project management and advanced organisational skills delivering projects on time, to budget and in full Experience of managing teams of staff and contractors in the delivery of projects on time and on budget.
