MULTI-ENERGY SITE GROUPE URD - PLAISIANS An organisation which cares about people and the planet. Groupe URD (Urgence-Réhabilitation-Développement) is a research, evaluation and training institute. Its main objective is to help improve humanitarian practices in favour of those who are affected by crises. Their headquarters are located in Plaisians in the Drôme provençale. The decision to set up the organisation in a rural location is not insignificant. It is a way of practicing at home on a daily basis what they promote in other countries. The team has made choices to reduce their environmental footprint, both in terms of technology (solar heated water, ecological insulation materials, rainwater harvesting) and in terms of behaviour (recycling of waste, regular planting of trees, car sharing).

1. Site characteristics - Altitude: 900 m - Aspect: South-facing - Surface area of the buildings: 648 m² - Degree of isolation: medium - Rainfall: + /- 700 mm/year - Geographical constraints: site at high altitude, road in reasonable condition 2. Features > During the visit, you will see the spring water collection and storage system, the rainwater harvesting system, the solar panels which produce hot water and an automatic woodchip boiler which heats all the buildings. > The wood framed buildings are insulated on the inside with hemp and lime and have common lime exterior rendering. 3. The buildings Conference room: - Construction method: shuttering - Wall insulation: shuttered hemp - Windows: low emitting double glazing - Integration into the natural environment: 10 cm hemp and lime rendering Office (extension): - Construction method: Monobrick 2. Administrative procedures: Planning permission 3. Other information: - Cost: approx. 30 /m² - Grants: 0 - Site manager: Jean-Marie GIRAUD

4. Solar heating and hot water - Surface area of panels: 22 m² - Model: Sonnenkraft SKN - Aspect: south-facing - Angle: 60 - Size of tank: 2* 1 500 litres - Distance between the panels and the tank: 30 meters underground - Backup: woodchip boiler - Coverage: 40 % 2. Aministrative procedures: Planning permission Provisional analysis by the CEDER Estimate Grant applications to ADEME, Rhône-alpes Region, the Drôme Department 3. Financial details: - Cost: 22 950 - Grants: Region + ADEME 60 % - Annual savings: 1 573 compared to fuel oil; 527 compared to woodchips 4. Other information: - CO2 emissions avoided: 6 168 kg per year. - Installed by: ENERGIFRANCE 5. Automatic woodchip boiler - Area to be heated: 648 m² - Model: Hargassner - Power: 55 KW - Output: 91 % - Volume of the silo: 64 m3 in total, of which 45 m3 usable - Lighting: automatic - Ash disposal: automatic - Feeder: screw - Distance between the boiler and the silo: approx. 1m50 - Woodchip consumption: 56 m3/year

2. Administrative procedures Provisional analysis by the CEDER Estimate Request for grants from ADEME, the Rhône-alpes region, the Drôme department 3. Financial details: - Cost: Boiler: 24 218,19 Boiler room: 3 443,13 Silo: 10 869,03 Boiler room premises (approx.): 5 657,75 - Grants: Region: 7 265 ADEME: Approx. 7 000 Department: Approx. 2 421 - Annual heating costs: 1 400 4. Other information: - Number of deliveries per year: 2 - Fuel produced in: VESC - Installed by: ENERGIFRANCE 6. Rainwater harvest tank - Area: +/- 130 m2 - Volume of tank: 17 m3 - Tank construction: plywood shuttering (plywood + waterproof concrete water repellent cement) - Uses: watering kitchen garden (50 m2) and roses - Filtration: strainers fitted at the top of the downpipe - Treatment: no - Pump: no pump (gravitation) - Remark: the overflow from the spring water tank flows into this tank

2. Financial details: - Cost (excluding tax): 6 000 + 600 of excavation work - Grants: looking into tax credits 3. Other information: - Installed by: Jean-Marie GIRAUD, BERTONE - 2 smaller tanks have also been installed on the site:. An underground septic tank of 6 m3 has been in place since 2002 and harvests rainwater from the north-facing slope of the office building roof.. A masonry storage tank of +/- 3 m3 harvests rainwater from the southfacing slope of the conference building roof, but it leaks and regularly overflows. - As part of an integrated risk management policy (drought, fire), the fire brigade are able to access the water in the storage tank if necessary. 7. Spring water collection - Volume of the tank: 40 m3 - Tank construction: plywood-shuttered (plywood + concrete and waterproof render final plastic coating) - Use: domestic (drinking water, sanitation ) - Treatment: no, but analysed by Valence departmental laboratory twice a year - Filtration: no - Average time taken to fill tank: 21 days (in spring or autumn) 2. Financial details: - Cost (excluding tax): 17 000 and approx. 1 700 of excavation work - Return on investment: - Grants: no - Installed by: Jean-Marie GIRAUD, BERTONE 8. Dry toilets - 1 sanitary block: 2 dry toilets + 1 wash hand basin - 1 solar-heated double tank compost toilet: treatment of excreta (urine +faeces) via composting with the addition of carbon material; composting tanks used alternately. - 1 single tank, urine-diversion, dehydration toilet: urine diversion depends on appropriate sanitary facilities and correct use; faeces treated by dehydration and the addition of alcaline material (sawdust);re-use of urine as fertiliser - Average filling time: under observation - Storage tanks: water-repellent shuttered concrete (tank volume: ~ 1m3) - Unit walls: wood frame with hemp concrete.

- Future plans: re-cycling of by-products (urine and compost) for gardening or agricultural 2. Financial details: - Investment (before tax) : 21 407,61 - Grants: none - Design : Toilettes Du Monde - Construction: Jean-Marie GIRAUD - In operation since: September 2009 9. Future projects - Installation of a photovoltaic plant - Installation of an ecological sanitation system - Planting bulbs to reduce soil erosion
