Performance Minerals Extenders For Coatings and Inks
BASF Performance Minerals Enhance Coatings and Inks In addition to being the world's leading chemical company, BASF is also a world-leader in surface and materials science and a foremost supplier of high-value performperformance minerals solutions from BASF can deliver Increased profitability Improved processing efficiency ance materials for more than a century. Improved performance and appearance Controlled rheology BASF's broad line of performance minerals are produced in state-of-the art processing facilities, where service and quality are key components of every product offering. We also provide technical and logistics support, as well as product development collaboration.
Performance Minerals Solutions for Architectural Coatings Kaolin Kaolin is most commonly associated with titanium dioxide extension; However, it is engineered to perform as a multifunctional extender that simultaneously addresses a wide variety of formulation needs. BASF kaolins in coatings applications can provide: Formulating flexibility Titanium dioxide extension Increased opacity and tint strength Sheen control Stain resistance Improved holdout Brushing ease Mud-crack resistance Color pigment extension Pigment suspension Rheology control Low VOC capabilities Architectural Coatings High brightness, ease of dispersion, controlled particle size distribution, low specific gravity and platy morphology make kaolin a valueadded component in flat, eggshell, semi-gloss and high-gloss paints. Interior Flat Paints In water-borne and solvent-borne interior paints, kaolin adds value by providing titanium dioxide extension (ASP 170, ASP NC) improved opacity and tint strength (Ultrex 96 and Satintone products), sheen control (Mattex and Mattex MX), color pigment extension (ASP 170), washability and stain resistance (ASP NC) and scrub resistance (Satintone W). Exterior Paints In water-borne and solvent-borne exterior paints, kaolin positively impacts tint retention (ASP 400 and Satintone W), gloss retention (ASP 170) and one-coat coverage (ASP 170). The platy structure and low oil absorption of ASP 400 provides a low degree of chalking, crack resistance and a high resistance to dirt pick up. Gloss and Semi-Gloss Paints In water-borne and solvent-borne gloss and semi-gloss paints, ultrafine particle size kaolin products provide excellent titanium dioxide extension while maintaining high gloss. ASP G90, ASP 200 and ASP 170 kaolins can be used in both latex and solvent-borne paints to improve coverage at both high and low PVC's. ASP G92 and ASP 072 products are recommended for water-borne paints only.
Performance Minerals Solutions for Automotive and Industrial Coatings Automotive Coatings Kaolin plays an important role in automotive electro-deposition primers by providing tank stability, film smoothness, corrosion resistance, edge film build and uniformity. BASF kaolin products for automotive primers are characterized by low salts content, easy dispersion, good throwing power and proven performance. Polyester Gel Coats Kaolin improves blister resistance in unsaturated polyester gel coats, which protects fiberglass composites in products at risk of attack by water, such as boats and bathtubs. Translink 37 surface-treated kaolin provides improved blister resistance, better color retention, and viscosity and sag control compared to calcium carbonate, talc and synthetic silica. Satintone 5HB calcined kaolin provides improved opacity. Studies indicate that kaolin also reduces gloss reduction better than other minerals additives after longterm exposure to water. Industrial and Specialty Coatings Kaolins are broadly used in industrial and specialty coatings: Traffic Paint - Satintone W kaolin offers titanium dioxide extension and abrasion resistance. Textured Paint - ASP 900/902 kaolins offers low viscosity, leveling and brushing ease. Baking Enamels - ASP RO kaolin offers improved adhesion, titanium dioxide extension and excellent film properties. Coil Coatings - ASP 200 and ASP 170 kaolins offer improved adhesion and titanium dioxide extension.
Performance Minerals Solutions for Inks Hydrous kaolins are common components of most ink systems. Kaolin extenders for ink applications are characterized by high whiteness and a tightly controlled fine particle size distribution. Hydrous kaolin is pulverized and surface treated for ease of dispersion, improved hydrophobicity, improved wetting and rheological control. Kaolin is a versatile ink extender that simultaneously addresses a wide variety of formulation needs. Kaolin used in ink applications can provide: Strike-through resistance Color pigment extension Low abrasion Rheology control Fast dry time ASP 602 kaolin, a spray-dried product is also suitable for this application where high shear capabilities are available for dispersion. Flexographic Inks The quantities and types of kaolin extenders that are added to flexographic inks are similar to those used for gravure inks. For solvent-borne applications, such as flexible packaging, the high degree of whiteness and light scattering and fine particle size of ASP 170 and Ultrex 96 kaolins are necessary to efficiently extend TiO 2, provide opacity and promote optimal spacing of colorant particles. For water-borne applications, ASP 170 and Satintone 5HB products provide excellent pigment extension, hiding and ease of dispersion. Screen Inks Offset Inks Offset inks are applied in thin films that contain a very high concentration of pigments. Both web and sheet fed offset inks run at high speed and require high viscosity and tack, as well as a high resistance to emulsification from the fountain solution. ASP 101, ASP RO and ASP 170 products offer the best balance of properties and emulsification resistance in ink fountain solution. ASP G90 hydrous kaolin is especially suited for optimal colorant spacing for improved optical properties as well as promoting high print gloss. Gravure Inks Compared to offset applications, gravure inks can use more kaolin extender in the formulation. The very low abrasion and platy nature of hydrous kaolin makes it an ideal product for gravure inks. ASP 600 kaolin provides excellent strike-through resistance and low abrasion properties and is a very good choice for gravure inks. Other grades suitable for this application are ASP 200, Buca and Catalpo hydrous products. Screen inks are characterized by high viscosity to allow for a high film thickness. Compared to gravure and flexographic applications, a thick film is applied during screen printing to provide vibrant color, opacity and longer service life. Calcined kaolin extenders provide high whiteness and light scattering. Satintone 5HB calcined kaolin is an excellent kaolin extender for screen inks. Specialty Inks Kaolin extenders are also used in several types of specialty inks, including letterpress, security, ultraviolet curing and electron beam curing. For technical advice in using kaolin extenders in any of these applications, please contact your BASF representative.
