RES use in the Riga city Juris Golunovs, Head of Energy Efficiency Information Centre of Riga Energy Agency Empowered consumer in the energy market CONFERENCE, Riga, 21.05.2015
OBJECTIVES In order to reduce CO2 emissions by 2020, the SEAP proposes measures to increase energy efficiency (EE) and the use of renewable energy resources (RES) in the public and private sectors. The Riga Smart City SEAP provides for actions and measures to reduce CO2 emissions both directly and indirectly: Measures implemented in municipal bodies and companies, Indirectly the municipality promotes CO2 emission-reducing measures among households in residential buildings.
Decision maker Mayor of Riga to sign Covenant of Mayors Riga City Council Stakeholders Riga Energy Agency Municipal institutions and departments Municipal enterprises DH company partially owned by the municipality Other energy suppliers (electricity, gas) Households and other energy consumers Barriers Lack of awareness of inhabitants on EE & RES issues Lack of supportive financial tools Inappropriate performance of existing infrastructure Passive resistance of low income residents on EE improvements in their households Drivers Growing energy bills Necessity of greenhouse gas emissions & air pollution reduction Riga Smart City SEAP which is integrated with the other city strategic development planning documents is promoting achievement of progress towards a city with a high value-added and resource efficient economy, also contributes to development of a low-carbon economy

SUBSURFACE GROUND HEAT Riga municipality installed space heating based on the ground heat pumps in the two kindergardens, thereby closed the two coal-fired boiler houses: Kindergarden Kastanītis 10 thermal probes in vertical boreholes with depth 120m; Two stage heat pump 57,5 kw
Riga municipality eliminated coal boiler houses and installed heating with geothermal pumps equipment in two pre-schools buildings: Kindergartenn Mežaparkā - 12 boreholes with thermoprobes 80m; Two 29 kw heat pumps

How fare are H2 aplications for city? Letter of intent for the development and usage of hydrogen fuel cell trolleys in Riga was signed on October of 2014 The enterprise "Rīgas Satiksme" as the operator of public transport in Riga, "Ballard Power Systems" and the leading Czech trolleybus and tram manufacturer "Skoda Electrics" ("Škoda") agreed that, in accordance with the "Hy-Trolley" program "Skoda" and "Ballard" plans by 2016 to replace part of the Riga trolleybus traction power-generating backup diesel generators with a new generation of fuel cell modules from "Ballard"
