Services for safety and peace of mind s Industrial Solutions and Services Your Success is Our Goal

All-around service You can depend on Siemens Service. Combining service and support is not just a convenience but part of a fully integrated global concept. All-around service at all levels to benefit the customer. From a customer standpoint we achieve this by providing everything from a single source engineering, financing and lease-to-purchase; installation and commissioning; maintenance and repairs, and training. Advantages lie in the time and money they save as well as in the planning and technical support they are given, not to mention financial security as well. The examples given below demonstrate how all these benefits are tied together. Planning and configuration from Siemens The challenges presented by traffic in large conurbations are growing steadily every day. Against this background, local traffic planners are constantly confronted with new, sometimes conflicting demands by residents and associations as well as by politicians. In spite of stretched budgets, they want a smoother traffic flow, greater road safety (especially for areas around schools and playgrounds), less traffic in the city, more consideration given to the needs of the disabled, and general improvement of urban life as such. Nevertheless this is possible and is being demonstrated by Siemens every day with SITRAFFIC Engineering. With over 100 employees and our many years of experience, we work together with our customers today to set the standards for tomorrow's traffic. Example: the town of Bietigheim- Bissingen In Bietigheim-Bissingen the primary goal is to keep buses on schedule; together with private vehicles buses use up nearly all the available traffic space. As is typical public and private traffic is concentrated on the transit road, the B27, that goes through the town. Depending on the time of day, intrazonal and through traffic has to be controlled in such a way that it does not interfere with the regular bus services. In order to shorten bus traveling times especially by reducing the time lost at traffic lights and increase the attractiveness and acceptance of the public transportation system, Siemens was given the job of working out new signal programs. These were developed in close collaboration with the town of Bietigheim and the local bus company. The needs of the other road users, the local conditions, the safety aspects, the technical equipment and facilities, and the various traffic-policy stipulations were all incorporated into this integral concept. As a measure of success for the project, there was a 30 percent drop in the time lost at traffic lights and a 26 percent average rise in the traveling speed of public transportation vehicles despite an overall increase in traffic of 7 percent. 2

Siemens provides the finance Invest wisely with lease-to-purchase, in spite of tight budgets. When people hear about services in the field of traffic control and management, many initially think of consulting, procurement and planning or installation, maintenance and engineering services, etc. But Siemens goes one step further and provides financial services as well. When it comes to acquiring forwardlooking, high-performance technologies, you, as the decision-maker, are faced with a yearly dilemma often based on funding restrictions. You bear responsibility for both people and the environment and would like to cost efficiently improve the infrastructure in a way that takes account of economic, ecological and safety needs of your community. Try something new try us! Follow the example of other towns and cities and take advantage of our popular lease-to-purchase option. The aim of this concept is to give you more leeway in planning your investment. Instead of buying outright, we suggest that you make your acquisitions within the framework of a tailor-made leaseto-purchase concept. The advantages: Increased flexibility, more economic efficiency and greater transparency. The investment costs are distributed over the period of the contract and the payments can be adapted to your annual budget. And, of course, you can speed up repayment any time you like by paying back larger amounts than your contract actually requires. As you can see, service for us means much more than only doing what is normally expected. 3

Installed by Siemens Expert installation ensures high customer satisfaction. Expert installation ensures high customer satisfaction. With our highly trained, highly qualified and strongly motivated personnel, we will continue to be able to meet the demands of our customers into the future as well. Due to the complexity and variety of the systems to be installed and also because of the high safety standards involved, the installation personnel must posses the latest available know-how in order to carry out changes, commissioning and inspections of traffic lights in a cost-effective manner. Indispensable special knowledge As a result of the variety of products and systems, it is necessary to have specialist knowledge about detectors, transmission methods, traffic computers, supplies, commissioning and, of course, the hardware and software needed. Comprehensive knowledge of guidelines and legal directives for traffic light systems and the road traffic regulations are essential. Apart from the classical traffic control technology, the equipment that has to be put into operation includes traffic guidance systems, fog sensors, traffic congestion warning installations, emergency call systems on freeways, traffic management systems, parking space management installations and pay and display machines featuring electronic payment. Example: Traffic Eye measuring station In November 1997, the DDG (society for traffic data) gave Siemens the job of supplying, installing, commissioning, maintaining and repairing all the flexible Traffic Eye measuring stations in Southern Germany. This was followed by an order in July 2000 for the erection of a further 1,000 detection systems for the freeways in the northern half of Germany, where our Traffic Eye was being used. Due to the reliable maintenance work and fulfillment of the contract, there was a follow-up contract in August 2003 for freeways in the south of Germany. Completion of the work for the freeways in the north is scheduled for August 2004. The standard configuration for this detection system comprises a bracket, the housing with fitted solar panel, and also two infrared detectors. After the traffic data are collected they are transmitted via mobile radio to a control center. The complete system is mounted on the railing of an overpass over the central reservation of the freeway with the detectors aligned to the overtaking lanes. Installation and commissioning were carried out above the flowing traffic and therefore special safety precautions had to be taken. All the parts that had to be mounted, as well as all the tools, had to be secured against falling. Within a period of twelve weeks, up to eight teams from many different regions worked on the project. Punctual provision of the equipment needed at the different locations was a huge logistical challenge. Additional measuring stations have been installed within the framework of the plan to expand the existing network so that our detectors are now able to supply reliable traffic data covering approximately 5,000 kilometers of the freeways in Germany. 4

Siemens ensures high availability Satisfaction creates trust. Maintenance contracts and promises are fulfilled to customer satisfaction and so create a feeling of mutual trust. The following examples are a demonstration of how to successfully expand your business operations on the basis of comprehensive maintenance. The Aberdeen tunnel in Hong Kong 1.8 km long, the Aberdeen tunnel connects Wan Chai and Aberdeen and is the most important traffic artery between the north and south of Hong Kong Island. The 20 year old tunnel has been completely re-equipped and has been fitted with the latest traffic signs based on LED and prism technology. Installation and the cabling involved fitting copper and glass-fiber cables, video cameras over the whole route as well equipping the traffic control center. The traffic data is acquired by means of video cameras along the road to automatically detect accidents or traffic congestion. When such an event occurs predefined programs connected to the traffic control center will warn motorists or, if there is a hazard, block off the tunnel. High-speed repair service for London In London for the first time a rapidresponse motorcycle service has been introduced to help reduce the time it takes to repair traffic control equipment. In collaboration with Transport for London, a new Honda Deauville 650 with the SIEMENS logo, fitted with side panniers, a top box and a flashing amber beacon is now providing a highspeed alternative to responding to fault calls and distributing spares. Initially, the Siemens motorcycle is being used as a speedy method for delivering spare parts to service engineers. There are, however, plans to extend this service to encompass the fast resolution of simple faults that do not necessarily need the attendance of an engineer. 5

Training by Siemens From beginners to system specialists. The training centers of Siemens ITS in Munich and Poole (U.K.) offer a wide range of courses and seminars. This allows the learner to continually expand competence and thus to adapt appropriately to changing markets and products. From the beginner to system specialist Starting with beginners' courses which provide a general insight into the world of intelligent traffic systems the training continues on to special courses relating to all products and systems. The main emphasis is placed on acquiring knowledge and on training for commissioning as well as on maintenance of the highly complex traffic systems and equipment. The participants come from local communities who want to maintain their installations themselves and from the Siemens maintenance teams as well. Overview and specialization Complex knowledge is conveyed in the context of courses conducted on the subject of computer-aided signal control systems for medium-sized and large cities. This starts with special knowledge concerning system architecture and goes on to include the strategic traffic-dependent control methods that are used in such systems. The aim is not only familiarization with the latest operator-friendly user-interfaces, but also training with modern PC tools for traffic planning, visualization, documentation, statistics and data supply in the overall system. In the two training centers, a team of experienced trainers focuses on the implementation of new concepts and new media in the context of learning and teaching; as well as on the efficient running of the study courses themselves. Strong emphasis is placed on continuously updating the study documents available and the learning environment as well as on self-controlled learning combined with practical training. Maintaining a culture of learning Both of the training centers provide general, basic information on ITS topics as well as on courses in the fields of traffic management and control systems. At the end of each year of study, a user meeting takes place for keyaccount customers. Here, the participants have the opportunity to exchange ideas and to find out about the latest developments. The training teams in Munich and Poole have a common goal: to convey technical knowledge to customers and interested system engineers in order to help them in their day-to-day work. During the courses, many different topics are dealt with from installing a controller to corresponding system configurations. 6
