SOCOSURF TCS / SOCOSURF PACS CHROMIUM VI FREE CONVERSION AND SEALING Technical Data Sheet - Fiche Technique SOCOSURF TCS and SOCOSURF PACS products are an alternative process for chromated (chromium VI) conversion treatments or for sealing solutions after anodizing. This process brings an anticorrosion protection on aluminium and magnesium alloys that is comparable to the hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) process. The process consists in 2 successive baths. SOCOSURF TCS is used either for conversion, which produces an iridescent protection layer on the surface of parts, or for the sealing process after anodizing (BSA, TSA, SAA,...). It is based on trivalent chromium Cr(III). SOCOSURF PACS is a passivating rinse process that reinforces the conversion or the sealed anodization coating. The process can be used for local touch-ups (please refer to the annex "socosurf TCS socosurf PACS touch-up annex"). Process performances High resistance to corrosion on numerous alloys (2XXX and 7XXX series): >200 hours resistance to salt spray on Al 2024 T3 (ASTM B-117 / ISO 9227) after conversion. This meets the MIL-DTL-81706 standard. Electrical conductivity: Meet the requirement of MIL-DTL-81706B Type II Class 3, before and after salt spray exposure on Al 6061 T6. Paint system adhesion is promoted: grad 0/grad 0 and 1 (ISO 2409) after conversion (before/after 14 days of water immersion). Process performances are constant and reproducible. USES SOCOSURF TCS and SOCOSURF PACS can be used: As conversion and sealing after aluminium anodization to obtain the best corrosion resistance or promote the paint system adhesion. As conversion for magnesium parts to ensure the best corrosion resistance or promote the paint system adhesion. For local touch-ups on aluminium alloys. DIRECTIONS FOR USE SOCOSURF TCS and SOCOSURF PACS are concentrated products, with ph adjustements during bath set up. Use demineralized water to set up baths and rinsing tanks. The recommended water quality is the following: 1/5
For bath set up and intermediate rinsing operations: ph (@ 25 C/77 F): 5,0 à 7,0 Total dry residue (mg/l)< 20 Conductivity (µs/cm)< 20 For final rinsing: ph (@ 25 C/77 F): 5,0 à 8,5 Total dry residue (mg/l)< 400 Conductivity (µs/cm)< 400 1/ BATH SET UP Conversion bath: 32% (v/v) SOCOSURF TCS + demineralized water Passivating bath: 10% (v/v) SOCOSURF PACS + 5%(v/v) hydrogen peroxide diluted at 35% TECHNICAL GRADE + demineralized water Use dedicated tanks made of PVC/PVDC/PP/INOX 316L for the 2 baths.the heating coil protections must be made of teflon or PVDF. Check the ph according to the indicated values (see hereunder). Agitate. 2/A. CONVERSION TREATMENT ON ALUMINIUM ALLOYS Prepare the surface with a degreasing product such as SOCOCLEAN then with the SOCOSURF A1858/A1806 deoxidizer (refer to the relevant technical data sheets). Start by treating parts in the SOCOSURF TCS bath prepared according to the following procedure: Bath temperature: between 35 and 45 C (40 C ideally) / between 95 and 113 F (104 F ideally). Agitation: fluid recirculation pump is recommended or possibly mechanical agitation free from turbulence. During immersion of the parts in SOCOSURF TCS bath, NO agitation or the weakest as possible. ph: between 3.8 and 4. Adjust with ammonia diluted at 5% to increase the ph. Add slowly sulfuric acid diluted at 5% to reduce ph. Contact time: between 5 and 15 minutes (ideally 10 minutes). 2/5
Filtrate SOCOSURF TCS bath is recommended (0.1 to 2 renewals / hour depending on the size of the tank - pore size less than 25 µm) Following, treat parts in the SOCOSURF PACS bath prepared according to the following procedure: Bath temperature: between 20 and 30 C (25 C ideally) / between 68 and 86 F (77 F ideally). Agitation: free from turbulence during the process or by fluid recirculation. ph: between 4.2 and 5.3. Adjust with ammonia diluted at 5% to increase the ph. Add slowly nitric acid diluted at 5% to reduce ph. Contact time: between 3 to 7 minutes (ideally 5 minutes). TYPICAL PROCESS FOR ALUMINIUM CONVERSION Degreasing with SOCOCLEAN-type product > Rinsing* > Deoxidation SOCOSURF A1858/A1806 > Rinsing* > Conversion process SOCOSURF TCS > Rinsing* > Passivation process SOCOSURF PACS > Rinsing* *About rinsing process : after each step the surface has to be rinsed ideally with demineralized water. The rinsing process has to be adapted to the surface treatment line and to its load. If the part is steamed at the end of the process, do not to exceed 60 C (140 F) 2/B. SEALING PROCESS FOR ANODIZED ALUMINIUM After anodizing, the process is equivalent to the one described above with a longer contact time in SOCOSURF TCS bath: between 15 and 40 minutes (to be optimized depending on the anodization type and the aluminium alloy). The immersion duration in SOCOSURF PACS remains unchanged. 3/ BATH MAINTENANCE A monitoring for the baths should be established in order to ensure the best process performance (ph followup and titrations - consult the specific sheets). For the bath maintenance, the products below will be used: SOCOSURF TCS SOCOSURF TCSADD1 3/5
