Contents : What is FIBC??? History Of Global FIBC Industry Journey of FIBC Industry in India. Advantages of FIBC Safety & Precautions while Using FIBC Certifications & Standards Emmbi Polyarns Limited, Today & Future 2

3 This is FIBC.

4 What is FIBC??? Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC) also known as Big Bags, Jumbo Bags or Bulk Sacks Are made from polypropylene tape woven fabric FIBCs are collapsible and of self contained containers

5 What is FIBC cont Flexible cubicle containers designed to carry loads up to 2000 Kgs Designed to be lifted from the top by means of integral lifting loops or straps. Has various filling and discharge arrangements to suit the tailor made requirement of the user. FIBCs are reusable and recyclable.

Filling & Closure Arrangements of FIBC s Open Top with Hem Tie-Down Flap Duffel Top Open Top & Tightening Holes 7 Open Top with Draw Cord Filling Spout

Discharge Arrangements of Various FIBC s Discharge Spout Discharge Spout with Iris Protection Discharge Spout with Petal Closure Discharge Spout with Sewn Cover 8 Discharge Spout with Protection Flap Full Drop Bottom Quick Discharge/ Conical base

History of Global FIBC Industry The concept started in early 60 s in Europe, Japan & USA. Early FIBCs were made with PVC coated nylon / polyester woven fabric. Use of polyolefin fabric is experimented in early 70 s. Commercial use of present avatar of the FIBC is from early 80s. 9

History of Global FIBC Industry Cont.. Rapid growth in FIBC usage since mid 1970 s and after US Department granted exemptions for shipment of hazardous chemicals in 1980 s. Manufacturing which started in USA Central Europe has moved to South America, Eastern Europe to Asia. Asia is the Largest Hub of FIBC Production since mid 90s. 10

12 Advantages of FIBC

Advantages of FIBC Cont Each FIBC can carry up to 1000 times its own weight. Each FIBC has integral lifting loops, eliminating the need for pallets. Excellent Printability. Efficient use of space with Specific Designs Simple to use 13 Cost effective

14 Advantages of FIBC Cont Very strong yet flexible Low per mt packaging cost Variety of dimensions available Variety of filling, discharging and lifting facilities Can be used for hazardous chemicals as specified in the UN Chapter 6.5 Recommendations.

Advantages of FIBC Cont Conventional Loading System Current Packaging System: 25kg bags or 50 kg bags Bags required for 1000 kgs = 25x 400 bags / 50kgs x 200 bags Number of Workers = 6 Time taken to load 1 vehicle = 3 to 4 hours 15 * Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers

Advantages of FIBC Cont Efficient Loading With the help of FIBCs On the other hand, FIBC bags: 1000kg capacity Number of Workers = 1 Time taken to load 1 vehicle = approx. 20 30 minutes 16 * Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers

17 Advantages of FIBC Cont

18 Advantages of FIBC Cont

Eco Friendly Packaging FIBC For Packaging 10 MT Powder/Granular Material You need 400 X 25 Kg Bags. 100gm/bag X 400 Bags = 40 Kg of PP Material Or 200 X 50 Kg Bags. 140 gm X 200 PWS Bags = 28 Kg of PP Material Or 10 X 1000 Kg. 1800 Gm X 10 = 18 Kg PP Material 19

Energy Saving Using FIBC 55 % PP Material & Processing Energy Saving over 25 Kg Bags. 36 % PP Material & Processing Energy Saving over 50 Kg Bags 20

Energy Saving by Using FIBC Total world market of FIBC 7.5 MMT 10% saving in the Polymer by using 0.75MMT Crude Oil required of producing 0.75 MMTPP Energy required to produce 0.75 MMT PP is 975 million Unite Hence the Saving is Energy required of process 0.75 MMT Raffia PP is 660 million Units Hence the Saving is 65 million barrels 97.5 million units 66. million units 21

Potential Areas of FIBC Application 22 Food grain Spices Sugar Tobacco Flour Fertilizer Cement Petrochemicals, Resins Pharmaceuticals Carbon black Agro Chemicals Salt Minerals Detergent, Silica

Safety & Precautions : Storage Storage of empty FIBC s Empty FIBCs and liners should be kept clean and stored undercover in such a manner that accidental damage, exposure to sunlight and extreme climatic conditions are avoided 23

24 FILLING FIBCs FIBCs are preferably filled with the base of the bag supported by the ground or a pallet, and the body of the bag supported by the top lift device. If the FIBC has a discharge spout, it should be tied off or closed before filling.

25 LIFTING FIBCs When lifting FIBCs with a fork lift truck, be sure that the fork lift tines are spaced correctly. All lifting loops, sleeves, or other lifting devices should be vertical, so that no lateral forces will be created in the FIBC. Be sure that the lifting loops are not twisted. Fork lift tines should have rounded edges and/or protective covers. FIBCs should be raised or lowered smoothly. (See Illustration Below)

26 Carrying with fork lift trucks The fork lift truck must be suitable for the load to be carried. When traveling with a FIBC hanging from the fork lift tines, there is a danger of the truck becoming unstable. The FIBC should be held close to the mast and as low as possible with the mast tilted slightly backwards. Make sure that the FIBC body will not be damaged by the wheels of the truck. The load should not restrict the view of the driver. FIBCs must not be dragged. The truck should be brought to a stop before the FIBC is raised or lowered. (See Illustration Below).

27 Handling with cranes or hoists The hooks, spreader bars or other devices used for lifting, should have rounded edges and/or protective covers. FIBCA recommends the use of safety hooks with an integrated latch to prevent the hook from accidentally slipping off the loop. Hooks should have a sufficiently large radius to prevent squeezing the loop. When the FIBC is suspended, the loops must be vertical, without any twists or knots. (See Illustration Below)

28 Righting FIBCs To right an FIBC that has toppled on its side, an endless fabric sling, wound through all the lifting loops, should be used. Any attempt to lift the FIBC using fewer loops than those provided, may result in the loops being torn off. (See Illustration Below)

29 Emptying FIBCs FIBCs are usually emptied by gravity, but can also be emptied by suction. When emptying by gravity through a bottom discharge spout, the rate of discharge can be controlled by restricting the outlet. Flow can be stopped by lowering the FIBC onto the discharged load. FIBCs with a plain/solid bottom can be emptied by cutting the base of the bag. Again, the flow can be stopped by lowering the bag onto the discharged load.

30 Emptying FIBCs No one should stand under an FIBC during discharge. A bottom discharge spout should be opened only when the FIBC is suspended over a safety support that will prevent injury to the operator in the event of a failure of the lifting device. Under no circumstances should anyone stand underneath a suspended FIBC; or place their arm beneath an unsupported FIBC.

Certifications and Standards Tests For Performance Evaluation Of FIBCs The performance test includes :- Cyclic top lift test Compression / Stack test Drop and Topple test Tear test Vibration test Righting test UV stability test 31
