Job Summary Clinical Tutor, Agenda for change 8b (Psychology Directorate) Clinical Tutors are members of the clinical practice team. This team plays a pivotal role in the relationship between NHS Education for Scotland, the University of Edinburgh and Local NHS Boards. Through input to the Joint Training Committee and programme team meetings they affect the longer term strategic direction of the training programme, and the operational delivery of it, respectively. As NES funded staff they help manage the relationship between NES as training commissioner and the university as training provider. As NHS staff they help maintain the commitment of local NHS psychology departments to providing clinical placements and academic input. As Clinical Tutors for the university programme they exercise a duty of care in terms of the personal, professional and clinical development of clinical psychology trainees. The Clinical practice team are accountable for the delivery, quality assurance and development of clinical practice education and training for doctorate level clinical psychology trainees who will be competent and fit to practise within NHS Scotland. Clinical tutors have responsibility for overseeing the clinical, personal and professional development of up to 30 trainees throughout the 3 years of their training. This involves appraisal, pastoral support and assessment of competence as well as setting and monitoring learning objectives at regular meetings (mid placement visits, end of placement meetings and joint annual reviews). It may also involve judgments of trainee fitness to practise, conduct, health at work and making recommendations regarding potential failure of placements and/or the programme. Clinical tutors contribute to the approval of placement plans ensuring that these are suitable for the trainee s learning needs in balance with the service requirements and the availability of suitable supervisors and meeting the requirements of the BPS and HCPC standards. Clinical tutors are responsible for developing, delivering and monitoring post qualification supervisor training for clinical psychologists. Clinical tutors are involved in the development and delivery of teaching including Professionalism and Practice teaching and teaching on specific topics or clients groups in accordance with their clinical speciality and interests. Clinical tutors take responsibility for a range of project work, often related to meeting the BPS/HCPC standards or to the development of the programme, for instance Expert by Experience involvement strategies and implementation, course review processes and competence assessment process.

Clinical tutors contribute to the development and implementation of selection processes for the programme, including assessing candidates on tasks at interview. Clinical tutors contribute to the strategic development of the programme and the national clinical practice and supervision agenda, developing policies and procedures which enhance quality assurance and educational governance. Clinical Tutors will be required to understand the complex inter communication processes across the multi partnered environment (NES, the University and numerous NHS Health Boards. There is therefore the requirement, in collaboration with the Clinical Tutor Team, to liaise and communicate effectively with a wide range of personnel across this complex communication network. On a daily/weekly basis such contacts include: University Academic staff, Clinical Practice Director, University support staff (e.g. IT, secretarial staff), Doctorate level clinical psychology trainees, NHS and Social Care Local Managers and Employers, NHS Local Tutors, NHS supervisors, NES project leaders and co workers. Clinical tutors may act as research thesis supervisors for trainees and may be active researchers in clinical practice education or in the quality assurance and governance of clinical practice education for psychologists in training. There is an expectation that clinical tutors are working concurrently, by separate arrangement, in a clinical capacity.
