10 11 SYSTEMS ENGINEERING Systems Engineering is an inter-disciplinary field that focuses on how to design and manage complex engineering systems over their life cycles. The digital railway is a step change in the industry, introducing new technology to the operational railway. Bringing complex and disparate components together requires a multifaceted approach. Starting with the requirements definition, through to the system architecture, modelling, integration, and assurance, the Systems Engineering process is essential. Requirements Management is a key tool in being able to define the success of a project. By tracing requirements from their concepts, through to the design and implementation phases, is a complex and difficult task. Being able to demonstrate to your stakeholders that you have delivered what you promised, through analytical documented evidence, is priceless. Technical Subject Matter Expertise Requirements Management & Analysis Systems Architecture Ergonomic and Human Factor Design Design Management Interface Management System Integration Verification & Validation Systems Assurance Entry into Service Support Technical Evaluation and Tendering Support System Integration is the process of bringing together different subsystems to work together to achieve the requirements. The greater the complexity, the greater the need for strong system integration. Safety Engineering and Safety Assurance is integral to ensuring that the System is safe to use. Safety Engineering is about building a body of evidence that supports the argument which shows the system is safe to operate. 12 13 PROJECT MANAGEMENT Project Management is the discipline of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team, to achieve specific goals and to meet specific success criteria. The temporary nature of projects stands in contrast with business as usual, which are repetitive, permanent, or semi-permanent functional activities to produce products or services. In practice, the management of these two systems is often quite different, and as such, requires the development of distinct technical skills and management strategies. The key to any successful project is the people, the products, and the processes. Getting the strategy right, including understanding the commercial landscape, both currently and as the project progresses, has been shown to reduce cost and risk throughout the life cycle of the project. Projects tend to require significant investment in time and energy. Stakeholders need to be taken on the journey so that they understand that their requirements are being met by the solution. 14 15 INFRASTRUCTURE Infrastructure is the foundation on which the railway is built, and its critical nature means it needs to be completed precisely. Planning for major infrastructure projects is a time consuming and difficult process. Being able to take the client s vision and transforming it into a feasible, costed, and achievable solution that can be presented to others requires passion and engineering expertise. Working with Stakeholders to achieve a common goal, to deliver a solution that meets everyone s expectations, is critical to ensuring projects progress through the planning stages. 16 17 RAIL OPERATIONS Operations is the focus of any railway. Delivering affordable services for both passengers and freight customers, on time and safely, is the goal. Planning for this starts in the design phase, where the goals need to be embedded in the requirements, so that the railway can be operated successfully. Getting a clear specification, and a robust strategy that includes the operational planning requirements, is essential. Wherever new technology is introduced to an operational railway, it is important to manage the business change. This will ensure the operational staff participate in the journey, allowing them to utilise the technology and improve their performance.
