Alberta Economic Development and Trade Overview The ministry consists of the Department of Economic Development and Trade, which includes 12 international offices established in high-priority markets, the Alberta Enterprise Corporation and the Alberta Innovates Corporation. Economic Development and Trade leads efforts to diversify and make Alberta s economy resilient, building on its strengths and entrepreneurial spirit, by catalyzing opportunities that create jobs, trade, investment and business competitiveness. The ministry develops and implements economic development strategies, action plans and policies that will foster sustainable growth, encourage industry diversification, support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), enhance market access to attract trade and foreign investment and leverage science and technology, so that Alberta has a resilient and sustainable economy that supports Albertans. As Managing Director of the Alberta Singapore Office you will be uniquely positioned to support Alberta companies as they look to export into Southeast Asia, and attract investment from one of the world s top financial centres. With a team of locally engaged staff to support you, you will be the lead representative for Alberta's trade, investment and advocacy interests in the region, and will provide direction and coordination to the Alberta government's efforts to promote the advantages of doing business in Alberta and to attract creative global companies to invest into the province. In this role you will need to apply your diplomatic and network building skills as you work with dynamic companies, senior leaders, investors, and High Commission staff to create trade, investment and advocacy wins for Alberta. Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Trade and Investment Attraction, you will provide strategic leadership in developing strategies, building market intelligence, and delivering innovative programs to expand Alberta's presence in the Southeast Asia and Oceania region. Major Accountabilities Managing the operations of the Singapore international office including: assisting Global Affairs Canada with the hiring and managing of locally engaged staff assigned to Alberta. developing and managing of the office operational plan and budget. developing and managing programs and services to serve Alberta and local international clients. liaising with federal partners within co-located office. Building awareness and understanding of Alberta as an excellent location to live, conduct business and visit by: developing intergovernmental and business relations with key decision-makers. representing the province at key promotional events. working with local media and implementing and supporting key marketing initiatives. Increasing Alberta exports to market by: gathering general and sector-specific market opportunities and intelligence. establishing and managing relationships with potential partners and clients. gathering competitive intelligence and providing introductions of potential clients to Alberta companies. Promoting investment to Alberta by: identifying and building relationships with existing businesses with Alberta investments. identifying and building relationships with companies that could benefit from investing in Alberta to grow their business. providing intelligence, advice and introductions to Alberta companies or organizations looking for investment partners. Supporting the initiatives and objectives of the Alberta Government by working closely and collaboratively with the Asia Pacific branch of Economic Development and Trade (EDT) on: gathering and disseminating information and market intelligence on agreed upon sectors of priority. developing knowledge of trends and opportunities in the local economy by establishing local contacts. providing introductions and logistical support for inbound missions. Authorities The Executive Director is directly involved with the administration of legislation related to the business of the department and other legislation related to leadership responsibilities and delegated authorities. Financial and Human Resource Management The Managing Director Singapore is responsible for the effective management of a staff complement of approximately two full time equivalencies and an annual budget of $800,000.
