3.Site Description Irish Country Meats was acquired by Slaney Foods Ltd a member of the Linden Foods Group in June 2000 and continues to trade as Irish Country Meats. The plant is located on a Greenfield site on the N11 equidistant form the towns of Gorey & Enniscorthy. The plant was constructed in 1986/87 and was commissioned in August 1987. The site is c12 hectares of which c.4 hectares is dedicated to plant and buildings. The remainder is under pasture and is partitioned to accommodate overnight stock holding when required. The plant engages in the slaughter and processing of sheep. Annual throughput is currently c. 400k head. Output from the plant encompasses whole carcass, deboned cuts, offal, petfood constituents and skins. These products are supplied to a diverse customer base at home and abroad. The plant is licenced by the Department of Agriculture and holds an Integrated Pollution Control Licence issued by the Environmental Protection Agency. Organic wastes are conveyed off site to rendering plants and approved landspreading sites. Liquid wastes are treated within the confines of the site and treated discharge enters the Bann River which is a tributary of the Slaney, the confluence point being some 10kms south of the plant. The number of employees at this established activity is 180.
4.Summary Information 4.1.Emissions to Water Summary Period: January 2009 December 2009 SE-1 Licence Emission Limit no greater than the following BOD COD Suspended Solids Phosphorus Ammonia Oils Fats & Greases Detergents Nitrates Heavy Metals Aluminium Flow / Day Flow / Hr 20mg/l 150mg/l 30mg/l 2mg/l 10mg/l 15mg/l 10mg/l 10mg/l No Limit No Limit 430m3/ day 19m3 / hr
Process Description Process waste from the factory is sent via a drainage system to a rotary brush screen. This brush screen removes the coarse solids from the process flow. The influent then passes through a multistage fat settlement tank. Following the fat settlement stage the liquid then passes to a 678m3 balancing tank. Post balancing the process flow enters a 540m3 anoxic tank for nitrate removal and ammonia oxidation. After this stage the influent is split in two equal flows via a splitter chamber. These individual flows then enter two 674m3 aeration tanks which have an average retention timer of c. 5 days. The mixed liquor leaves the aeration tank and enters a 43.59m3 clarifier. Supernatant from the clarifier enters the river Bann while the activated sludge is settled out and returned to the anoxic tank. Summary Information Weekly results from an independent external laboratory which Irish Country Meats use for effluent analysis, daily results from on site testing along with daily flow rates were used to generate the following table of emissions. All values are in kgs.

7.0 Environmental Management 7.1 Environmental Management Programme Report 2009 Objective: To reduce energy costs and increase recycling of waste To Reduce the amount of water and energy used by a minimum of 5% and to increase the amount of cardboard and plastic recycled Time Frame: December 2010 Achievement: Sustainable Energy Ireland carried out an Energy Efficiency Audit in 2009. This was an in depth report with recommendations on energy saving in the following areas a. ESB Usage Reductions b. Gas Reductions c. Water Usage Reductions d. Refrigeration Usage Reduction This is an on going process and the exact amount of Energy Reduction will be quantified at the end of 2010 Greenstar have been contracted to remove all municipal waste & recyclable cardboard/ plastic from April 2010. Part of the agreement was that Greenstar would Audit the site and will help with the recommendations & implementation of further segregation of waste streams.
