Use categories Safe solutions for every building material Which anchor do I need for which substrate? What do I do when faced with mixed masonry? Our ejotherm range with European Technical Approval (ETA) simplifies your choice. High load anchors provide a secure fixing in a variety of substrates, for all insulation types. Your benefits Easy anchor choice using a comprehensive product range for all substrates Solutions for all insulation materials Reduced stock volume Moreover you have a special programme with cost-efficient solutions at your hand. Typical applications are: Rebuilding the stability of damaged ETICS Solutions for renovation Re-establishing the structural stability of exisiting pre-cast concrete panels A B C D E Normal weight concrete Clay bricks Vertically perforated clay bricks Lightweight aggregate conrete Autoclaved aerated concrete Pre-cast concrete panel Solid lime sandstone Sand-lime perforated bricks Solid masonry of lightweight concrete Lightweight concrete hollow blocks Tolerance compensation Determining the required anchor length In order to achieve the highest loads possible, it is important to establish the correct length of anchor. Several elements must be taken into account in order to select the right product, these are shown below. Existing render Adhesive mortar Nominal embedment depth h nom + Tolerance compensation t tol + Insulation thickness h D = Required anchor length l D Notes: If no other specifications are given, the nominal embedment depth h nom is equal to the effective embedment depth h ef. The tolerance compensation consists of: Non-load-bearing layers (thickness of existing render, wood-wool lightweight boards, brick strip tiles etc. (If present, the existing render is often 20 mm thick) + Thickness of the adhesive joint after pressing the insulation boards against the wall (as a rule approx. 10 mm)* + Additional compensation of facade unevenness* = Tolerance compensation t tol h 1 = drill hole depth h ef = effective embedment depth h nom = nominal embedment depth ( h ) ef t tol h D h ef = h nom h 1 t tol = tolerance compensation = insulation thickness h D If the existing facade is found to have extreme differences in surface build-up, it may be necessary to use different anchor lengths. *Facade tolerances are eventually compensated through the actual total thickness of the adhesive mortar. The calculation also applies for the surface fixed installation of ejotherm STR U 2G and ejotherm STR U.

EJOT competency & service EJOT EPD Sustainability is a priority for EJOT Environmental protection and conservation of resources are some of the most important future tasks. These themes are not passing the building and property economics industry. Here the sustainability of building is getting more and more important. Already by planning the construction, it is important to take care by choosing the right building materials. EJOT, as a leading company in the field of ETICS fasteners, has responded to these requirements. The first environmental product declaration (EPD) according to ISO 14025 for anchor manufacturers was obtained by EJOT. The certification is from the Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU), which is currently the only German organisation that works according to international standards and develops internationally approved EPD s in cooperation with the manufacturers. The EPD informs about the manufacture of products till the end of their life. In consideration of an eco-balance the environmental effect of the products will be pictured neutral and transparent. The EPD makes a significant contribution when assessing the construction of sustainable buildings. 7

Fastening of brick slip systems EJOT brick slip system anchors For prefabricated External Insulation Composite Systems with brick slips ETICS facades can come in a multitude of different finishes. Due to the high load area per unit, ETICS use with prefabricated brick slip systems, require anchoring with specific brick slip anchors. These systems require a mechanical fastener with a special countersunk head fixed directly to the facade. The holes are hidden totally, within the mortar joint. If the ceramic cladding is glued on after the anchoring, either completely or in parts, it is recommended to use ejotherm washer anchors (Page 9). The countersunk installation of ejotherm STR U 2G with cap, provides a smooth bonding surface for brick slip systems. 37

Fastening solutions for special applications EJOT fasteners for special applications These days we find that there are increasing demands being placed on existing walls, which have been earmarked for ETICS. Existing facades or damaged substrates are prime areas where assurance may need to be considered. EJOT offers the right answer for these special applications Solutions for "renovating the renovation" (over cladding ETICS) Regaining the structural stability of the inner and outer layers of precast concrete panels Regaining the structural stability of damaged ETICS: Anchoring in problematic substrates Fastening of attachments on ETICS facades 47

Fastening solutions for special applications EJOT VSD 8U-V* Renovation anchor for prewall shells When renovating old building structures and before installing ETICS, legislation demands an inspection of the structural safety of the wall. The structural safety has to be restored where necessary. In some cases cavity wall ties can become corroded over time, leaving the inner and outer substrates, unstable. However the use of the EJOT VSD-8U allows for the structural safety to be restored The zinc-plated steel screw of the EJOT VSD-8U V with building authorities approval, enables a renovation of the outer leaf of outdoor buildings, in an industrial atmosphere and close to the coast. Please notes: After renovation of the outer leaf, an additional facade system with thermal insulation (e.g. ETICS) with a thickness of at least 60 mm has to be applied. Ventilation behind the outer leaf has to be prevented also. Building authorities approved anchor for subsequent installation of curtain walls Very cost effective solution prior to renovating the outer wall Double expansion wall anchor: simultaneous embedment in load-bearing wall and outer wall Clean and fast installation (no mortar required) Universal expansion zone: secure installation into concrete load-bearing walls, solid and perforated brick % setting control Temperature-independent installation Can be installed at 0 C Our Service for you: For safety reasons, rebuilding the stability of an outer wall or a facing wall should be calculated by an engineer. EJOT Anchor Basics EJOT Anchor Basics The EJOT Anchor Basics are a guideline regarding the safe installation of ETICS. With every project, it is essential to consider all of the aspects in order to establish a basis leading to a full system backed guarantee. 63

EJOT Anchor Basics I. Building laws background European Technical Approval / European Technical Assessment General building authorities approval The European Technical Approval / European Technical Assessment is a proof for the fitness for use of a construction product within the meaning of the Construction Products Directive; transposed in Germany by the Bauproduktengesetz ('Construction Products Law'). The ETA is based on tests, examinations and a technical assessment by approval bodies designated by the EU Member States for this purpose. It covers all product characteristics which can be important for the fulfillment of the legal requirements in the Member States, with the relevant levels of performance required being different in each Member State. An European Technical Approval / European Technical Assessment can be granted for construction products for which harmonised specifications according to the Construction Products Directive do not (yet) exist or which deviate substantially from a harmonized standard. Basis for the assessment of the fitness for use are either Guidelines for European Technical Approvals (ETAGs / EADs) prepared by EOTA for the relevant product area, or criteria for assessment procedures that are agreed on with other EOTA bodies for issue of an approval of a specific request (CUAPs). In the interests of the manufacturer the verifications presented to DIBt will be used as far as possible for the European procedure. Allgemeine bauaufsichtliche Zulassungen ('national technical approvals') are granted for such construction products and types of construction for which there are no generally acknowledged rules of technology, DIN standards in particular, or which deviate considerably from these. National technical approvals are granted by the Deutsche Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) for all federal states. They are reliable verications of applicability of construction products and verications of applicability of types of construction relating to requirements of construction works in the field of construction engineering. The European Technical Approval / European Technical Assessment enables the manufacturer to place the CE marking on the construction product and thus the access to the European market. With the CE marking the manufacturer confirms that he carried out the prescribed verification method and that the conformity of the product is given with the approval. 64

EJOT Anchor Basics II. Good reasons mechanically fix ETICS Safe installation on old facades ETICS are often used for energy efficient refurbishment of old buildings. Do you know how much load the existing render can actually carry? For decades it was exposed to weather and emissions, soot, dirt and old paint reduce the bearing strength of the glue. Or single components are not compatible with the composition of the glue ( saponifying ). After installing a new ETICS building physics can change the bearing capacity of the existing render (failure of existing render) even after years. Regarding new buildings residues of release oil on concrete may cause difficulties. Cleaning a facade is complex and costly. Contaminated waste water has to be collected and professionally disposed. Furthermore the existing render can be saturated thoroughly cleaned. However if insulation boards are additionally anchored, usually no special treatment of the facade is necessary. Only loose parts of the render, efflorescence and paint flaking off need to be roughly removed. Possible holes are filled. Eventually anchors provide safe support Weathered facade Facade renovated with an ETICS Highest structural stability When insulation boards are solely glued, the deadweight of an ETICS is passed onto the wall through shearing forces. The used glue is therefore the only connection between wall and insulation. Thanks to their specifically solid anchor washer and high characteristic loads, ejotherm washer anchors give your facade safe support. Through contact pressure the frictional bond between facade surface and adhesive as well as between adhesive and insulation board is steadily increased. This results in a higher stability of the whole system. Additionally, anchors with steel screw or steel nail offer higher safety reserves. Impact of anchoring: Dead load of the system is passed on via adhesive and insulation Washer anchors provide additional contact pressure Advantages Highest stability for the entire system Anchor washers divert wind load Highest security in case of wind loads 65

EJOT Anchor Basics II. Good reasons for anchoring an ETICS Warm outside Cold outside Highest security against hygrothermal impacts Hygrothermal influences like temperature changes and shrinkage lead to fluctuating material expansion that effect the rigid adhesive joints. If solely glued there is a latent danger of the insulation boards to bulge, due to lacking expansion possibility at the joints. Additional anchoring in the area of the joints as well as in the centre of the board results in a mechanical fixing of the system onto the wall and therefore reduces the risk of cracking plaster. Deshalb: zusätzliche Fixierung der Dämmstoffplatten mit EJOT WDVS-Dübeln Additional fixing of the insulation boards with ETICS anchors by EJOT Highest security against wind loads Wind loads affect in the opposite direction of the deadweight. They provide for a vertical tensile load onto the adhesive joint. Special importance is attached to the intersection of wall/ adhesive (new buildings) and of existing render/adhesive (renovation) respectively as well as of adhesive/insulation. High wind loads predominately exist at higher buildings at building edges at free-standing buildings in exposed areas in coastal areas in stormy weather Climate scientists assume that the risk of heavy storms and high structural losses will increase worldwide. EJOT anchors provide additional security! 66

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring Assessing the substrate The expansion zone of an anchor has to perfectly fit the wall substrate found at the building. It is the only way the anchor can optimally fulfil its function within the ETIC system. This is why careful assessment the substrate is essential. ETAG 014 (guideline for anchors in external thermal insulation composite systems) distinguishes standard substrates according to so-called use categories in order to facilitate the assignment of the matching anchor. Use category A Normal weight concrete Pre-cast concrete Choosing the correct anchor Once the substrate has been established, the correct anchor can be assigned with its approval. This is due to the fact that ETA anchors are tested and approved for specific substrate categories. Case 1 The anchor is approved via the building material category, and is outlined in the anchor s ETA. Therefore, it may be used on the building without further testing. The loads given in the approval can be used directly for calculating the necessary number of anchors. Where required, national safety factors need to be observed. Example 1 Solid lime sandstone was determined as wall substrate. This corresponds to use category B. The anchor has an ETA for use categories A and B. For solid lime sandstones, the ETA mentions a characteristic load of 1.2 kn. National rules require a security value of 3 for use category B. Therefore the anchor can be calculated having a design load of 1.2 kn : 3 = 0.4 kn without further testing on the building. Case 2 The anchor has no approval for the determined building material category. If the determined substrate at the building does not belong to a use category for which the anchor is approved according to the ETA, the anchor may not be used on this object. In this case, the usability of the anchor cannot be proven through pull-out tests. Example 2 Vertical coring bricks were determined as wall substrate. This corresponds to use category C. An anchor only approved for use categories A and B may not be used. Use category B Clay bricks Solid lime sandstone Solid masonry of lightweight concrete Use category C Vertically perforated clay bricks Sand-lime perforated bricks Lightweight concrete hollow blocks Use category D Lightweight aggregate conrete Use category E Autoclaved aerated concrete 67

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring Case 3 The anchor is generally approved for the determined building material category, but the identified substrate is not explicitly named in the ETA of the anchor. The anchor may be used if its usability is proven through tests on the building. The object specific characteristic loads are determined through pull-out tests as described in the ETA. When deducting the design load national safety factors need to be incorporated. Example 3 Perforated lime sandstone was determined as wall substrate. This corresponds to use category C. The anchor has an ETA for use categories A, B, C and D. Nevertheless, perforated lime sandstone is not explicitly named in the ETA. Pull-out tests with this anchor on the object result in a characteristic load of 1.5 kn. National rules require a security value of 3 for use category C. The anchor can be calculated having an design load of 1.5 kn : 3 = 0.5 kn. Case 4 The anchor is generally approved for the determined building material category. The identified substrate is already mentioned in the ETA of the anchor, but the gross density or the compression strength of the stone differs from the declaration of the approval. In principle this case corresponds to case 3. The usability for the substructure can be proven through tests on the building. Special case Weather shells of concrete (precast concrete slab-type construction) are assigned to use category A. With any ejotherm anchor the loads may be calculated employing tests on the building. Further criteria for choosing the perfect anchor If in principal several anchor types are applicable in the found building material, further assessment criteria can be employed. Example ejotherm STR U 2G 1) % setting control Homogenous insulation surfaces Even Rendering Permanent contact pressure Less work thanks to premounted expansion element Installation behaviour ++ Loads ++ Reduction of thermal bridges ++ Range of use 2) ++ Embedment depth 3) ++ 1) When applying the EJOT STR principle for countersunk installation 2) A bigger range of application offers more security regarding fluctuating substrate qualities and mixed masonry 3) Please note possible differences between effective and nominal embedment depth when comparing with other products. Combi washer depending on the application Depending on the application, our ETICS anchors can be combined with additional washers. The combi washers are very simple to use and are available in various diameters,, and are placed under the washer surface of the anchor. The further installation is processed as usual. The use of any combi washer, will be dependant upon what insulation is being used. Exact configuration should always be identified by the system supplier. Note: Combi washers are system components of the anchor. They are tested accordingly and described in the approval of the anchor. Therefore washer anchors may only be combined with the matching additional washers by the same manufacturer. EJOT advises: The ejotherm STR U 2G (as washer anchor) as well as the ejotherm SDK U (for fastening rails) have a European Technical Approval for all building material classes. Many substrates are already tested for the approval and named in the ETA. Therefore usually no additional tests are necessary. Should tests on the building site be needed, you have EJOT s service at your hand. Fig. combi washer 68

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring Determinding the necessary anchorage length In order to achieve the highest loads possible, it is important to establish the correct length of anchor. Several elements must be taken into account in order to select the right product, these are shown below. Existing render Adhesive mortal Nominal embedment depth h nom + Tolerance compensation t tol + Insulation thickness h D = Required anchor length l D Notes: If no other specifications are given, the nominal embedment depth h nom is equal to the effective embedment depth h ef. Determining the necessary number of anchors The necessary number of anchors has to be determined for each building individually. According to new European and national wind load standards several factors have to be incorporated. Amongst the most essential influences are the building construction (height, ground plan, profile) as well as the surroundings of the building. Exposed conditions in coastal areas, on mountains or outside closed housing areas normally lead to significantly higher wind loads. Details and actual maps with zones of different wind loads are part of national standards. Generally speaking: the higher the building and the more exposed its surrounding area, the higher the necessary number of anchors. On the other hand high-quality anchors often mean a lower usage of anchors per square metre and thus save material cost and working hours. From the system point of view the anchor usage is increased by the bearing load of the used insulation board as well as the characteristic load and the washer stiffness of the employed anchors. Therefore the working guidelines of the ETICS provider have to be observed. 69

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring Correct processing is crucial for the function of the anchor The position of the anchor results from the anchor scheme of the ETIC system owner. Common anchor alignments are for example: Alignment of anchors for insulation boards with formats 0 x 500 mm, e.g. rigid foam plates of polystyrene and 800 x 625 mm, e.g. mineral wool plates (illustration 1) Alignment of anchors for insulation boards with formats 0 x 200 mm, e.g. lamella plates of mineral wool (illustration 2) Anchors should always be installed in the area of the adhesive, so that they can support the adhesive joint by means of contact pressure in the best way possible. Illustration 1 Illustration 2 Anchors per square metre Possible anchor alignment Anchors per square metre Possible anchor alignment 4 4 6 6 8 10 8 12 10 14 70

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring Drilling methods Depending on the drilling machine and the hammer drill respectively, the following drilling methods are possible: Rotary drilling - without percussion Percussion drilling - many percussions with low energy Hammer drilling - few percussions with high energy The drilling method is dependent upon the embedment in the substrate. It is given in the following table. Rotary drilling Use category Drilling method A Normal weight concrete Percussion/hammer drilling Pre-cast concrete B Clay bricks Solid lime sandstone Percussion/hammer drilling Solid masonry of lightweight C Vertically perforated clay bricks Sand-lime perforated bricks Lightweight concrete hollow Rotary drilling without percussion blocks D Lightweight aggregate Rotary drilling without percussion concrete E Autoclaved aerated concrete Rotary drilling without percussion Percussion drilling Hammer drilling Standard carbide drill for percussion and hammer drilling EJOT special drill for clean rotary drilling 71

EJOT Anchor Basics III. Ways to perfect anchoring EJOT advises: When drilling in rotary mode (without percussion), use our special drills to achieve a clean hole in a short time. Drills are wearing parts. Their durability depends on the solidness of the substructure: The harder it is, the higher the abrasion. To achieve an efficient work progress, drills should be exchanged in time. When drilling, just follow the specified installation references of the individual anchor type (especially the minimum drilling hole depth). The exact geometry of the drill hole is important for the bearing capacity of the anchor. Therefore always drill at a 90 degree angle and never change direction while drilling. This is especially important with regards to soft substrates. Before inserting the anchor clean the hole from drill dust by pulling out the drill several times. EJOT ETICS anchors can be installed in two ways, countersunk into the insulation board using the EJOT STR principle, or flush with the insulation surface (always in combination with additional washer). When surface fixing an anchor, it is essential to ensure that the washer face is neither too proud or too deep within the insulation. If the washer face has been over driven into the insulation, the void needs to be levelled out before installing the mesh. As it will require filling, it may subsequently bear the the risk of cracking the render finish. The other scenario is, if the washer face stands proud of the insulation. In this instance, a thicker mesh may have to be installed over the whole facade, in order to cover the anchor washer, thus resulting in higher costs. Anchor has been over driven Anchor is not deep enough When using the EJOT STR principle, the anchor washer is quickly and cleanly countersunk into the insulation and covered with an STR cap. This way a smooth and homogenous insulation surface can be established for even rendering. No additional work for levelling out the anchor washer is needed. Additionally, the washer face of the anchor is totally isolated to the render coat via the STR cap. Perfect: installation of ejotherm STR U with cap 72
