MSC Background The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global not for profit organization, established in 1997 to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and to ensure healthy oceans for the future. Our vision is for the world s oceans to be teeming with life today, tomorrow and for generations to come. A sustainable seafood market is crucial to making this vision a reality. We use our blue MSC ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world s oceans. We seek to transform the seafood market by recognizing and rewarding sustainable fishing practices and influencing the choices people make when buying seafood. We work with a diverse range of stakeholders including consumers, retailers, food processors and the entire fishing industry. Having experienced remarkable growth over the last 15 years, our blue ecolabel is now one of the most well recognized and successful ecolabels in use over five continents. We now employ circa 200 staff in over 16 offices around the world. About two-thirds of the volume of Canadian fisheries landings are engaged with the MSC program, which represents 80 percent of national landed value. There are over 600 MSC ecolabelled products sold on supermarket shelves across Canada, and growth in chain restaurants use of the MSC Chain of Custody program to demonstrate purchasing of certified sustainable products.
