Woodberry Wetlands Conservation Volunteering Officer Woodberry Wetlands Community Engagement and Learning Officer Woodberry Wetlands Ranger - Woodberry Wetlands Site sessional workers - Woodberry Wetlands Overall Responsibilities: To manage the delivery of activities, projects and services provided by London Wildlife Trust at Woodberry Wetlands. To be responsible for all aspects of the management of Woodberry Wetlands site and facilities including line managing project staff, and the coordination of sessional workers, freelancers, contractors and volunteers. Main areas of responsibility Staff and project management: 1) To line manage and supervise site and project staff working at and from Woodberry Wetlands, this includes full-time and part-time staff, sessional workers, freelancers and volunteers; 2) To act as project manager for projects running at and from the Woodberry Wetlands site, including monitoring, reporting and communicating to funders, including the Heritage Lottery Fund; 3) To coordinate and manage delivery of a diverse programme of services and activities at Woodberry Wetlands, in accordance with the Activity Plan and to promote the work of the Trust, in relation to Woodberry Wetlands; 4) To plan for and coordinate materials and resources for Woodberry Wetlands and associated projects in line with allocated budgets; Protecting London s wildlife for the future The London Wildlife Trust is a company limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales no and registered charity no
2 5) To ensure the development and sustainability of activities provided at and from the Woodberry Wetlands by working collaboratively with the fundraising team and the Regional Development Manager - East to develop ongoing projects and services at Woodberry Wetlands; 6) To maximise and develop the quality and scope of the Trust s outdoor learning offer through managing the Community Engagement and Learning Officer. 7) To manage and support the Community Engagement and Learning Officer in order establish and maintain the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality badge accreditation for Woodberry Wetlands; 8) To maximise and develop the quality and scope of the Trust s volunteering work by line managing the Woodberry Wetlands Conservation Volunteering Officer to deliver on-site volunteering, corporate workdays and associated training programmes; 9) To line manage Woodberry Wetlands site and project staff to deliver outreach programmes to associated community sites and to ensure close working with other Trust staff and volunteers to promote the Trust s work in the areas surrounding Woodberry Wetlands; 10) To be the key point of contact for the Trust at Woodberry Wetlands, to strengthen existing partnerships and develop new partnerships with LB Hackney, local wildlife groups, community groups and businesses, and to represent the interests of the Trust at all times; 11) To maximise PR and publicity for Woodberry Wetlands through a diverse range of media and through liaison with the LWT Communications Team, and other relevant partners; 12) To represent the Trust at relevant internal and external meetings and partnerships as requested, and to ensure that the Trust gets maximum benefit from these. Site and premises: 1) To follow relevant Trust policies and guidelines including the Woodberry Wetlands management and maintenance plan, and to coordinate the review of site specific plans as appropriate; 2) To manage Woodberry Wetlands to maximise its value for biodiversity, to achieve Green Flag status, and for the benefit of the public in accordance with the aims and objectives of the Trust; 3) To ensure the onsite visitor centre, classroom and tool stores are maintained so that they are fit for purpose, that legislative requirements are adhered to and ensuring that sufficient funds are in place to enable this; 4) To support the Regional Development Manager (East) in the day-to-day coordination and management of the Woodberry Wetlands Café franchise, located within the visitor centre. 3 5) To ensure that Woodberry Wetlands is open and accessible at all practicable times, including opening every weekend; this will require the post-holder to manage an effective staff shift rota, to work two weekend days per month and to build a volunteer base to increase and support current opening; 6) To ensure that a schedule of wildlife monitoring is undertaken at Woodberry Wetlands and that the information produced is regularly provided to Greenspace Information for Greater London (GIGL). 7) To ensure all onsite interpretation and signage is produced and maintained to a high standard and updated as necessary and in accordance with the HLF funded Activity and Management and Maintenance Plans General: 1) To ensure that all Trust Policy is adhered to by all staff and volunteers including Conservation Policies and Position statements, Health & Safety Policy, Lone Working Policy, Dignity at Work Policy, Volunteer Policy, Equal Opportunities Policy, and Safeguarding Children and Adults Policies. To ensure best practice in working with all service users; 2) To ensure that Woodberry Wetlands is maintained in a safe condition, ensuring the safety of staff, volunteers and visitors, and report incidences of vandalism and other site misuse to the Reserves Manager and relevant authorities and when appropriate the Trusts Health & Safety Committee; 3) To report on a regular basis to the Health & Safety Committee, and other committees as required; 4) To undertake administrative and budgetary functions to ensure a successful business model for the site is maintained; 5) To promote Trust membership and encourage donations on site, to visitors and service users in liaison with the Trust s membership team; 6) With the support of other Trust staff, to raise funds for the Trusts work from a variety of sources (including identification of potential funding sources). Other areas of responsibility: a) Promotion of the Trust: To work at all times to further the aims of the Trust including promotion of Trust membership. To encourage donations and to assist in and promote related events and campaigns where appropriate. b) Health and Safety: All staff are legally responsible for ensuring Health and Safety considerations are taken into account in all working situations. Staff are encouraged to make reports or suggestions on any matters of concern. c) Equal opportunities: To work at all times within the Trust s Equal Opportunities Policy and to promote equal opportunities wherever possible especially with regard to volunteer and Page 3 of 6
4 membership recruitment. Terms and Conditions Salary: Hours of work: Holidays: Grade 5 Manager 27,000 per annum pro-rata Three days per week 9.30 am pm, including one hour for lunch. The post-holder will be expected to work in accordance with a staff shift rota and potentially work a minimum of two weekend days per month. In addition, some evening and weekend work will be necessary for which time off in lieu will be given. 25 days per annum plus statutory holidays pro rata Tenure: Permanent An enhanceddbs check is required for this role. Those listed as 'Essential' are those that the candidates must have. Candidates who fail to meet these criteria will not be short-listed. 'Desirable' skills and experience are those that it would be advantageous to have, although it is not essential. Essential Experience of working in the nature conservation sector, including experience and knowledge of conservation land management Experience and understanding of involving people in conservation via volunteering; community engagement and outdoor learning Experience of staffing a visitor centre, nature reserve or similar (including maintenance) Demonstrable experience of managing a staff team, freelancers and volunteers Experience of developing projects, fundraising and income generation from a variety of sources Significant and demonstrable experience of project management (ideally Lottery funded projects) Significant and demonstrable experience of monitoring, evaluation and reporting including making financial claims Demonstrable experience of managing resources within budget Commitment to and experience of compliance and best practice in equal opportunities, health and safety and safeguarding children and adults. Proven ability to relate to and work with people from a broad cross-section of the community, ideally including experience of community involvement/development work in an urban context Knowledge of working practices of risk assessment and COSHH assessment in the conservation sector Experience of implementing quality standards e.g. Learning outside the Classroom Quality Badge or Green Flag Award Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) and competent user of Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint Good organisational, communication time management, team-working and facilitation skills Desirable Knowledge of urban nature conservation issues and policy and the management of urban conservation sites Degree in a relevant subject Experience of producing interpretation materials, reports and publicity materials Holding an up-to-date First Aid certificate Full clean UK driving licence A knowledge of London, its people and its wildlife areas Demonstrable media skills, including experience of press, publicity and use of social media.
