PG&E SmartMeter Program Overview Megan O Brien Associate Project Manager Energy Information Network
The PG&E SmartMeter Program Automated meter reading for all customers 10 Million meter upgrades A network to collect meter reads remotely and communicate with the meters and into the home Frequent meter reads - daily for gas, hourly or 15 minute interval for electric Enables demand response programs Enhanced capabilities over time
SmartMeter Program Upgrade Activities PG&E filed with the CPUC in December 2007 to request an upgrade to SmartMeter electric meter technology Solid-state (digital) meter Integrated load-limiting, remote connect/disconnect switch Integrated home area network (HAN) gateway Beginning in July 2008, PG&E is expanding its electric network technology mix to include a radio frequency (RF) solution by Aclara (formally Hexagram, our gas solution provider) PG&E is conducting a pilot of next generation network technologies Field pilot of RF Mesh technology in San Francisco
QUESTIONS THE INDUSTRY IS TRYING TO ANSWER The Home Area Network is in-premise technology that is designed for customers to manage their energy use. Key questions to address Architecture Protocol Device Where is the communication source from the AMI network located? How does the source interface between HAN and AMI? What protocol choice will deliver current and future communications between AMI and end devices? Which protocol will reach all customers end devices? What devices should the utility own? Which devices should the utility support through rebates? Which devices should the utility enable for 3rd party support? Will device be tamper resistant? AMI Network In Home Display (IHD) Programmable Controllable Thermostat (PCT) Key criteria to consider HAN Gateway Costs Upgradeability Penetration Security Adoption Range Evolving standards Costs Direct Load Control (DLC) Energy Management Systems (EMS) Benefit Adoption Ownership Costs
