We do this through close partnership with our sister organisation PHASE Nepal who lead on design and implementation for our integrated health, education and livelihoods projects in remote Nepal. PHASE stands for Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment - Empowerment and Sustainability being the key pillars which run through the organisation. PHASE Worldwide currently has several years secure funding from DFID and the Big Lottery Fund and fundraises through a range of other sources. The current director has been with PHASE Worldwide for seven years and has guided the team through a programme of change that has resulted in greater financial and organisational stability. The outgoing director will be able to support the transition and will be available to facilitate the induction and handover to the successful candidate. The ideal candidate is a high calibre inspirational leader with experience of management within the international development sector. They will be entrepreneurial, resilient and have the ability to sustain a culture of growth and continual improvement. Candidates should bring a strong track record in fundraising and be an experienced and persuasive communicator. This is an exceptional opportunity to continue to grow an innovative international development organisation with a unique approach. If you would like to know more about who we are and the details of the job specification then please visit our website www.phaseworldwide.org 2

Organisational History PHASE Worldwide was founded in 2005 by a group of friends in Rotherham. Nick and Marie Cragg had travelled to Nepal several times in the 1990 s and early 2000 s and built a relationship with the country. Marie was joined on one trip by GP Dr Gerda Pohl who subsequently decided she wanted to work in Nepal. Gerda moved to Nepal for two years working for several small NGOs in a voluntary medical capacity whilst learning the language. Whilst there Gerda met Dr Jiban Karki and Claire Bennett. In 2005 together Nick, Marie, Jiban, Gerda and Claire and other friends founded PHASE Nick, Marie, Gerda and Claire focused on the set up of the UK fundraising operations and Jiban went back to his home country (he had been in the UK completing a Master s degree) to set up PHASE Nepal. PHASE Worldwide was run entirely in a voluntary capacity for several years. This was very successful and the organisation developed a wide support base. In 2011 some paid administrative support was enabled, then in January 2013, PHASE appointed Sarah Galvin as the first full time paid Director. PHASE added a second staff member at the end of 2014. In 2015 the organisation re-located to Bristol and in August 2016 added a second part-time staff member to take the team to three core staff. Gerda and Nick remain trustees of PHASE Worldwide. Gerda lives and works in Kathmandu and works in a voluntary capacity for PHASE Nepal. Jiban remains the Executive Director of PHASE Nepal. The third organisation that falls under the wider PHASE umbrella is PHASE Austria. Run on a voluntary basis by Gerda s sister Brita Pohl the organisation is based in Vienna. Over the past few years, PHASE Austria has raised its profile substantially and has won several grants from donors in Austria for PHASE Nepal. Whilst PHASE Worldwide and PHASE Austria do not work directly together, the two organisations have collaborated and supported each other on various initiatives. Currently PHASE Worldwide supports PHASE Nepal s integrated work in remote Himalayan communities. Specifically supporting health work in 7 communities in Sindhupalchok, Gorkha, Humla and Bajura, agricultural work in Mugu and earthquake recovery projects in Gorkha and Sindhupalchok. In addition to financial support PHASE Worldwide also provides technical support to its partners in Nepal by mobilising and managing professional volunteers, mainly General Practitioners, but this has also included other medical professionals, teachers, engineers and accountants. PHASE Worldwide also has a lead role in a technical assistance project to improve prevention and treatment of cervical cancer in Nepal. PHASE Worldwide s fundraising also contributes to our mission of empowerment on all levels, as numerous fundraising events empower people in the UK by giving them opportunities to address personal challenges events have included the Yorkshire and National Three Peaks Challenges, London to Paris bike rides, etc. PHASE has a very active Board and the new Director will work with and receive support from a range of Trustees. 3
