56.0 Chem-Stud 56.1 Introduction The Chem-Stud Anchor System consists of sef contained two-part gass capsues and matching chise pointed anchor rod which is instaed using a rotary hammer dri and rod adapters. The Chem-Stud adhesive is a ester based resin materia packaged in singe use gass capsues designed for use in the instaation of 3/8" through 1-1/2" threaded rod in soid concrete and masonry materias. It can aso be used for reinforcing bars. During instaation, the Chem-Stud System bonds the threaded rod to the base materia so no expansion forces are exerted against the was of the hoe in the base materia. This makes it idea for use in anchoring to soid base materias ranging from soft common brick to hard marbe or granite. Unike expansion anchors, the anchor can be set cose to the edge of the base materia. 56.2 Product Description CHEM-STUD Capsue Chise-Pointed Rod Internay Threaded Insert 56.2.1 Chem-Stud Capsue The Chem-Stud adhesive is packaged in singe use gass capsues which have pre-measured components. A separate capsue is used for each size of 3/8" through 1-1/4" threaded anchor rod. An outer capsue contains epoxy acryate resin (viny ester) in which quartz aggregate is suspended. The inner capsue contains a benzo peroxide hardening agent. When the components are combined, they form an adhesive mortar which mechanicay bonds to the anchor rod to soid base materia. This type of system must be used with a chise pointed anchor rod which is spun into it using a rotary hammer dri. 56.2.2 Chem-Stud Chise Pointed Anchor Rod The Chem-Stud System is designed to be used with chise pointed anchor rods. The threaded anchor rods have a 45 chise point cut on one end to propery mix the components contained in the capsue during instaation. A 90 point is formed on the internay threaded inserts. The threaded rod or reinforcing bar used must have a chise point to mix the components contained in the capsue during instaation. 56.2.3 Chem-Stud Capsue Specifications The foowing tabe ists the shef ife and storage recommendations for the capsue. The properties isted appy to the cured Chem-Stud adhesive mortar. Shef Life 2 to 4 years Storage Conditions Store dry at 40 to 90 F. Condition to 60 F before use. Coor Mixed adhesive mortar- amber Consistency Paste mortar The mortar voume isted in the foowing tabe is for the mixed materia. The diameter and ength may be different than products offered by other manufacturer's capsues because of variations in air content. When comparing capsues, use the instaed mortar voume. Cat. Chem-Stud Recommended Setting Time The setting times the for the Chem-Stud adhesive mortar are isted beow. The setting time is the minimum time required for the mortar to reach its pubished physica properties and is isted for the base materia temperature, not ambient air temperature. For exampe, when making instaations inside a buiding in exterior was during the winter, the temperature of the hoe may be different than the interior temperature and shoud be measured to determine the setting time required. In order to insure proper mixing, the capsue contents shoud be conditioned to 60 F. prior to use. 56.3 Chem-Stud Adhesive Properties 56.3.1 Resistance Of Chem-Stud Adhesive to Chemicas The resistance of the cured Chem-Stud adhesive to various chemicas was determined according to ASTM Specification C-581 by aying moded sampes of the resin in the respective chemica agents. The sampes were subjected to a bending strength test before and after a 12 month exposure to the chemicas. The adhesive was rated as resistant if there was no visibe deterioration and ess than 25% reduction in bending strength. This exposure is extreme. Under norma instaation conditions, the adhesive is exposed to the chemica agents ony at the surface of the concrete around the top of the anchor hoe. The toerances of the dri bit used shoud meet the requirements of ANSI B212.15. Bow the hoe cean with compressed air, brush the hoe, and bow it cean again. Hoes may be dry or damp, but shoud be free of standing water or frost. Insert the capsue into the hoe. Either end of the capsue may be inserted first. Thread the nut onto the anchor rod eaving 3 to 4 threads exposed. Then thread the rod couper onto the threaded rod unti it is tight against the nut. If using reinforcing, insert the bar into the proper size couper. The threaded rod or reinforcing bar used shoud be free of dirt, grease, oi, or other foreign materia. Seect the drive unit, insert it into a rotary hammer dri and engage the couping to be used. Insert the chise point of the rod or rebar into the hoe to break the gass capsue. Spin it into the capsue at a speed of 250 to 500 RPM unti it is fuy embedded. Once the rod or bar is fuy embedded, turn the rotary hammer dri off immediatey. If instaing threaded rod, pu the driver out of the couping whie hoding the rod. Hod the hex nut with a wrench to unthread the couper. If using reinforcing bar, reease the set ever and side the couper off the bar. Aow the adhesive to cure for the specified time prior to appying any oad. Do not disturb or oad the anchor unti it is fuy cured. 193

56.7 Performance Data 56.7.1 Chem-Stud Utimate Load Capacities for Instaations Using Threaded Rod in Concrete The foowing capacities are the utimate or faiure oad for the Chem-Stud adhesive when tested with high strength anchor rod in three compressive strengths of concrete. The capacity of the anchor rod shoud be taken into account in the design of any anchorage. The aowabe oad capacities for the Chem-Stud adhesive and five types of anchor rod are described in the next section. The combination of capsues shown are required to insure that the proper bond area is achieved for each of the embedments isted. Do not attempt to use more than two capsues as the dri equipment used for instaation may not have enough torque to propery spin the rod into the capsue. For instaations where the combined ength of capsues exceeds the ength of the anchor hoe, crush the first capsue using the anchor rod, then insert the second capsue. The arger capsue shoud be inserted into the anchor hoe first. Anchor Dri Embed. Number And Size 2,000 psi Concrete 4,000 psi Concrete 6,000 psi Concrete Size Dia. 56.8 Chem-Stud Specia Appications 56.8.1 Instaation Of Anchors Under Water Chem-Stud Anchor capsues can be used to insta threaded anchor rod or reinforcing bars in submerged appications under water provided some instaation and design criteria are foowed. The anchor hoes shoud be prepared foowing the standard instructions with the foowing exceptions. Specia care shoud be taken to cean the anchor hoe as a surry of concrete paste tends to form on the was of the anchor hoe when driing under water. Insert the proper size capsue into the anchor hoe. Be sure the capsue is fuy inserted to the bottom of the hoe. Foow the standard instaation instructions for spinning the anchor rod used into the capsue with an appropriate too for submerged use. The setting time of the Chem-Stud adhesive in submerged appications depends upon the base materia temperature as shown in Section 56.2.3. Laboratory tests and fied experience have shown that a decrease of 15 to 20% in the utimate tension oad capacity can be expected for an adhesive anchor which is instaed under water. The design professiona shoud incude this reduction in his cacuations. If the tension capacities are critica, a job site test is recommended. 56.9 Suggested Specification The adhesive used sha be a two part capsue type system containing an epoxy acryate resin. The outer capsue sha contain the resin in which quartz aggregate sha be suspended and the inner capsue sha contain a dibenzoy peroxide hardener. The capsue used sha have a minimum shef ife of two years. Anchor hoes sha be dried with a bit meeting the requirements of ANSI Standard B212.15 and sha be approved by the manufacturer. The adhesive capsue and anchor hardware components sha be instaed according to the manufacturers instructions. Anchor rods (or inserts) sha be manufactured from stee and sha have a chise point to propery mix the capsue. Chem- Stud capsues and the hardware used (except for reinforcing bar) sha be suppied by Powers Fastening, Inc. 56.10 Approvas and Listings The foowing approvas and istings are four reference purposes. They shoud be reviewed by the design professiona responsibe for the product instaation to verify approved base materias, sizes, and compiance with oca codes. ICBO ES Research Report No. 4514 City Of Los Angees Research Report No. 24960 56.8.2 Instaation Of Anchors Overhead Prior to instaing adhesive anchors overhead or in was, consut with the governing buiding authority to determine the requirements for fire safety guideines. The effect of eevated temperature on the Chem-Stud adhesive is shown in Section 56.3.2. Chem-Stud capsues can be used for the instaation of threaded anchor rod overhead. The anchor hoes shoud be prepared foowing the standard instructions with the foowing exceptions. After the anchor hoe is dried and ceaned, insert the proper size capsue into the hoe. For the 3/8" to 1" sizes, seect the proper size anchor sea pug and insert it into the hoe unti the rim of the pug is fuy seated against the base materia. Be sure the hoe is deep enough to accept both the capsue and the pug. Foowing the standard instaation instructions, insert the chise-pointed anchor rod through the cross cut opening of the anchor sea pug and spin the rod into the capsue. An aternate method is to use a piece of duct tape or simiar materia to hod the capsue in pace prior to spinning the anchor rod into the hoe. If duct tape is used, it is necessary to hod the chise-pointed anchor rod in pace unti the adhesive ges. 199
